Levi was born in the slums of Mitras to a young prostitute. They were very poor and their living conditions were awful. His mother raised him as well as she could and tried to keep him out of crime, but eventually Levi started burglarizing the wealthy in Sina and pawning off his finds. He eventually makes friends with fellow Meta and child thugs, Farlan Church and Isabel Magnolia. They continue doing the thug thing into their early twenties. From there, they catch the eye of Erwin and the Legion. He promises safety for their families if they join. Levi agrees to protect his mother, and the others agree as well. During training, Farlan and Isabel realize the Legion isn't for them and opt to leave training.

However, Levi still keeps in touch with them as they are now informants. Levi has seen several of his friends die on the streets and is terrified of losing the ones he still has. Seeing disease kill people has also made him deathly afraid of filth and wants everything clean so no one will get sick and die.

Despite his serious attitude, he really loves nicknames. But not cute ones. He’ll use weird but ambiguously affectionate nicknames with people. Ex. Brat with Isabel, Shitty Glasses with Hanji, using bits of Carla’s title when referring to her.

  • Listen punks, this mission is crucial. We need to act fast and with caution.

  • I know what's at stake. Believe me, I've seen more friends than I'd like to suffer and die.

  • You're just as much a part of the Legion as we are, but there are times and places when you should stand back and let the more experienced members handle things.
