Over the Garden Wall Full Fandub
Project Overview
Over the Garden Wall is an Emmy-winning animated fantasy miniseries, created by Adventure Time writer and animator Patrick McHale, that aired on Cartoon Network in 2014. It follows 2 brothers, Wirt and Greg, who find themselves lost in a mysterious forest called The Unknown. They meet a bluebird named Beatrice, who offers to guide them through the wilderness on their way home. Along the way, they meet a colorful cast of characters. The series is full of layers, hidden meaning, and symbolism, but also some really great humor. Not to mention it’s got a perfect autumn vibe. I really love watching it in October. And for that reason, it is truly one of my favorite pieces of media. So I’ve decided to produce a full fandub of this show!
Below are all the characters I have to cast (listed mostly in order of appearance). There are two notable characters not on the list. They are the frog (whose name changes 11 times over the course of the series), and The Beast, the formidable antagonist who roams The Unknown, turning lost souls into Edelwood trees. It’s because I cast myself in those roles. Please note that there are PLENTY of other small roles not listed (not to mention ensemble), so if you try out, you’ll get in. The more the merrier, honestly. Just remember to leave your Discord info in your audition! Additionally, while I certainly need the lines listed in the audition, feel free to do more if you wish!
Characters are listed mostly in order of apprearance.
Please note that there are some spoilers in the character descriptions and even audition lines. So if you haven’t seen this series (which I highly recommend, even if you aren’t planning to try out), proceed with caution!

The protagonist of the series. Awkward and pessimistic teenage boy (about 14ish, I think) who takes himself WAY too seriously (to a comical degree). Has a tendency to break into poetic monologues. (Big theater kid energy, lol.) Genuinely loves his half-brother Greg, even if he is constantly annoyed with him at times. Easily frightened, but becomes courageous in the end. Originally voiced by Elijah Wood.
Sings "The Adelaide Parade", "Like Ships", and "Wirt's Terrible Love Song"

[sighs as he lays back] I dunno. Sometimes I feel like I'm just like... [melodramatically, almost trance-like] a boat, upon a winding river... twisting, towards an endless black sea...Further, and further, drifting away... from where I want to be—who!—I want to be...
Well, I—I have a this crush on this girl….That’s all…. And I think about her a lot, and I play clarinet!…And I SECRETLY WHISPER POETRY TO MYSELF IN MY ROOM AT NIGHT!
(Losing hope) Greg? Can we please stop pretending we’re gonna get home?…Can we admit we’re lost for good? That this fog is deeper than we can ever understand? That we are but wayward leaves, scattered to the air by an indifferent wind? Can we just admit we’re never gonna get back home, Greg? Can we do that?
Wirt’s younger half-brother (about 8-10ish, I think). The most wholesome character ever, he is pretty much the exact opposite of Wirt. There’s a running gag where he’s trying to come up with a name for his new pet frog. Relentlessly optimistic and imaginative, his childlike innocence is proves to be his greatest strength. Originally voiced by Collin Dean.
Sings "Potatoes and Molasses", and "The Adelaide Parade"

Oh. I didn’t know that. Did you know that if you soak a raisin in grape juice, it turns back into a grape? It’s a rock fact!
(Beatrice said she’ll owe him a favor) Whoa. I get a wish? (No, not a wish, I’m not magical. I’ll just do you a good turn.) Can you turn me into a tiger? (Again, I’m not magical) It doesn’t have to be a magical tiger.
(Wirt has said Greg can do whatever he wants) Anything? That’s a LOT of power…(tree falls down) Wirt! Oh no! Did I knock down that tree with my powers? Sorry. Are you okay?
A talking bluebird who guides Greg and Wirt through The Unknown (if you’re familiar with Dante’s Divine Comedy…yeah, that’s a reference, lol). Clever and snarky, but ultimately kind. Originally a human girl, she was cursed into her form (along with the rest of her family) after she threw a rock at a bluebird. She promises to bring them to Adelaide of the Pasture, who she claims can bring them home. Initially has ulterior motives, but comes to genuinely care for them over the course of the series. Originally voiced by Melanie Lynskey.

Thanks! I owe you a favor, so, um—you two are lost kids with no purpose in life, right? [with a flourish, like she's telling a story] How about I bring you to Adelaide of the Pasture, the Good Woman of the Woods? She can help you get home!
Lady, Bluebirds are good luck. We ing joy and happiness to the—AAH! (Is hit with a broom) Curse you, lady! Curse you! You’ll die someday, and I’ll laugh—LAUGH!!! (Laughs, is hit again)
Wirt, that stuff's not weird. Those are just—(sighs) well, the poetry thing is weird. But those are just character traits!
An old, mysterious woodsman who lives in the forest who encounters Greg and Wirt as they enter The Unknown. Carries a lantern that holds his daughter’s soul in its flame. An unwilling slave to The Beast, but a genuinely a good man who wants the boys to be safe. Originally voiced by Christopher Lloyd.

