Gus is Hanji’s closest friend and the new second in command once Hanji becomes captain of the guard. He’s friendly and playful, but really clumsy. He always tries to do what’s right and encourages Hanji to take more risks. He’s secretly courting Sheik, a rouge. He grew up on a farm, and doesn’t have much of an education (he’s illiterate). He’s 19.

  • (Laughs) You’d think you’d be used to the early mornings by now!

  • (Sheepishly) Uh, Sheik sent me another letter. You mind reading it for me, Han?

  • (Gently) Have you talked to Phillip? About you two being, you know, together?
