This swash-buckling tale follows the quest of Captain Jack Sparrow, a savvy pirate, and Will Turner, a resourceful blacksmith, as they search for Elizabeth Swann. Elizabeth, the daughter of the governor and the love of Will's life, has been kidnapped by the feared Captain Barbossa. Little do they know, but the fierce and clever Barbossa has been cursed. He, along with his large crew, are under an ancient curse, doomed for eternity to neither live, nor die. That is, unless a blood sacrifice is made.

Jack Sparrow is a cocky, witty, and savvy pirate that has acquired quite the reputation over the years for being selfish, greedy, sly, but charming and suave as well. He has a certain air about him that makes him likeable and yet still a dishonorable man. His motives for helping Will Turner retrieve Elizabeth Swann are not all noble. He wants to take revenge on Captain Barbossa for stealing his ship, The Black Pearl, and marooning him on a island several years before. No one ever quite knows what's going on in his head.
Well, then, I confess,
it is my intention to commandeer one of these ships,
pick up a crew in Tortuga,
raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise
pilfer my weasely black guts out!
Not just the Spanish Main, love.
The entire ocean.
The entire world.
Wherever we want to go, we'll go.
That's what a ship is, you know.
It's not just a keel and a hull and
a deck and sails, that's what a ship

Will turner is the young and dashing hero of the story. He is a young man who is humble, kind, and good-hearted, with a strong sense of his own morals. He is in pursuit to save Elizabeth Swann with clearly noble and selfless intentions. He is a common blacksmith that has fallen in love with Elizabeth and will stop at no cost to save her. Addtionally, Will Turner is the son of Boot-strap Bill, a man he admired as a child, though he did not know his father's piratical lifestyle. When he finally realizes his father's dark past, he begins to accept his own fate and begins to make his transformation into a pirate himself.

Elizabeth Swann is the daughter of the Governor. She is a boisterous, confident woman who knows what she wants but is constrained by her duties to her father and fulfilling her social role. She met Will Turner when he was a young boy when her father and her came across a ship wreck and saved him. After being captured by Captain Barbossa for possession of the golden medallion, she lies about her surname, not knowing the consequences of calling herself a Turner. She is head-strong and brave.

Captain Barbossa is a rugged, fearless, and ruthless pirate captain. He is determined and obsessed with lifting the curse laid upon him and his crew by the stolen Aztec Gold. In order to lift the curse they must return all pieces of the treasure and shed the blood of the child of Boot-Strap Bill Turner in order to complete the transformation back to mortals. His only concern is himself, and will not hesitate to obtain what he wants by any means necessary.

Norrington is the epitome of how a British officer should act and think. He is a strong advocate for the arrest and execution of pirates in order to restore peace and justice to the world. After receiving a promotion to the position as Commodore in the royal navy he decides to propose to Elizabeth Swann, who he is in love with. Overall he is a noble and kind hearted man who puts the needs of others above his own, though he has a sincere distaste for pirates.
That is without doubt
the worst pirate I have ever seen.
This promotion throws into sharp relief
that which I have not yet achieved.
A marriage to a fine woman.

This is a beautiful sword.
I would expect the man who made it
to show the same care and devotion
in every aspect of his life.

Elizabeth's father and the noble governor of Port Royal. He wants what's best for his daughter, and would be content to see her happily married- preferably to the well-to-do and high ranking Commodore Norrington. In the end though, his desire for her happiness wins out over all else.

Pintel is one of Barbossa's pirate crew. Seemingly gruff and vicious, he is as ruthless as any of the crew. He's always seen with his partner in crime, Ragetti, and is often rather humorous.

Ragetti is a one eyed pirate in Barbossa's crew. Undead like the rest, he is fearless and vicious in battle, but in general is a bit clumsy, often losing his wooden eye. He's always seen with his partner in crime, Ragetti.

Bootstrap Bill come back to haunt us.
This is just like what the Greeks done at Troy.

Practical, down-to-earth, and occasionally sensible, Joshamee Gibbs was everything Jack Sparrow was not. Gibbs was a superstitious man, having worried about pirates during his time with the British Royal Navy, then later of more supernatural entities. This affable ne'er-do-well did have some faults—he was prone to rum-drinking and idleness. He had even been found sleeping in a pig pen.

Like his partner, Murtogg was relatively dimwitted but did seem to have a knack for staying out of trouble. In fact, both the bumbling Murtogg and Mullroy were more a hindrance than a help for their former captain James Norrington. He was considered to be very skeptical when it comes to anything involving the supernatural, and regarded his partner's distrust that the Black Pearl wasn't a real ship with derision.
Oh, the Dauntless is
the power in these waters, true
enough, but there's no ship as can
match the Interceptor for speed.
Why aren't we doing what it was-
what Mr. Sparrow said we should do.

Like Murtogg, Mallory was rather slow-witted but did seem to have a talent for survival. He was initially considered to be very skeptical of superstition, as he regarded his partner's insistence that the Black Pearl was a real ship with derision.
Oh, and no ship that's not

a man so evil that Hell itself spat
him back out could possibly have black
sails therefore couldn't possibly
be any other ship than the Black
Pearl. Is that what you're saying?

Gillette was an upholder of the law and followed orders given to him. While stationed at Port Royal, Gillette served under Commodore James Norrington as his most trusted lieutenant and was in second command of the HMS Dauntless, the pride of the British Royal Navy. He never took any question in his orders and carried them out.

Twigg is one of the undead cursed crew members of the Black Pearl, under Barbossa. Like all the rest, he is ruthless and fearless.

Bo'sun was a large and tall man, likely of African origin. He was proud of his muscles and his position as Captain Hector Barbossa's First Mate at the Black Pearl. He was ruthless and brutal, and he never showed any problem with hitting anyone- even a woman, like Elizabeth Swann.
I didn't know we was taking on captives.

us here in the first place.

Koehler was a rude and selfish man, who did not stop at anything to get, what he wanted, and did not obey the methods or instructions of the Pirata Codex that he had to follow. Serving under Barbossa, Koehler was quite ruthless, able to kill without hesitation, and his quote regarding Elizabeth, speaks of his cruel side

Anamaria was a tough female smuggler and pirate who operated in the Caribbean. What little is known of her life came largely from her adventures with the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow, who once referred to Anamaria as the "delicate flower of the Caribbean." She knows well how to handle a ship, and doesn't hesitate to give Captain Jack a well deserved slap for stealing from her.

The Harbormaster seemed like a loyal servant of the King, but years of mixing with maritime riffraff had corrupted him. When Captain Jack Sparrow offered a small bribe of three shillings to keep his arrival secret, the Harbormaster couldn't resist and accepted this bribe.

Estrella was a maid most notably employed in Port Royal in Governor Weatherby Swann's household, serving under both Governor Swann and his daughter Elizabeth Swann.

Theodore Groves was a 'by the book' naval officer. Although he was the upholder of the law, he had an admiration for the life of a pirate. This can be seen when he gave comments about Jack Sparrow's successful escapes from James Norrington. Though he had an interest in a pirate's life, he remained in service of the King's Royal Navy.
That's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen.
