The Glovelies (Radioplay about a 90s All-Girl Rock Band)

The Glovelies (Radioplay about a 90s All-Girl Rock Band)

Project Overview

Set in the late 90s, a group of high school girls form a rock band called "The Glovelies" (Named because they all wear matching gloves when they play) and perform their first concert at a Seattle venue. This is a relatively simple project I've put together than features a bit of acting and some music (which is popular music of the decade: No Doubt, Alanis Morisette, Green Day, etc.) So VOs who can also sing are a plus. It is told from their friend Natalie's point of view, who is recording the event like a reporter.

Chrissy (Lead Singer)

Chrissy is the reluctant lead singer of the group, who's natural talent and good looks should make her a heartbreaker, but she is terribly insecure about being a lead singer. Fortunately, her bass player, Katie, is very supportive and gets her to channel her inner Rock Goddess. When she sings, she really is a rock star.

  • (Discussing how she came to be in the band) Oh I'm no rock star. My love is musical theater, West Side Story, Singing in the Rain, I practically grew up on all the Disney soundtracks. It's just fun to do this with my friends, that's all... I kinda like the white gloves honestly, very theatrical. Makes playing piano a bit more tricky, but who ever said the music business was easy?

  • (Talking to her bass player, who's a natural onstage) God, Katie, how can you just get up there and take control of the audience like that? I can never do that.

  • SINGING:

Chrissy sings "Just a Girl" by No Doubt, very heavy and rock-solid (If possible, please sing to a karaoke track)

Katie is the bad-ass rocker chick bass player of the group who sings more like Joan Jett and carries that rock star attitude on-stage. Despite her tough exterior, she's very supportive on Chrissy, their lead singer.

  • (When questioned how she joined the band, she jokes around) I'm sorry, I don't talk to the press. Please leave me be... but in all seriousness (She's still not serious), basically everyone begged me to join the band, so I had no choice but to do it. It was kinda sad.

  • (To Chrissy, her lead singer) Chrissy, you have no idea how good you are. Seriously, you could be the next Gwen Stefani with a voice like that. And... well, let's face it, you're hot!

  • SINGING:

Katie sings "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morisette in a very raucous raspy tone (Please sing to a karaoke track if possible)

Camille (Drummer)

Camille is the founder of the group and completely full of herself, wanting to hog the spotlight.

  • (When questioned how she joined the band) Well I started the band, it was my idea... well me and Amy's idea, but I discovered Chrissy and knew we we'd be unstoppable with her out front. And don't listen to Katie, she was begging to join us from the getgo... The gloves were also my idea. They're our thing, and... well, between you and me, I get joint pain when I play drums, so the gloves really help.

  • SINGING:

Camille would mostly stick to singing harmonies, so if you want to sing anything to show your chops, that's fine.

Amy (Guitarist / Singer)

Amy is the shy guitarist of the group, though her face-melting guitar solos are a stark contrast to that. She secretly has a small crush on Chrissy, but doesn't want to let it known.

  • (When questioned how she joined the band, very shy) Um... like Camille said, we just wanted to play music.

  • (Camille lets it known that she likes Chrissy) Camille! Don't tell everyone that, it's embarrassing...

  • SINGING:

Amy sings harmony on the Cranberries song "Linger" so if you can find a karaoke track of that and sing the harmony part, go for it.

Natalie is the band's mutual friend who records their first show like a reporter and asks them questions. She's very excited and slightly nerdy.

  • Welcome everyone! This is Natalie and I'm here with The Glovelies on their first gig. And don't worry, I'm wearing my white gloves to show my appreciation. I look like Minnie Mouse if she was at a Green Day Concert, but what the heck?!
