Please read the details below for the expectations regarding taking on this role.
Due to past experiences with unprofessional behaviors from those who thought they could take advantage of my good nature and my willingness to help, these are my expectations, boundaries, and guidelines for the short audio project: Tobias: an Empath’s guide to getting it wrong prequel short.
—
Expectations if cast in the role of Tobias Birmingham: this is IMPORTANT. PLEASE READ the following:
—
1: You will have a one on one meeting with your director first before you jump into recording anything so that we may discuss questions you have about the project, the character, the story, deadlines, in what style the lines will be recorded, format for exporting said lines, and other topics relevant to the audiodrama short. This is a must, as it will establish a face to face connection AND this will happen via googlemeet, not zoom, or any other video calling service, Googlemeet is free and you do not need to download an app, it already comes with your gmail account.
2: You will be entitled to one or two live directed sessions only with your director, you must be capable and understand that self directed sessions will follow after these live directed sessions happen (that is also in case they are needed), however, following these two sessions if you need them, you must understand that your director is not and will not be available to be at your beck and call due to the difference in timezones, life commitments, project commitments, and health reasons. Let it be known that simply because live directing cannot happen consistently does not mean that you, the lead, will not be without assistance from your director if needed nor will you be in the dark about feedback or constructive criticism meant to redirect your performance to be the best that it can, you can ask for help or if you have a question about a line (I.e. pronunciation, context, etc.) You will receive a text or voice message via discord, social media, or an email (we will discuss a chosen method of communication in the 1v1 meeting) in regards to your query. If a line needs redone you will be informed in a professional manner and, if you miss a line retakes will be asked of, but your director will not hold your hand, your director will not guide you the whole time, they are not here to teach you how to break down a script, how to create a backstory, how to find your place in the story you are acting out, etc, and your director, most especially is, under no circumstances of you accepting this role, your friend, your mate, your anything, what they are is your boss and you are expected to act cordial, to follow the instructions as laid out in your script, and not to conduct your time with the director in a manner that crosses boundaries into the personal and is wholly unprofessional.
3: You will adhere to the set deadline to turn in your lines and if more time is needed on the basis of unexpected health or life circumstances beyond the booth, an extension will be granted to you.
4: Open lines of communication and respect of boundaries goes both ways. You will be expected to keep the lines of communication about the progress of your work on the script, open with your director, this does not mean checking in every day but simply a little heads up on where you are with lines or when you think you may finish them would be appreciated. Ghosting, going silent for weeks on end, or for some reason deciding that an unpaid project is "not worth your time", will be an instant end of working on this project. If you are disrespectful in any manner towards the director or towards any fellow cast members who are working on this project, be it ableism, sexism, homophobia, or general unpleasantness that leads to discomfort, including unsolicited and repeated crossing of boundaries if told Not to ask, oversharing of personal information, and the inability to take constructive critiques, etc, you will be given a warning and then asked to kindly depart the project. As a final note, by taking on this unpaid project you are agreeing to see it through to the end, in the past many have taken on unpaid and then decided it wasn’t “worth their priority", let it be known that You are doing yourself no favors by conducting yourself in that manner. Taking on a project, i.e. this one, that while Unpaid, the head creative has put time and effort into it and, in this case unpaid does not mean It is amateurish in nature. This project and its head creative are rooted in being professional on all accounts and not flying by the seat of its pants, not leaving actors in the dark, and not without having boundaries and expectations of conduct on account of all parties involved.
Respect is key and is a two way street on this project.

So. The last time I thought I had found my so called lead for this role, it ended not so great and they and I have parted. I will say the second lead is nearly done. If I cannot find a VO for Tobias here I’ll shelve the project entirely.
An inspired in universe playlist of songs Tobias might listen to.
Maybe listen to the songs here to get an idea of the character. Because he’s not an angry shouty one note character.

If you cannot follow the audition instructions how am I to trust that you will follow my direction if cast in the role? When audition instructions say read the lines three times that means you say the monologue once, you say it a second time, and then you do it again for a third time with emotional variations.
To quote Meisner: “playing angry is the most boring thing an actor can do.”
Show me the wide range of this character in your auditions. Because playing him angry and shouting isn’t impressing me.
Tobias Birmingham:
Born: 1991
Age in 2010: 19
Personality type: Tobias is a little bit rough around the edges, think Chloe Price (flip the gender) meets Dallas Winston from S.E. Hinton's the outsiders.
He has an older brother, Felix Birmingham, who is mentioned but not in this short. they do not get along.
Story:
Following his parents messy divorce, Tobias's family relocates to the states for a new beginning (he is twelve when this occurs) and he spends the remainder of his teens in America (which he hates). Finding Solace in British singers like David Bowie and other retro 80's bands/media, i.e. Labyrinth is his favorite film and his only favorite books are S.E. Hinton, Tobias seems like a troubled punk on the outside. Referring to himself as a "greaser" and other negative names, he has a low opinion of himself and of those around him. People are predictable and he is "good' at predicting how they'll react to him, i.e. he is often ignored or berated by teachers.
Tobias has an easily distracted mind and gets bored with his lessons leading to strife and a lackluster grade point average.
Enter Mariah, a girl who disarms him twice and starts to breakthrough his tough exterior, revealing a gentle softie underneath the hardshell.
----
Note: Tobias is implied to be an undiagnosed neurodivergent character.
Neurodiverse actors are encouraged to audition for him even if it is not explicitly stated he's neurodiverse.
Please note Tobias swears, you must be comfortable swearing as he is the narrator of this audiobook

Cain’s fucking academy, if you blur your vision and blink a bit, the long and grey american architecture looks a bit like a rectangular storage unit reject rather than an educational building fit for teachers and students where I’m learning, with such enthusiasm, all the things I already learned in primary school! It’s bonkers, you know!! I already know maths, reading, sciences, history, socialogy, we all know how it goes and yet here, Cain’s academy prides itself on doing the rinse and repeat! Ethics me this, Emmanuel Kant, have you ever felt as if all we do is go round and round the sun in a loop and do fuck all? Nay, you say, mr high and mighty with a bloody damned wig to boot? RIGHT THEN! Fuck academia.