What're you doing here?! Explain yourselves!! These woods are no place, for children! Don't you know the Beast is afoot here?…Well, welcome to the Unknown, boys. You're more lost than you realize.
BEGONE, BEAST! I'VE FOUGHT YOU FOR THE LANTERN BEFORE, AND I'LL FIGHT YOU AGAIN!… YOU LEAVE THOSE CHILDREN BE!…BEAST!…BEAST!
(to the Beast) Hold your tongue, our I’ll remove if from your mouth! Do not speak of my daughter. She would not wish this. (To Greg) Let’s get you free…
Village elder of Pottsfield. Frightening at first, but he’s actually got a pretty chill, laid back sense of humor. Originally voiced by Chris Isaak.

[friendly] Well, now, hold on everybody. Heh, let's not jump to any conclusions.
[chuckle, his friendliness becomes passive-aggressive] Heh, now let me get this straight: you come to our town, you trample our crops—you interrupt our private engagement—and now you wanna leave?
Ah, what a wonderful harvest... [rumbling as he turns to address Wirt, deeper-voiced] And what about you? You sure you wanna leave? [resigned] Oh, well. [turns away] You'll join us someday...
The hopelessly lovesick schoolteacher at the School House. Pines after her fiancé Jimmy Brown, who disappeared right after he proposed 3 days ago. (Yes, that’s the joke, lol.) Originally voiced by Janet Klein.

Please, take your seat, children. You're late. You know the rules -- "Once the bell has run, class has begun."
Young man, I will not stand for such nonsense in my classroom. I got enough nonsense from that no good, two-timing, low-down handsome man of mine. Oh, Jimmy Brown, why did you have to leave me so? And now, with my father threatening to close the school and that wild gorilla on the loose, why, Jimmy, I just have one thing to say...
Ah, isn't it grand—all these fine people giving out of the goodness of their hearts? (Sighs) Not like my Jimmy Brown. All he ever did was steal my heart away.

(Barges in during Potatoes and Molasses) THAT'S ENOUGH! Is this what I've been paying for?! I didn't invest in this school for fun. I thought we were trying to do important work here, teaching animals to count and spell.
Ohh! Who would've thought making a primer school for animals was a bad idea? My life savings, my home -- everything I had went into that dear, dear school. And now I'm forced to sell these instruments just to keep it open. All the while that loathsome Jimmy Brown is off gallivanting who knows where! Not to mention that wild gorilla on the loose. (Sighs) if only something would go right for a change. (Snoring)
(Emotional) I guess the world really is as sweet as potatoes and molasses.

Pilgrim, he who caries the Dark Lantern must be the Beast….And now you’re more lost than ever.
A sinister highwayman who Wirt and Greg meet in the Tavern. Really only one line and a short song, but it’s very memorable, so I’m looking for something specific enough to warrant a true audition instead of just choosing someone who auditions for other roles. If you know his song, I encourage you to sing it for the audition. Originally voiced by Blues singer Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton.

An eccentric, very wealthy tea magnate who Greg and Wirt encounter in The Unknown. They pretend to be his long lost nephews to con him out of some money for a ferry ride to Adelaide’s house. Ultra-posh (to a comedic degree) British accent. Originally voiced by John Cleese*.

Ha ha! Yes! It's all for the money! Yes, the money takes my mind off my troubles— the deep soul-crushing loneliness. (shivers) Yes, the more money I make, the bigger my mansion gets, the more lost I feel. (sobs) Why, this house is so big, I sometimes don't even know where or who I am! (laughs)
Uh, yes, yes. maybe it would be—be good —to talk to someone. Well, y— (clears throat) actually, it all began one day when I was exploring my exceedingly large and labyrinthine manor here. I happened upon a section of the house I didn't even recall building. (laughs)..I-I saw the painting of the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, and that's when things took a rather strange turn.
So you—you mean that beautiful ghost was really just…my business competitor?

Mysterious woman who takes care of Lorna. Controls the evil spirit possessing her with a magical golden bell. Seems evil at first, but it's ultimately left kind of ambiguous in the end. I like to think she really is kind at heart, but maybe I'm just an optimist. Either interpretation is valid in my opinion. Originally voiced by Tim Curry.

(With sadness) Oh, Lorna. (Sniffs) That’s wonderful, dear....Well, now that you’re cured, you won’t be needing old Auntie Whispers any more to look after you.

(The North Wind appears) Oh no!
The majestic and kind queen of Cloud City. Appears to Greg to grant a wish after he saves the city from The North Wind. (There’s a theory that this is only a facade, and she’s really The Beast in disguise, manipulating Greg. It's not confirmed...but it's got some plausibility. Do with that what you will.) This is a double cast role, because they're both originally voiced by Shirley Jones, and since they are 2 very small roles anyway, you will be cast as both characters. Old Lady Daniels is Greg and Wirt's elderly neighbor in the real world. Beatrice’s Mother, is...well, pretty self-explanatory. Like her daughter, she has also been turned into a bluebird. Very loving and caring, and a little overbearing.
