On the Flesh Imperishable

On the Flesh Imperishable

Project Overview

Amid the height of Rome’s power, one of its most shadowed figures walks the line between empire and eternity. As legions march into the dark forests of Germania, he seeks not victory through steel, but a truth whispered in blood and mist—knowledge that promises to outlast marble, crown, and flesh alike. Woven through the clash of cultures and the ambitions of rulers is a hidden struggle the Empire’s hunger for dominion against an older, more ancient hunger that cannot be conquered. At its heart lies a single, haunting riddle—only true flesh is imperishable.

Nero Claudius Drusus Germanicus—better known as Drusus the Elder—was born in 38 BC, son of Livia Drusilla and stepson to Augustus himself. Brother to Tiberius, father to Claudius, grandfather to Caligula, and great-grandfather to Nero. His bloodline shaped emperors. But Drusus was no mere noble—he was a soldier, the first Roman commander to push across the Rhine, to set eyes on the Weser and the Elbe. He crushed the Sicambri, the Batavi, the Frisii, the Chauci. He broke the Marsi, the Chatti, the Cherusci—tribes who thought themselves unconquerable. His men adored him, and in single combat he struck down Germanic chieftains, perhaps winning the spolia opima itself. And yet, at the height of his triumph, death came not by sword, but by a horse’s stumble in 9 BC. Rome’s advance into Germania faltered with him. His soldiers raised a monument, the Drususstein, so his name would not be forgotten. And in time, his son Claudius exalted his memory. Drusus—the general who almost carried Rome beyond the Rhine.

Rome’s first Emperor, a man of immense dignity and controlled authority. Outwardly, he is the embodiment of stability and order — a ruler who reshaped the world into an empire and now rules with a calm, almost priest-like composure. Yet beneath that marble exterior lies a father mourning lost heirs, a statesman measuring the weight of every decision, and an old lion who feels the creeping burden of age and legacy.

  • AUGUSTUS (quietly, without turning, grief) Tiberius has spoken to me. He says the end was swift. I would believe him… but I have known enough campaigns to doubt there is any mercy in dying far from home.

  • AUGUSTUS (politic tone) Ah, Senator — a pleasure to see you again. I present to you Arminius, son of Segimerus of the Cherusci. Arminius, this is Senator Publius Quinctilius Varus.

  • AUGUSTUS (rising tone, scream)*rising heavy breathing* Publius Quinctilius Varus… give me back my legions!

A Cherusci prince raised in Rome, polished in its schools and hardened in its legions. To Romans, he is the model auxiliary officer: disciplined, loyal, and fluent in their tongue. To his own people, he is a of the forest, bound by blood and memory. He walks between two worlds with calculated restraint, concealing his fury beneath the manners of a soldier and the charm of a courtier.

  • ARMINIUS (rising from his seat, voice carrying over the hall epic speech) We have bent our necks long enough! We have given Rome our sons to fight in their wars, our grain to feed their legions, our daughters to bear their blood! They tell us we are allies. But an ally who must bow before every order, pay every tribute, and suffer every insult — is no ally! They build their roads through our forests, not for trade, but for conquest. They raise their forts on our rivers, not to guard us, but to watch us. Every Roman camp in Germania is a chain on our people. Every banner they plant is a stone laid upon our chest. And if we wait, those stones will become a tomb.

  • ARMINIUS (low, measured, feeling betrayed) Why here, Lucius? After all we spoke of in Rome… after what I told you. Did you think this… would remind me of my place? That staring at their bodies would bend my knee a little lower?

  • ARMINIUS (sharp, almost shaking with rage): Civilized? You mean shackled. You mean taught to bow and smile while you strip my people bare. You gave me chains plated in gold and called them honor. You think I should be grateful for learning your ways, when every word, every lesson was a blade turned against my own blood?

Publius Quinctilius Varus, an experienced Roman senator in the age of Augustus. A man forged in the crucible of empire, Varus is both respected and feared—known for his uncompromising rule, heavy taxation, and ruthless suppression in the name of Roman supremacy. Yet his ambition has bred disaster before, leaving scars from his time in Syria. Now, with Germania placed under his charge, the stakes rise higher than ever: a land untamed, a people unbroken, and a destiny that may bring eternal glory… or catastrophic ruin.

  • VARUS For the crime of theft against the property of the Legion, and thus against the dignity of the Emperor himself, the judgment is death — to be executed here, before all, without delay.

  • VARUS (scowling, the decision hardening in his eyes) Enough. This is madness. Segestes, you insult the best German in my service. You think I would believe your half-broken Latin over the man who has brought me treaties, men, and peace?

  • VARUS (roaring, straining against bonds): Arminius! Ungrateful dog! Rome took you in when you were nothing! We gave you a home, an education, the tongue of Cicero, the armor of our legions! We made you a man — a civilized man! And this is how you repay it?

A Germanic noble who stands unwaveringly with Rome. Unlike others of his people, Segestes sees not betrayal but destiny in the empire’s rise, an opportunity for order, power, and survival under Roman might.

In performance, Segestes speaks broken, halting English when addressing Romans, a reflection of his limited Latin, while in his own tongue, Among fellow Germans, his voice is rich and authoritative.

  • SEGESTES (urgent, calling out) Gubernator Varus! Gubernator Varus! Gubernator Varus! Stop. We must speak. Now. It is— danger. Große Gefahr. You ride into trap.

  • SEGESTES (rising slowly, voice measured but firm, loud for all to hear) Your words are fire, Hermann… but fire burns not only the enemy. The Romans bring more than chains — they bring law, order, roads, coin. They have made the rivers safe for trade, and the markets full. Our people no longer starve through the winter, as they once did. To turn against them is to turn against the peace we have won.

  • THE CRONE (voice cracking with delight, blind eyes wide) So… it is true. The fog bore you here. Chosen! Drawn like moths into the flame. (leans forward, teeth black and broken) I am pleased. Pleased beyond all telling. The ground drinks your blood, and He stirs beneath the roots.

  • THE CRONE (smiling, her voice cracked but rich with glee) Yes… yes. Proud names, proud blood. Rome and tribe together. All as He foresaw. (tilts her head, eyes clouded, lips curling) But it is not I who summoned you. (points toward the hut, her long finger trembling) The Master waits inside.

  • CRONE (shrieking over chaos, yell) You fool! You tear the root! You unmake the pact!
