Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door Remake Fandub: CHAPTER 2

Project Overview

Hey, I'm EmpoleonNerd (Emp for short)!

One of my favorite video games of all time is Paper Mario: the Thousand-Year Door. So as you can imagine, I was hyped as hell when the remake for the Switch was announced.

Therefore, I thought it'd be an incredibly fun project to do a fully dubbed playthrough of the game and post it on Youtube! I know it's a massive task to take on, but as someone who has been cast in countless fan projects only to be disappointed when the project ends up cancelled, I am determined to get as far as we can with this project.

As of now, we are about halfway-ish through Chapter 1. We're doing this casting call now because we're getting closer to the end of Chapter 1, but also because our Goombella VA has disappeared on us, so we need to recast her before we can continue posting any more parts of Chapter 1. So I thought I might as well include her on this casting call and kill two birds with one stone.

I am ideally looking for actors with as good microphone quality as possible. I'm not picky enough to nitpick and insist on absolutely PERFECT mic quality, but I'm hoping for at the very least close to no background noise and minimal peaking.

My priority is having fitting voices for the character, so actors can be cast for more than one role (although I will, of course, try to be fair and not have one actor hog TOO many roles).

I'm taking a few roles here and there (mostly minor roles, like tutorial narration and some minor NPCs), but for the most part I want to keep my distance and leave most of the roles to the casted actors (Because let's be real, if I wanted to just voice the characters myself I'd just do a solo voiced playthrough).

Once we reach the deadline, I'll start making my casting decisions. I'll message the casted actors and invite them to our Discord server (if they're comfortable with it, I won't make it mandatory). As mentioned, we're about halfway-ish through Chapter 1. Once we cast a new voice for Goombella (probably going to do that earlier than the project deadline), we'll continue our progress, and we'll hopefully be able to get caught up to Chapter 2 by the time we reach the deadline on this casting call!

    Jeez, CCC is weird with its timezones, I set the time the auditions close at like 7 hours from now. Either way, I'm gonna go ahead a little early and start messaging people who are cast!

Madame Flurrie is the third partner in the game. She's a wind spirit and a retired actress. She moves to the Boggy Woods to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but she still desperately craves the attention and excitement of performing on the big stage.


Flurrie's voice should have the cadence of an old-timey actress. I could see a transatlantic accent or southern belle voice fitting the character. Her voice should also convey the confidence and large personality of a famous theatre actress.


This role will have a lot of lines in Chapter 2, and a few here and there later on.

Punio is a young Puni, and the future leader of the Puni tribe in the Great Tree. He's very timid and nervous, but throughout the events of chapter 2, he works up the courage to rally his people against the X-Nauts and Jabbi that are taking over their home (with Mario's help, of course).


Punio's voice should sound like a young boy, potentially even a teen. What's important is that he should sound like he's not fully matured yet. He should sound timid, but still capable of working up courage when necessary. I'm mainly looking for a more high-pitched voice (to fit with his small size), but we may end up pitching up the audio post-recording, so I'm open to less high-pitched voices.


This role will have a lot of lines in this chapter, and then a few lines in the future.

Puniper is a Puni of the Puni tribe in the Great Tree. He's very wary and has difficulty trusting strangers. He argues with Punio because he thinks that Punio isn't tribe leader material. However, ultimately he just cares deeply about the tribe and wants to protect his people.


Puniper should sound older than Punio. He should sound a little tougher than the other Punis, but still in fear about the invasion of their home. He should also probably not sound TOO deep-voiced, to match his small size (although we may end up just pitching up their voices to make them sound smaller, so I'm open to hearing deeper takes on his voice).


This role will have a few lines this chapter, then not much else afterwards.

The Puni elder is an elderly Puni, and the leader of the Puni tribe. She initially comes off as feeble and pleasant, but she's capable of getting very loud and furious when the 'young punks' are acting up. She scolds Punio because she wants to train him to be a good future leader. She's a little senile, and she often rambles on for hours with her lectures.


The elder's voice should sound like a very old lady. It should be able to convey two sides of her character: an innocent, pleasant grandmother, and an agitated, cranky old lady.


This role will have a decent few lines in chapter 2, and then not much else later on.

  • Well! I'm shocked! Who makes fun of a old woman like that! Honestly! Why, if I were just ten years younger, I'd show you! Oh, you'd best believe it! I'll have you know that in my younger days, I was considered a Puni prize! I had so many suitors, I had to fight them off! Eeeh hee hee hee hee hee! Now that I think about it, there was a particularly fine boy named Punderton...

Petuni is a young Puni, and the younger sister of Punio. She loves and cares for her older brother deeply. She's still very young, so she's easily intimidated by the X-Nauts invading the Great Tree.


Petuni should sound like a very young girl. Her voice should convey a 'wholesome little sister' energy. She should definitely sound high pitched, although we may end up pitching up her voice anyways, so lower voices aren't unwelcome.


This role will have a few lines in chapter 2, and then a few here and there later on.

Toadette is a female Toad that helps out Mario by giving tutorials on upgrades to his boots or hammer. She's very enthusiastic about her work, and is very excited to be helping out Mario.


I think Toadette's voice should be pretty standard to what she's sounded like in other games. She sounds similar to Toad, but not necessarily with the same amount of rasp all the time.


This role will have a short chunk of lines every once in a while (whenever Mario gets a boots or hammer upgrade, which should be in Chapters 2, 3, 6, and 7).

Goombella, your first partner in the game, is a sassy, intelligent Goomba. She's a graduate of the University of Goom, and demonstrates her education well through her descriptions of locations, citizens, and enemies' weaknesses. She's not one to stay silent when uncomfortable advances are made on her, and will call them out on being a creep without hesitation.


This role is a recasted role, meaning we had a voice actress for this role previously, but we've unfortunately had to make the decision to find a new voice for her. What that means for this audition is that we'd like you to try to match her Goombella voice as closely as possible. (If you can't match the voice, you're still absolutely free to audition, just know that I'd need to be pretty impressed with it to take her voice in a completely different direction.)

This role will likely have a decent amount of lines. There won't be TOO much, since we've finished dubbing the prologue, which is where she has the most significance. But we'll be trying to squeeze in moments for her when we can. If cast, you'll definitely have at least SOME work right away, as we have lines in Chapter 1 that we're still missing.


(IMPORTANT NOTE: We will probably be casting this role earlier than the deadline, since we need a Goombella voice as soon as possible. How long that will take is undecided at the moment, and will depend on if we can find an audition that we're satisfied with. If you're interested in this role, I would recommend sending in your audition as soon as you possibly can.)
