To The Moon [Steam Version]

To The Moon [Steam Version]

Project Overview

Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts have peculiar jobs: They give people another chance to live, all the way from the very beginning... but only in their patients' heads.

Due to the severity of the operation, the new life becomes the last thing the patients remember before drawing their last breath. Thus, the operation is only done to people on their deathbeds, to fulfill what they wish they had done with their lives, but didn’t.

This particular story follows their attempt to fulfill the dream of an elderly man, Johnny. With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny's past is revealed. As the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned a life time, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is.

And Johnny's last wish is, of course... to go to the moon.

Lilian "Lily" Quinn is a non-playable character in To the Moon. She is Johhny's caretaker. She recieved Johnny's house after he passed away.

  • Dr. Watts and Dr. Rosalene, I presume? Thanks for coming on such a short notice. [Eva asks if she is the Johnny's daughter] Oh no, I am just his caretaker. [Tommy and Sarah runs past them] . . . And these are my children, Sarah and Tommy. It's not exactly a nine-to-five job, so Johnny lets us live here.

  • That. . . I don't really know much. Johnny's an odd man. Through the two years that I've worked here, he rarely spoke. He worked as a craftsman for most of his life, and his wife passed away two years ago. . . I don't really know many details.

  • Well . . . I suppose if you look around the house, you may find some more info. I suppose Johnny wouldn't mind, since he signed for you two.

Johnathan "Johnny" Wyles is the main character of To the Moon and River's husband. By the events of the game, he is an elderly man who has enlisted the services of Neil and Eva of Sigmund Corp. to fulfil his final wish to go to the moon, although he doesn't know why.

Desired Voice Range for him (as the story progresses);

Low to high (child like high)

  • [in his late adulthood] Yep! The construction's starting in just a few months. It's a bit of a squeeze; we had to split the payment. But with financing, we'll make do.

  • [Young Johnny to Young River] You were in there this whole time?? I waited for you at the lobby, I thought you didn't come! Huh? I'm the one who should ask that! We weren't watching it together . . . I didn't even know where you were! If you saw me in there, why didn't you come and find me? Hahahah! You're so weird. . . Of course I do! Come, let's head back in before it ends!

  • [upon meeting Young River in the school] Then why didn't you--. . . nevermind. Um, that's a cool platypus you got there.

River Elisabeth Wyles is a main character in To the Moon. She is Johnny's wife and she has Asperger's Syndrome, a disability on the autism spectrum. She first met Johnny at a carnival when they were children, where they agreed they would meet on the moon if they ever lost each other. This is the reason that Johnny's dying wish is to go to the moon.

River passed away before the main events of the game begin. She was diagnosed with a late-stage terminal illness and refused treatment because the cost would prevent Johnny from finishing the house they were building that overlooked the lighthouse, Anya. As a child, she thought stars were lighthouses, spread out across the sky. River believed they lived a lonely existence, far from the other stars, so she wanted to "befriend" one in her lifetime so that it wouldn't be lonely. (This could also stand as a metaphor for River, although it has not been yet proven.)

River has a very strong attachment throughout her life to a stuffed platypus that was given to her by Johnny during the carnival. After Johnny confesses that he first started dating her because Johnny wanted "someone different", River realizes that he lost his memory of their first encounter at the carnival and begins to make various origami rabbits in an attempt to remind him of the night they met. (Note that this making of paper rabbits is also a way to release anxiety, and is seen as a "symptom" of Asperger's. Another common trait River experiences is a difficulty in expressing or articulating one's thoughts and emotions by "normal" means, such as direct conversation, making it somewhat tough for River to remind John of their first encounter. After asking Johnny if he ever created shapes from the stars, they used the moon and stars in the sky to create a constellation resembling a rabbit. She even creates one with blue paper for the head and feet and yellow for the torso, as it resembles the yellow moon that makes up the belly of the rabbit constellation (additionally, her wedding dress was blue and yellow). This was her best attempt in order to reconnect Johnny's memories for him.

  • [late adulthood, her illness has gotten worse, thus these following lines are the last accessible memory of hers]. . . White lie. That's what you call it, right? Stop it. . . I don't like it when you lie. I calculated our finances; I know how it's like. Why do you try to convince me against my will? What you do with our money is up to you, but if you would grant my wish, I want you to use it to finish building that house. . . and then, for every day that you live there, I want you to watch over her. Visit her. Speak to her. Comfort her. . . I don't want her to be alone anymore.

