Wings of Fire Analysis - The Dark Side of Kinkajou
Project Overview
Hello Everyone!
This video will be the next installment of a series in which major themes, characters, and moments in the Wings of Fire books are analyzed as part of a Youtube channel focused on breaking down the series and explaining what makes it so great. To date, the channel has received over 500,000 views and accrued 7,800 subscribers (trust me on this one - these subscribers are the best on the internet). For those interested, the channel can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_P4q1DveTnxG8YB7qjsUGQ.
This video in particular is an analysis of the actions of one of the primary characters of the second arc (Kinkajou) taken during the climax of the tenth book. To make things a little more fun, the video will be framed as a court-case in which the character under scrutiny - Kinkajou - is on trial for the murder of the main villain. We will be using fully-voice acted quotes from the characters to establish the arguments that the analysis puts forward.
Please consider the following:
- All communication for this project will be done through discord, so having an account is a must. Please include your discord handle in your audition.
- Feel free to include up to 3 takes of each line if you feel that different reads/voices would improve your audition.
- Suggested interpretations are marked in *asterisks*, while lines to be read are marked in "quotations".
- Though this is not a requirement, I would love to cast voice actors who will stick around for future videos. As I continue to make videos, having recurring voices would really improve the quality of the productions.
- If you'd like constructive feedback, please let me know!
Finally, have fun with the voices! We are looking to work with people who enjoy what they're doing. Good luck out there!

First, I just wanted to say it was awesome to listen through all of these auditions! There are some seriously talented voice actors in here. Second, congratulations to everyone who was cast - I have reached out over CCC and discord. Finally, if you weren't cast, keep an eye out for future projects - I would love to hear each and every single one of your voices again :)
Ruby is the daughter of the queen and next in line for the throne. Knowing that Ruby may challenge her for Queenship, the current queen uses magic to transform Ruby's personality into that of someone who would never dare to challenge for the throne. As the book progresses, she has to grapple with her identity: which personality is the real her? Regardless of which personality is in control, Ruby is a wise and caring person. She can be intense when she needs to be and has a generally "queenly" demeanor.
*In a serious conversation, telling her sister to take less risks*
"I don't want to watch you die."
*In a mocking imitation of her mother's voice*
"I have thrillingly murdered one daughter! Why stop there? Who needs daughters anyway, right?"
"I am Ruby. I remember everything about being her. All I need to do is to look like her again."
*Another character then asks her if she wants to be her true self, to which she responds:*
"I will be myself. Ruby is the Skywing queen and Cliff's mother."
Peril is best described as intense and a little confrontational. If you'd like to be adventurous with the role, Peril has a rare condition in which her body is constantly super-heated, causing things to burn at her touch. I would love to hear vocal interpretations of this (perhaps as a raspy voice or something else of your own imagination)!
*Skeptical, suspicious*
"This isn't a trick, right? I'll still be myself?"
"She really is Ruby to them. And if she has all her memories, isn't she really Ruby? What else makes a dragon who she is?"
"But don't you want to be yourself? The real true actual Tourmaline?"
(pronounced "tore-muh-leen")
Turtle once dreamt of being a hero. Then, when he failed his father during a life-or-death situation, he changed his mind, repressing all thoughts of saving the day for good. For the most part, he tries to stay unnoticed, lest anyone ask him to do something he might fail at again. As the series progresses however, he learns that what his father needed from him was actually impossible to have accomplished due to previously unrecognized circumstances. He slowly becomes more confident in himself and learns to step up to the challenges he's faced with, even if he knows he might fail.
*Half-joking response to a question*
"Moral fiber? A coherent philosophy of life?"
"Why did I ever let anyone notice me? I'd be safe if I'd stayed boring and forgettable!"
"It's not too late for your soul. You're here now, with us. You're on the right side, doing the right thing. You're not evil."
Chameleon is a sly, greedy, and self-absorbed character. A voice for him would do well to convey his oily personality.
*Attempting to persuade someone into changing form like he does*
"Of course. Just like I am always myself, but each of my faces is a better version of me."
*Lying*
"This particular necklace is only enchanted to take away your firescales. You'll still be you, the same Peril, with all your own personality and history."
"But it's mine. I found it, I get to keep it. Why should you have it? What makes you all any better than me?"
