The readers are an accomplished but feared members of the whale rider society. Their ability to read into things unseen makes them isolated, as few can understand them, fewer still makes the effort. The reader is cut meaning his manhood is taken, but his talents as a reader saved him from death. He is grateful and glad for his job.