  • [Young RIver to Young Johnny] . . . Why did you leave? I thought we were watching the movie together. What do you mean? We were watching the movie together, and then you left. What difference does it make . . . ? We were watching the same movie in the same room. What's wrong? . . . Do you not want to watch the movie together anymore?

  • [Young River to Young Johnny, back when they first met in highschool (i think?)] There are exactly sixteen second-order Fresnel lens lighthouses in the country left. Nine of them are coastal, and one of them was modified from a historic kerosene lamp lighthouse.

Sarah Mary Quinn is a non-playable character in To the Moon. She is the daughter of Lily, and sister of Tommy.

Like her brother, Sarah has brown hair and blue eyes. She wears her hair in high pigtails, and dons a yellow dress.

She and her brother both have a fondness for playing the piano, which she is exceptionally talented in. She shares the talent of playing the piano with her brother.

She is playful and loves candy, particularly candy canes. Due to her age, she is also innocent and naive.

She and her brother bribes Neil Watts into getting her mom's big candy cane, a feat they can't do mainly because of their height, in exchange of showing Neil "the funny room". If you refused to get the candy cane for them and claimed that they will go to jail for six years, they will foolishly believe you and show you the room without you needing to get the candy cane.

  • No fair! You pushed me! Whatever, you get the boring two notes anyway.

  • Tommy used to throw books at me and call it a book fight. Until one day, I threw one back and he needed a bandaid. Heehee!

  • Once we were down here and the lights were out, and Tommy fell down those stairs. He chipped a tooth, but that's ok because he's ugly to begin with.

(In picture you can see young Joey so the lines above (or below) is from his childhood)

  • Alright, ma. Tell her thanks for coming. [Young Nicholas asks young Joe about his nickname) Oh, that's my grandpa's name. He passed away before I was born. Ma calls me by it as my nickname.

  • Dude you should totally give this series a try! I mean really, it's just wicked awesome! I've already plowed through three books straight!

  • Animorphs. It's about this group of kids turning into animals to fight mind controlling slugs! [Johnny says he don't like that weird alien stuff] Why not? it's great! Instead of going to boring school, they get to turn into tigers and maul big bad aliens! They're all like 'rawr rawr! RAWR RAWR RAWR'!!! . . .And then they pick up lasers! And it's all 'pew pew! • [on his late adulthood] Look at us, John. We aren't exactly at the ripe age of piano moving. You know what, if this means that much to you, I'll pay for the professionals to do this. . . I can't help saving that house for you, so this is the least I can do.

  • Well, I'm certainly not one to inquire, but I'll tell you this: I've known you since middle school, and you're notorious for overthinking. You're probably just imagining things. There's no need to get too worked up.

  • [to Johnny] You had your wedding at that lighthouse near there all those years ago, didn't you?

[John: "That's not all that's special about it. We have a long history with that place."]

Well, it's good to have some good news at a get-together for once! Cheers and congratulations, ya two!

Dr. Eva Rosalene is one of the two main protagonists of To The Moon. She is an employee of Sigmund Corporation and partner of Dr. Neil Watts. Her official title at the company is Senior Memory Traversal Agent.

She is more serious than Dr.Neil, and is kinder and more sensitive.

She will not stop at anything to complete her task, even if it means taking huge actions and risks to make sure that her job is done right.

The holiday specials reveal a side of her that wonders if she and her employees are doing the right thing, given that so many people are anti-Sigmund Corp. She also remarks how their job never gets easier.

She has a liking for vegetables, using them in place of swears. In the 2nd holiday episode, her diary entry reveals she misses her garden.

  • Cucumbers. . . We don't have time for this fluff. Let's try pushing it out of the way.

  • Nevertheless, Johnny, here's what we will do. . . we need to get to your childhood, but it is too distant to do so in one memory hop. Thus, we will need to traverse through your memories with gradual backward leaps. Once we lay down the waypoints in your childhood memories for direct access, we will return here. That's when you'll need to help us influence the childhood you to become an astronaut.

  • Look, don't worry, we've already gotten the teenage years saved. We might still be able to do this. . . . As long as we succeed, he doesn't have to know. Well, I guess this is it. . . there's nothing we can do here. Ready to finalize before activation?

