Rick Grimes is the former protagonist first encountered in Issue 1 of Image Comics' The Walking Dead. He is a former police deputy from Cynthiana, Kentucky, who was shot in the line of duty and fell into a coma, only to awaken and find himself in the midst of the apocalypse. He searches for his wife, and son, and encounters many survivors along the way. He gradually becomes the leader of the group and is often faced with many leadership struggles, overcoming them and changing his mindset to prioritize safety in numbers.

Right from the start Rick is established as a strong-willed, brave, intelligent, and resourceful individual willing to go to any length to protect his family. Although somewhat naive at first, Rick is quick to adapt to the apocalypse and typically approaches situations with a well thought out plan. All of these traits make him a natural leader, although Rick believes that there is another, more important trait that puts him in that position, this being his outlook on the future. While most survivors are focused on day-to-day survival, Rick thought one step ahead very early on and, thus, also focused on securing the future for him and his group. What this future was changed throughout the series, but the desire to rebuild never truly died in Rick.

Time Commitment: 2 Years, 8 Months (32 Volumes)

This is the absolute biggest role. Rick goes through all sorts of transformations character wise and has great emotional depth, so this'll be an acting challenge for sure.

He COULD have a voice of medium pitch and COULD have a southern accent, but don't let these limit your vocal choices at all.

  • "But I'm going to be watching you Dwight... with both fucking eyes. So before you bring this shit up to me again, in whatever style you choose, reasonable or otherwise... you keep one thing in mind. I have a rage boiling inside me. At times like this it's really hard to control and it wants out. Don't give me a reason to let it out, Dwight. Because at this point, what's one more fucking grave?"

    —Rick threatening Dwight.

  • "I did everything wrong. Everything. I made all the wrong decisions, I should have known better--We should have left--We should have just left. I was stupid... I was-- I'm sorry, Lori. I love-- I miss you so much. I don't know what to say... I don't... Is this real?"

-Rick, through tears, talking to his dead wife on the phone due to a hallucination.

  • "This world has scarred us, mentally and physically. We carry those scars with us--each and every day. They serve as a reminder of what we've lived through--what others have done to us to survive... sacrifices made... all to get us here. To this point. To have so many of us here. To be safe. To be so close to the way things were before. I used to think we had to put our humanity on hold... embrace a savageness in order to survive... because our world, the one we knew, was never coming back. I was wrong. We are on the road back, I can see our future ahead of us, and it is bright. We no longer live surrounded by the dead. We're not among them--not living on borrowed time... We do not live minute to minute, in minutes stolen from us by the dead. We can be happy... we can be content... we can have peace. We can live again. WE ARE NOT THE WALKING DEAD! At least we don't have to be. Not anymore. I think of this world as a gift... even after all the pain it's caused me. It's a chance to rebuild things... better than they were before. We haven't worked as hard as we have just to bring back old, flawed, unfair systems. We deserve a better world. A world we will appreciate... because of what we've just lived through. We should have an elevated sense of respect for each other... because we know what we've all lived through. But that's not the case, is it? We don't seem to have that respect for each other. And you're clinging to old ways... where the few live a position of power over the many. Why? Governor Milton... I was wrong to support you. I was trying to keep the peace... hoping you would see the error of your ways eventually... that change could come from within. Now I see you for what you truly are... someone who craves power above all else. You would lead your people... into killing each other... just to maintain that power? I ask you, people of the Commonwealth... is this the kind of leader you want? That you deserve? (...) Then let your voice be heard! Take charge of your lives... bring about a Commonwealth that works for you... rather than against you. If you don't want Pamela Milton to lead you--then don't let her lead you!"

—Rick's passionate last inspirational speech to the citizens of the Commonwealth.

Sidenote, I'd really love to audition for Negan as well if you don't have a VA for him already.
