honest, hard-working, and determined. Down-to-earth and responsible, Applejack is a country mare at heart, not caring much for complicated etiquette or frilly clothes.
"Well, howdy-doo, Miss Twilight, a pleasure makin' your acquaintance. I'm Applejack. We here at Sweet Apple Acres sure do like making new friends!"
"Why of all the... This is your sister Applejack, remember? The loyalest of friends and the most dependable of ponies?"
"I saw a vision of us feudin' and fightin'. I couldn't face the truth, so I started tellin' lies. Can you ever forgive me?"
Scootaloo is energetic and tomboyish, much like her idol Rainbow Dash. She complains about having to listen to "sappy" and "namby-pamby" stories in The Cutie Mark Chronicles. However, like the other Crusaders, she finds Big McIntosh and Cheerilee's romance charming in Hearts and Hooves Day. Although brash and spunky, she is skittish and self-conscious in Sleepless in Ponyville.
"I said, you got a problem with blank flanks?"
"I don't care if I ever get my cutie mark as long as I get to hang out with my best friends."
"Squawk! Look—I'm a chicken!"
True to her name, Sweetie Belle is very kindhearted and innocent. Despite this, she is often mischievous, vain, naive, and impetuous. However, Sweetie Belle remains positive and well-meaning in times of crisis, especially if she is responsible.
"She could be a great scientist, or an amazing artist, or a famous writer. She could even be mayor of Ponyville some day."
"You're making grape juice? Rarity would call the fashion police on me if I got grape juice anywhere near her precious outfits!"
"I don't think Rarity would let me travel to the far reaches of Equestria for cutie mark problems."
When first introduced, Babs is very shy and meek. However, to avoid being bullied, she acts mean and aggressively to Apple Bloom and her friends. After being saved by the Cutie Mark Crusaders, who abort their chance at retaliation, she reverts back to her kind ways and is forgiven. She even protects them from Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon's bullying. She has a habit of blowing her mane out of her eyes, and previously had a habit of covering her flank with her tail when reminded of her lack of a cutie mark.
"Looks like somepony's pumpkin just got squashed!"
"Heya, cuz! How y'been? Sunny an' me have been lookin' forward to meetin' you."
"See ya later, Cutie Mark Crybabies!"
Gabby is portrayed in her debut episode as very cheerful and excitable, prone to fits of elated squealing and cheering. Unlike most griffons, who are perceived as unfriendly, short-tempered, and greedy, Gabby is kind, considerate, and helpful. She enjoys helping others purely for the sake of it, and despite the discouragement of being unable to get a cutie mark of her own, she goes out of her way to cheer up others whom she believes to be feeling down.
"The Cutie Mark Crusaders! I can't believe it's really, really you!"
"There was this whole thing where I pretended to get a cutie mark because griffons don't get cutie marks, so Princess Twilight had Spike send a bunch of letters off to Griffonstone about the first griffon ever to get a cutie mark! Which I didn't really have."
"I have to say, after not hanging out with you, I understand why. You're kinda awesome! And I know what it's like to miss that now, too."
Once transformed back to her former self, Princess Luna is remorseful and tearful upon seeing her older sister. She runs to Celestia's side, apologizing for what she had done. The two sisters later join the celebration in Ponyville, where Luna receives a welcome wreath in wonderment, and gazes up with an anxious smile at her older sister. However, as stated in Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?, Luna's sense of guilt causes her to create the Tantabus in order to give herself nightmares every night as punishment for the suffering she caused as Nightmare Moon.
"Citizens of Ponyville! We have graced your tiny village with our presence so that you might behold the real princess of the night! A creature of nightmares no longer, but instead a pony who desires your love and admiration! Together we shall change this dreadful celebration into a bright and glorious feast!"
"Hello, everypony! Did I miss anything?"
"I understand what you're going through, Sweetie Belle. I, too, have a sister who often shines more brightly than me, and with this I have struggled."
Prince Blueblood is a royal male unicorn pony who resides in Canterlot. He is the distant nephew of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna and the cousin of Princess Cadance. He starts out as the object of Rarity's affections, but once they meet in person, he falls short of her expectations.
"My royal lips have touched common carnival fare!"
"Ewww...! Uh, stay back! I just had myself groomed!"
Throughout his appearances, Shining Armor is portrayed as kind, caring, and protective. He has a very close relationship with his little sister Twilight Sparkle, and he is warm and loving toward his fiancée (and later wife) Princess Cadance. True to being the captain of the royal guard, he is also stern at times, as seen in Games Ponies Play and Twilight's Kingdom - Part 2. Despite his professionalism, Shining Armor has had moments of immaturity, like bawling his eyes out in Slice of Life and coddling his previous childhood possessions in The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows, and playfulness, like setting up scavenger hunts for Twilight in The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows and talking like a baby in A Flurry of Emotions. In Sparkle's Seven, he is shown to be very competitive, especially towards Twilight. And despite a flashback to their youth showing he wasn't as academically skilled as his sister, he is shown to be very skilled in planning the new castle defenses, and able to anticipate every aspect of Twilight's plan to evade them.
