Hi! This is the producer for SYNTXE, an audio drama anthology podcast.
‘I Danced With the Devil , so He Made Me One’ is SYNTXE's fifth (September) episode in our anthology.
A young boy named Valerian gets invited by his friend Marjory to go see a circus who just arrived in town. Soon after the show begins, Valerian notices something… off. Perhaps something a little dangerously threatening for both himself and his town.
The story takes place in the late 1880s. The story rotates back and forth between present Valerian (1920s) narrating parts and young Valerian in the past (1898) when the incident occurred.

I’m fairly flexible with deadlines, but generally I’d like to have lines by two weeks of casting (the quicker, the better!). If you don’t think you can meet this deadline, please don’t audition. Recording will be done remotely and asynchronously.
REQUIREMENTS
Must be 13+ to audition
Please be sure your recording doesn’t have any background noise. Good quality mic is recommended.
Must have discord to communicate (or be willing to create an account)
Please include your discord usernamein your audition.
When auditioning, please READ ALL THREE LINES. I’d encourage you to record two versions of each line (AABBCC format) to see your range/various interpretations.
Feel free to audition for multiple roles (I’d highly encourage so!) since most of the roles only have a few lines.

Male, 40s, lead
This is present Valerian. He has a calm, wise, knowledgable, slow voice throughout. He’s reflecting upon his past throughout the whole story.

(narrating) She took my hand and led me through the busy street of our town, people glaring us down as we ran, some with judgment, but some with the yearning of that young innocence only children obtain. A young innocence I no longer possessed after this day.
(narrating) On the crooked stage, the 5 figures walked, dressed in black, their face cloaked with an expressionless mask. By all means, they weren’t scary, but something about the way they just stood there, swaying, waiting, like an encore waiting to be sung, made me want to run away. (beat) I should have. But I didn’t.
(narrating) The strange thing that comforted me was that I am not alone in my misery. Not alone with that burden. somewhere in the world, there’s a circus with a strange and terrible secret, passing it along. And in some ironic, twisted turn of phrase, I am now, just like them.

He is the young/past version of Valerian about thirty years ago. He’s very curious, brave, and caring especially to her mother and friend Marjory. He will do whatever it takes to protect them.

Young Valerian’s friend. Happy, enthusiastic, innocent girl. She’s the one who initially introduces Valerian to the circus.

That’s the thing: nobody really knows. They kinda just showed up here this morning,all mysterious. Some people say they’re famous. That they travel the world.
(reassuring) Val, they’re just doing a show. There’s no such thing as witches, remember?
The circus’ voice. Sort of hypnotic, taunting, and distorted. Seeking more of a deeper, creepier voice. Only has three one word lines, so please feel free to interpret the words however you see fit.

Valerian’s mother. In the story, she is old and very weak. She speaks very slowly and her voice is a little raspy, barely having the strength to move or speak. Motherly voice. Her son has to get medicine for her since she cannot walk anymore.
