The Parents were doctors, he heard many stories of the lives that they had saved. Sam looked up to them, his heroes, however, his father would end up developing cancer. With all the stories he has heard of how amazing doctors can be, he was disenchanted by the inability of the other doctors to help his father. After his father died he used that sense of disenchantment and applied it to his entire life.
