The Shapers - Magic Story Audio Drama

The Shapers - Magic Story Audio Drama

Project Overview

As Wizards of the Coast continues to release their weekly Magic Story updates, it is our goal on the Voice of All podcast to bring these stories to life through audio.

The storyline of Ixalan has begun and we are at last introduced to our new players. This story features the merfolk of Ixalan, the River Heralds. It is their sacred duty to guard the golden city of Orazca from any who would abuse its power - even themselves. Foreign forces come ever closer to their borders, and tensions are rising among their leaders. You can check out this week's story here:

If you're interested in hearing our past works, you can listen to all of them here:

We can also be found on Soundcloud, Stitcher, YouTube, iTunes, and Google Play! We are looking to keep up with the release of Wizards' stories as best as possible and will release our version the second following Friday, so expect to be cast this week and have your lines to me within a few days.

As a general casting note, I do not typically have any voice requirements in mind for characters. I would much rather hear your interpretations and choose from among them.

Project Roles: Kopala Tishana Kumena

Role assigned to: danmulkerin

Kopala is the youngest of the Shapers, the leaders of the River Heralds. Each shaper represents a river within their territory and is chosen by their river. The river Kopala is languid and reflective, and he is much the same. Despite his inexperience, Kopala is wise beyond his years, able to calmly assess the arguments of his betters. He is proud of his peoples' heritage, bound to his duty, and quite compassionate, even for those from outside.

Kopala is, importantly, the primary narrator for this story. Should you accept this role, you will have that ahead of you, approximately seven pages in length after removing others' lines. He is also a major character in the Ixalan story and may be featured in future chapters. Should he return, you will be asked to reprise the role.

  • [opening narration]

We were here in the beginning.

Before the first patter of unwebbed feet upon the dirt, my people swam the waters of Ixalan and listened. The Nine Tributaries taught us their secret names, and in return we promised to call upon them only in need. We whispered to the roots as we stepped among them, and they curled away to clear our path—not because we were their masters, but because we alone knew how to ask. We spoke to the wind and the waves and the tangled branches. We shaped them to suit our needs, and they shaped us to suit theirs.

  • [weighing the arguments of his mentor Tishana and his fellow shaper Kumena] I cannot deny the truth in Kumena's words. If outsiders take the city, only misery can result. The Immortal Sun has brought ruin to this land once before, and we barely survived. For anyone to use it again would mean the end of everything we have built, and the failure of our vigil. And yet. If the Last Guardian had meant for us to wield it, he could have entrusted it directly to our care. The history of the Immortal Sun is the history of its misuse by mortals. I am not so arrogant as to think that we alone might safely bear the weight of this responsibility.

Role assigned to: galpaladins

Tishana, often called the Voice of Thunder, is the leader of the Shapers; the eldest, the wisest, and the most powerful. Her whispers can fell trees and she can conjure a storm with a flick of her hand. She mentors the other Shapers, guiding them in the ways of magic, meditation, and safeguarding Orazca. Though not said directly, it is suggested that she alone knows the true location of Orazca, keeping it secret from those whose greed would misuse it.

In addition to her lines, Tishana also narrates a small part of the story, approximately a page in length. As a major character in the Ixalan story, Tishana is likely to reappear in future chapters. Should she do so, you will be asked to reprise the role.

  • [calm and firm in the face of an angry argument] "And what would you have us do, Shaper Kumena? Please, grace us with your wisdom."

  • [narrating, talking about Kumena] I have fond memories of most of my students, but my memories of him are brimming with headaches and resentment. I would not go so far as to say I failed as a mentor, but rather that I succeeded only as much as one could have. Maturity cannot be taught; it must be developed.

  • [slight anger and contempt in her calm, firm tone] "I will not let you imperil more lives. I will not let you answer contingencies with contingencies and outrages with outrages."

Kumena is one of the strongest Shapers, brash, passionate, and full of himself. He is also cruel and hateful of outsiders. He appears to delight in causing them pain. He seeks Orazca to take the power of the Immortal Sun for himself, ostensibly to drive back invaders. But who knows how far his ambition will drive him?

As a major character in the Ixalan story, Kumena is likely to appear again in future chapters. Should he do so, you will be asked to reprise the role.

  • [speaking hatefully of the captured soldier he has brought] "I caught this on the west side of the Great River, with a company of his fellows and their beasts. And you know what they were looking for."

  • "The time has come. We must wield the power of the Immortal Sun ourselves, or we will see it fall into enemy hands. The sun will tumble from the sky, the waters will run cold, and this land that has cradled us will become our grave. Unless we act now, decisively. We have no choice!"

  • [trying to prove a point as he conjures a storm to smash an invading ship] "We can conjure a thousand storms a thousand times, or we can raise a city only once. Which is the better expenditure of our energy? Which is better stewardship, Tishana?"
