Wuthering Heights - an Old Time Radio Revival
karlawson for Heathcliff
Heathcliff, the protagonist of our story, is often listed as a Byronic hero. As a young boy, Heathcliff was adopted by Cathy and Hindley's father, Earnshaw. He starts off as a wild child who distrusts everyone. Cathy doesn't enjoy his company at first, but soon acknowledges him as a brother and then a friend. Heathcliff falls in love with Cathy even as a child, wanting nothing more than to please her and be happy with her. Upon Earnshaw's death, Hindley takes over the responsibilities of Wuthering Heights and used Heathcliff as a servant. Rather than leave Wuthering Heights and Cathy forever, Heathcliff acquiesces to Hindley's demands. As he grows into a young man, Heathcliff's love for Catherine grows, but he is dismayed to learn she is spending her time with a wealthy young suitor, Edgar Linton.
(angry but comes out of love) That's right, that's right, the dirty stable boy can't come near you lest he soil your dress. But who soils your heart? Who turns you into a cheap, vain, ambitious fool?! Linton does. You let yourself be loved by him because you want to be a fine lady, because it pleases your stupid, greedy vanity!
(sympathetic) You came because you're lonely. And because the house you live in is too happily-wedded for an outsider. And because it's no joy to ride the moors alone. Is that right?