"A threat has been made against Canterlot. We don't know who is responsible for it, but Princess Celestia asked that I help provide additional protection."
"Let's just say the Empire... isn't the only thing that's returned."
"Gotta admit, it was unexpected for you to do everything exactly how I thought you would. But you should know by now there's no way to beat the true Sibling Surpreme!"
Prince Rutherford is portrayed as loud and incredibly short-tempered. He is usually gracious enough to meet with Twilight and her friends on calm footing, but he becomes volatile if something displeases him, typically flying into a destructive rampage. He is, however, cultured enough to appreciate classical music.
"We leave now! Yak go to train, return with more yaks! We declare war!"
"Blueblood right. Rutherford need to take more time to himself."
"Aww, Prince Rutherford knew it Pink Pony all along! Yaks best at guessing."
In her first appearance, Ember proves determined and stubborn, desiring to become Dragon Lord so she can be more than just a "little princess". Though she is initially against the concepts of friendship and helping, she forms a bond with Spike, even saving him from Garble, and agrees to share letters with Twilight regarding the ways of dragons.
"I'm smarter than most of these boulderheads and you know it!"
"I don't care what my dad said! I'll show him and every dragon who thinks I'm just a little princess there are better things than being big and strong!"
"Oh, I don't know about a Daring Do book, but I remember once seeing a passing griffon carrying a gold bound book with a dragon on the front, many years ago. I think the griffon was called... Gilda?"
In The Times They Are A Changeling, Thorax, unlike most of his kind, is demonstrably amiable and considerate with a sincere yearning for friendship. However, prior to meeting Spike, he bears much doubt that anyone could ever want to be friends with a changeling. When offered kindness or surrounded by love, Thorax occasionally reverts to his basic impulses and hisses threateningly at others.
"The ice is pretty slippery. I wouldn't want you to get hurt because of me."
"I want to know all about friendship, and maybe one day I can take that knowledge back to the Changeling Kingdom! If my kind learned how to create love for one another, maybe they wouldn't have to take it from others!"
"There you are! The hive has been worried sick! Why did you leave without telling us? The last time you and your friends did that, it almost brought our kingdoms to war!"
Princess Skystar is portrayed as very cheerful, bubbly, quirky, and talkative. Lonely and yearning for friends, she quickly grows attached to the Mane Six—particularly Pinkie Pie, whose excitability and eccentricities match her own. Skystar is also very imaginative and creative, making various trinkets and even imaginary friends out of seashells, and somewhat rebellious and impulsive, demonstrated when she disobeys her mother to help her new friends on dry land.
"How do I know I can trust you?"
"Hellooooooo! Me again! [giggles] I'm gonna get so grounded."
"I wanna help too. 'Cause ya know... one small thing... [whispering] can make a really big difference."
Queen Novo is portrayed as nonchalant, sarcastic, and somewhat egotistical. Distrustful of outsiders, she is very hostile toward the Mane Six at first and secretive about the history surrounding herself and her subjects. Though she is briefly sympathetic to the plight that Equestria faces, Novo is mainly concerned about the safety of her own kingdom and keeping her magic pearl out of the Storm King's hands. If someone tries to steal from her or betrays her trust, she becomes furious and vengeful, as shown when she banishes the Mane Six from Seaquestria.
"Princess Skystar, what have you done?! You know surface dwellers are forbidden here!"
"All of this so you could sneak in and take the pearl?! This is why we don't bring strangers into our home! You don't deserve to be one of us."
"Honey, I'm sorry about your home. I truly am. But my responsibility is to protect my subjects. The pearl is not going anywhere."
Granny Smith is an elderly female Earth pony. She is Applejack, Apple Bloom, and Big McIntosh's paternal grandmother and a recurring character in the series. True to the family tendency for cutie marks to feature an apple-based product, hers is an apple pie.
"Applejack, you had us so caught up in all the doin', we haven't had a second to enjoy the company of the folks we've been doin' it with!"
"Your sister was plumb loco about catchin' the Great Seedlin' when she was your age. Same as you are now. Worse, even."
"Dropped my second best teeth right in the pigpen, and that was the worst case of apple blight I have ever seen!"
Big McIntosh is a male Earth pony, the older brother of Applejack and Apple Bloom, Sugar Belle's husband, and a member of the Apple family. He makes his debut in the first episode, during which he idly walks in Ponyville the moment Twilight Sparkle first arrives. Later, Applejack introduces him during the Apple family reunion, although he has no speaking roles until the fourth episode, Applebuck Season. He is soft-spoken and laconic, and often replies with a simple "eeyup" or "nnope." He is first called by the nickname Big Mac in The Cutie Pox. Later episodes refer to him with this nickname more often than with his real name, even in the credits.
