- Main
- Avila is a naive, excitable girl, but she very easily interprets any questioning as blame. Her family has taught her that she is fundamentally wrong for the things she wants to do, and that any time she receives attention, she's in trouble. She is about 10 years old.
"But I want to sail."
"Can I go with you?"
- Main
- After being beaten down for years, Avila has trouble properly interacting with others. She can't be vulnerable, and she snaps between good humor and sullenness to avoid talking about her (or anyone else's) feelings.
"Easy for the perfect child to say."
"Come on, let’s get some food! I’m starving!"
"There’s nothing I can do."
- Supporting
- Avila's older brother. The object of his parents' expectation, Leofric is quickly growing and excelling, and he is the stiff, proper son when around them. Still, he brings a hint of clever mischief and mirth to Avila's life. He is about 14 years old.
"Of course, mother."
"Mother can’t be mad at me if you run away when I’m not looking..."
- Supporting
- Over the years, carrying the weight of the family's expectations has turned from a source of growth to a source of exhaustion. Leofric is always tired, and even though he wants to help people, he has a tendency to lash out and snap in frustration. It especially doesn't help that he's usually the smartest in the room.
"There’s my baby sister."
"Is this what you want in life?"
"I’ll tell mother and father that you aren’t coming with me."
- Supporting
- Avila's mother. Ever since she had to stop her work as an alchemist to raise Leofric, she has projected all her aspirations in the field onto him and his sister. She showers Leofric with a kind of love and affection, but only because she loves his aptitude for alchemy and she thinks he can succeed. Avila, having shown neither aptitude for nor inclination towards alchemy, gets shunned and picked on by Amelia. Her overall attitude towards her children is "if you can't be what I want, you better not draw attention to yourself."
"You were supposed to watch her. That’s all I asked."
"Look who decided to join us."
"I thought you could be a role-model for your sister."
- Supporting
- An old and superstitious sailor. Has seen weird stuff, and is used to no one believing him. Doesn't stop him from trying.
"You shouldn’t laugh like that."
"Way back when I first joined the *Endeavor*..."
- Supporting
- A younger sailor. He's a bit of a skeptic, liking to poke some friendly fun at Adam for his tall tales. He's the quartermaster of the *Faithful*, the ship Avila ultimately joins up with.
"And then God himself descended and gave you the Holy Grail!"
"Don’t you have a mom or dad to run back to?"
"Forgot to come up with an ending this time?"
- Supporting
- A young woman who sails with the *Faithful*. She's kind, soft, and gentle; she's the person who is the quickest to get others to stop joking if she thinks someone's feelings might be hurt.
"She just needs to rest."
"Don’t be sorry. Just get some sleep."
- Supporting
- A young man who sails with the *Faithful*. He's a storyteller at heart, and usually cloaks all his thoughts and feelings in narrative guise. Nothing makes him happier than seeing his crewmates enthralled by a tale he's telling.
"It’s late. Can we get some dark?"
"One day, a man named Nicholas drank some rum in the morning. He fell during his work and died. The end."
"Thank me later!"
- Minor
- Avila's father. He barely knows he has children and spends all his time on his work at the Alchemists' Guild. As his family struggles, he only pulls away more. He just can't handle the strain, so he chooses to ignore it. Negligent and oblivious to the suffering of his children.
"Do you have another brother?"
"I’m sure **you** won’t disappoint us."
- Minor
- The chef of the *Faithful*. Boistrous and jovial, but also impatient.
"Breakfast! Eat it, or I will!"
"Let’s all act like adults here."
- Minor
- A crewmate of the *Faithful*. A job is a job to him, and he just wants to do his job in relative comfort. He's constantly nursing his gambling habit, and will bet on just about anything. Matter-of-fact, easily annoyed, and operating on a hangover most of the time.
"Aww, you named the character after me! How sweet."
"That’s it! Maybe this will taste better in some rum!"
- Minor
- The captain of the *Faithful*. Imperious and reckless. Rather than correcting anyone's behavior, he tolerates most of his crew's slacking until something goes wrong, then gets furious. Until things go wrong, though, he's agreeable and happy.
"To your stations, 'crew'."
"Are you men or boys? Get it together!"
- Supporting
- A classic 1940s-1950s office worker. He's just waiting for the bus, and he isn't trying to mess with anything weird that comes his way.
"You lost?"
"Wandering the streets alone... You could get into trouble."
- Background
- 2 parts available
- A sailor pushing through the crowd on the docks, chatting with their crewmates as they roll up the sails.
"...only twenty pieces for all that? Bastards..."
"Shore leave! Shore leave!"
- Background
- 8 parts available
- A dirty deckhand on a combustion ship from the 1940s to 1950s. Overworked and tired.
- "...in your direction, but we should pass right by..."
"Do you think we’ll get to talk to her? She’s basically an urban legend, right?"
"The captain isn’t crazy. We won’t be gone too long."
