DeathBringer (Art by Mike Holmes)

Deathbringer is charming and optimistic, seems not to share the grumpiness of the other NightWings in his tribe. He is adaptable and quick to make decisions, as shown when he chose to make an attempt on Blaze to make up for his mental inability to kill Glory. Deathbringer has an extremely large ego, calling himself the greatest assassin in Pyrrhia, and can be sarcastic and witty. He takes his job seriously despite his confidence. He was previously very devoted to his work, but is now willing to bend rules, as he promised himself that whomever he loves comes before his mission.

  • “You want me to spy on the queen?” Deathbringer tilted his head at Quickstrike, the dragon who had taught him everything he knew. “ Our queen?”

  • "Please say yes," Deathbringer prayed. "Please please please say yes."

  • "Not like a coward. Like an assassin. Stealth is the whole point. This is what I’ve been training for."

Quickstrike seemed to be a quick-thinking dragon. She loved and worried about Deathbringer very much, although she was careful to treat her son primarily as an apprentice. She was patient and dedicated to her missions, as she waited in dangerous territory for Commander Tempest's arrival for a short span of time. Quickstrike was secretive, mysterious, and protective of her tribe, as she was careful to keep her identity and the secrets of the NightWings hidden. She also was very skilled and an adequate teacher.

  • “If she’s there,” Quickstrike answered. “I’ll be meeting with Greatness in an hour in the council chamber, and I want you to sneak in and listen, if you can.”

  • “Be as stealthy as you can,” Quickstrike said before turning away. “And meet me afterward at your sleeping cave.”

  • “You don’t have to be here,” a female voice snapped. That one was easy; Deathbringer had been listening to Quickstrike’s voice every day since he’d hatched, after all. “Greatness, this is a matter for you, me, and the queen. Nobody else.”

Greatness (Art by Wings of Fire Fandom)

Greatness, despite being a princess (and only heir), is not interested in becoming queen of the NightWings, and occasionally expresses it defiantly. Battlewinner describes her as weak and unambitious. She accepts who she is and puts her own needs before her tribe, like when she ran out of the NightWing tunnel to the rainforest without checking to be sure her dragons were safe. When Starflight first saw her, he was certain she wasn't the queen, as he noticed that as she sat down her wings slumped in a tired manner and she didn't emit a queenly aura.

  • "The queen has a proposal, [...] The dragonet must prove himself to be as good as you claim, Quickstrike. If he can kill either Vengeance or Slaughter tonight, instealth, before the sun rises, then he can go with you. If not, then you must choose one or both of them instead."

  • “Wait,” Greatness said. “Let me stand by the Queen’s Eye, in case Mother has anything to say.” The sound of her wings flapping filled the cave, and Deathbringer pictured her flying up to perch beside the screen. “All right,” she called. “Go ahead.”

  • “It does go against all our rules,” Greatness said apologetically. “He’s just too young, Quickstrike. You know we never let dragonets leave the kingdom until they’re ten years old. Isn’t he only four?”

Morrowseer (Art by Mike Holmes)

Morrowseer was seen as manipulative and did not seem to care about how many dragons died for his cause. He only cared about his tribe and reputation, considering himself and the NightWings as superior to others. He was shown to be narcissistic, snobbish, and heartless, and would have killed every other tribe in Pyrrhia in order to protect the NightWings. He was also deceitful, lying to thousands of dragons about the Dragonet Prophecy without any remorse. He was very intelligent and cunning, although very loyal to his tribe. He was also more than just an advisor to Queen Battlewinner, considering his oversight of the kidnapping of Starflight, the murder of several IceWing prisoners, and the murder of several SkyWing soldiers.

  • “There had better be a point to all this,” growled a deep male voice. Deathbringer wasn’t sure who that was.

  • “He’s killed one MudWing prisoner,” Morrowseer said. “That’s hardly a prediction of future murderous greatness. Leave him with me and I’ll make sure —”

  • “That’s right,” Morrowseer said smugly. “So what are you trying to get away with now, Quickstrike?”

Slaughter is too thin, like most NightWings, and has a twitchy, furious look, even in his sleep. He has black wings.[1]

  • “What’s happening?” Slaughter whispered as the two dragons began to pad out of the cave.

  • “Wow,” Slaughter said, sounding a little more awake. “Great. I’ve been asking for someone to kill for ages .”

  • “How should I know?” Slaughter grumbled. “Sleeping? Like anyone would be?”

Like her sister Burn, Blister appeared to have no mercy on anyone she considered an enemy, or even those who knew too much, as displayed when she killed the SkyWing guardian, Kestrel. Unlike her sister Burn, she regarded killing as a necessary task to gain the throne, rather than a pleasurable pastime. She was described as the smartest and most cunning of the three SandWing sisters, and proved to be very intelligent throughout the series. She was one of the smartest dragons in Pyrrhia. Blister was a master trickster, having at one point convinced each one of her soldiers that he or she was an elite spy on Blister's orders. She also seemed to think very highly of herself as she addressed Coral informally as "Coral" as though she were an equal.

  • “I know.” The SandWing lashed her tail. “It would be helpful if they would listen to me a little bit more.”

  • “Yes,” hissed the SandWing. “It may have escaped your notice, but that is the point of all this.”

  • “No,” said the SandWing coldly.

She is seen as very brave and calm, and even when Deathbringer threw a spear into her chest, she didn't scream or cry out. She only responded by saying, "Well, son of a starfish", before the severity of the wound killed her. Tempest seemed to have a close relationship with Gill and her third-in-command, Piranha.

  • "Blister! We're here! Let's get this over with!"

  • "Ha, [...] The queen has her own kingdom to run. She won't ever have to meet with you as long as I'm here to handle our strategy summits. But she did send her husband, Gill."

  • "Would be fine by me, [...] I mean, I love being the war commander and all, but it's a messy business, aren't I right? Ha!"

King Gill (Art by Wings of Fire Fandom)

Little is known about Gill's personality, although Coral remembered him as 'being the perfect king', describing him to be smart, strong, persuasive, gentle, and of a noble family. However, she did think of Whirlpool as a perfect future king, too, which may mean this description is inaccurate. In Assassin, he is shown to be a good king, wanting to compromise rather than fight to end the War of SandWing Succession. He was said to have a way with words, such as when he was able to convince prisoners to stop fighting in Scarlet's arena. Gill was said to have adored Coral's writing.[6]

  • Queen Coral sends her respects,” said Gill, bowing, although not very deeply. “She has sent me to open a conversation with you about possible peace negotiations.”

  • Yes. We’re starting to wonder if this war is really worth it for anyone involved,” Gill said. “Perhaps there’s a way to reach a diplomatic accord. Maybe by dividing the Kingdom of Sand among the three of you, for instance.”

  • “I wager I could talk them into it,” Gill said, smiling again.

She has a sharp and fierce personality. Piranha is also quick to jump to conclusions, blaming the MudWings for killing Tempest.

  • "Did you have to get our commander killed to stop us from getting it?"

  • "We don't want your stupid land! But we're certainly going to take it now!"