Isabelle

Isabelle is a character in To The Moon. She, with River, has Asperger's Syndrome; however, she was diagnosed early in her life, and also learned how to act "normal" to deal with the world around her. During the game, Isabelle defines 'normal' as 'Neurotypical', a popular term used in real life by Autistic People overall, 'Aspies' or otherwise. Neurotypical is a term often used by people with neurological disabilities, like Autism and Down Syndrome, to define people who do not have any neurological disabilities at all, and, therefore, don't understand the lives, needs, and etc. of the neurologically disabled as the neurologically disabled themselves do.

Isabelle is the one that doesn't show her face on the profile picture.

  • Everyone with it is different, John. Just because she and I share the syndrome, doesn't mean we share the same head.

[John: "But you must be able to help somehow. . . everything was okay at first, but now, she's even more aloof than before. Even when we're in the same room, she's never really . . . there. It's starting to take a toll on me. I just don't know how to take it anymore."]

Well, I can't speak for her, but many of us do long for connections. . . though, being able to articulate it is a different story. Just because she struggles to express it, it doesn't mean she doesn't feel anything. She's still there, right?

  • For one, I was diagnosed when I was still young. With effort, it's not impossible to acquire a guise of social norms systematically. But you know what? I both envy and pity River. Me . . . I'm an actress, because I've been doing it all my life. Not only on-stage, but off-stage . . .and at practically every moment. I've gotten good at it, because acting is the only option I have. It's the only way for me to be 'normal'.

  • But River . . . She never did that. She remained an outcast and refused to learn to step against it. . . I don't know if it was by choice or by limit, whether bravery or cowardice. There are days when I just can't stand faking it anymore. And then, I realize that it's too late. The Isabelle that people know of is all an act, and the real me has long become a stranger.

Thomas "Tommy" Quinn is a non-playable character in To the Moon. He is the son of Lily Quinn, and the brother of Sarah.

Like his sister, Tommy has brown hair and blue eyes. He wears a yellow shirt under denim overalls.

Tommy and Sarah are both rather troublesome and cheeky, and they enjoy playing the piano at Johnny's house together. He is exceptionally talented in playing the piano for a boy his age. He shares this talent with his sister, Sarah.

He is playful and loves candy, particularly candy canes. Due to his age, he is also innocent and naive.

He and his sister bribes Neil Watts into getting his mom's big candy cane, a feat they can't do mainly because of their height, in exchange of showing Neil "the funny room". Also, as seen in the Sigmound Christmas episode 2, he's cheeky making lizard sounds at Neil. Also, his naivety is shown further when he says he wants to be like Dr Dre when he's older, inspired by Eva.

  • [When Lily, Eva and Neil has gone upstairs] Okay, they're gone! [They race towards the piano and Tommy wins, Sarah complains saying he pushed her] Did not! [Sarah says that he only gets to play the two boring notes anyway]

  • Just a bunch of books in here. They've nothing I don't know about, though!!

  • Turn on the light before you trip over somethin'.

Dr. Neil Watts is one of the two main playable protagonists of To The Moon, and is the primary playable character. He is an employee of Sigmund Corporation and partner of Dr. Eva Rosalene. His official title at the company is Technician Specialist.

He is humorous and light-hearted, in contrast to Dr. Rosalene's character, and often makes jokes and various pop-culture references throughout the course of the game. Although he is often perceived as silly and childish, Neil is also very smart, and can be serious when situations call for it. Despite a callous attitude towards Johnny and River's lives early on, insisting on finishing the job and getting paid, he later vehemently opposes Eva's efforts to eliminate River from Johnny's memories, insisting that Johnny will not be happy. Neil's stance at this point switches with Eva's, with Neil attempting leave River in to make him happy, even if it means they cannot send him to the moon, while Eva seems to be trying to fulfil his wish regardless of whether or not it makes Johnny happy.

  • [grumbling silently to Eva for having to carry a heavy equipment] . . . When my back breaks one day, I'll sue you with the insurance claim. [complaining to Eva] Hey, you're the one who said there was no time to waste. And incidentally, I'm the one who is carrying the weight of a small meteoroid.

  • Geez, I forgot to ask him about all these . . . rabbits. This is creeping me out. We probably should have checked his record for psychopathy first.

  • [on the top of the lighthouse] CRIKEY NUTCRACKERS!!!

    [Eva: "You aren't Australian."]

Who cares?! We're like 20 billion nanometers off the ground and standing on a damn flag pole!!

[Eva: "Just jump down; it's not like you can be hurt here."]

Are you kidding me? It's a fricken sky-dive!! You can't stay on here, you can't get off - God, I hate it when this happens! I swear, if this plac--- [Eva pushes him off the lighthouse's roof to the ground]