"Biting off more than you can chew is just what I'm afraid of."
"Eeyup-yup-yup-yup-yup-yup-yeah-yeah-you did something! Wwwhoa, what's happening? I feel really weird! I'm talkin' so much! And I'm so articulate! Enunciating with such precise pronunciation! Annie Apple awoke and accidentally ate an auburn azalea! [screams] Make it stop!"
"I think just 'Bloom' has a nice ring to it, don't you, Applejack?"
Aunt and Uncle Orange are the married Earth pony aunt and uncle of Applejack in the Apple family. They are simply called by their titles-and-shared-name Aunt Orange and Uncle Orange both in The Cutie Mark Chronicles and in Gameloft's mobile game, while the latter Orange is called by that as well as his individual name Mosely Orange in various merchandise.
"'Y'all.' [laughs] Isn't she just the living end?"
"Don't worry. We'll have you acting like a true Manehattanite in no time."
"[chuckle] How quaint."
Hayseed Turnip Truck first appears in Sweet and Elite, greeting Rarity in Canterlot while cleaning windows. He says to have met Rarity at a hoedown in Ponyville and ends up humiliating her in front of Jet Set and Upper Crust.
"It's me, Hayseed Turnip Truck! We met at the big hoedown in Ponyville last month?"
"She's beautiful, isn't she?"
"She's a real big-time fancy pants dressmaker there! Probably made that real purty thing she's got on her head!"
Auntie Applesauce is an elderly Earth pony and a member of the Apple family who first appears in the season three episode Apple Family Reunion. She is the great-grandaunt of Applejack and her siblings and Granny Smith's aunt.
"A lady never reveals the age of her teeth."
"I suppose, although I have been told that too much excitement can wreak havoc on this youthful complexion of mine."
"Applejack, delightful to see you. Are you gonna join us in some quiltin'?"
Apple Rose is an elderly Earth pony and a member of the Apple family who first appears in the season three episode Apple Family Reunion. She is Granny Smith's favorite cousin.
"We're gonna win this one, cousin!"
"Golden Delicious? I think he's racing with his cousin!"
Goldie Delicious is a relative of the Apple family introduced in Pinkie Apple Pie. She keeps a number of cats and she is shown to be a hoarder of items and heirlooms.
"Now that's how you run an errand."
"Now that's how you make an entrance!"
"Y'all sure you don't want to take any of these Apple family heirlooms home with you?"
As portrayed canon-wise, Pear Butter was a caring and forgiving pony who loved her family but had shown her headstrong and determined especially after her father and mother-in-law had discovered her relationship with her husband.
I can't help it. We just sorta... happened.
What? [laughs] That's way longer than we've been together.
The Apples are my family now, too.
Bright Mac cultivated a number of qualities that his children later developed, including a penchant for honesty and an appreciation for simplicity shared by Pear Butter.
Happy one hundred and thirty-one thousand, four hundred and fifty-six hour anniversary, darlin'.
I don't want to be apart from you. Ever. I'm not sure what we'll do, but I'm sure of us. So sure that I'd marry you today.
Limestone is often very grumpy and commanding, but also protective of her sisters. Conversely, Marble is a pony of very few words, and her sisters often do the talking on her behalf.
"I'm not jealous! Who said anything about jealous?!"
"You see Mudbriar as a rock, but Maud sees him as a gem. Even if you never see past his dullness, you can see how happy he makes Maud. And to a sister, that's all that matters."
Marble, on the other hand, is depicted as very shy and soft-spoken, often letting Pinkie speak on her behalf. She doesn't say anything other than "Mm-hmm", a characteristic similar to the equally laconic Big McIntosh, with whom she forms a friendship.
"Well, you tell that to the rest of Equestria. We haven't had any business for months!"
The son of Feldspar Granite Pie and husband of Cloudy Quartz, Igneous Rock is the patriarch of the Rockville-branch of the Pie family. A simple, hard-working rock farmer, Igneous may not apear to be one on the surface, but is a loving and supportive father to his daughters.
We better harvest the rocks from the south field.
It's... the silliest idea I've ever heard in m' life! This is not something one of your parties can fix. Why can't you be serious for once, Pinkamena?
How did our little Pinkamena do all this? I've never seen so many ponies in my whole life! Cloudy Quartz: And they all came out to help us?
Cloudy Quartz, also known as Big Mama Q by Granny Smith is the matriarch of the Pie Family, mother of Maud Pie, Pinkie Pie, Limestone Pie and Marble Pie and wife of Igneous Rock.
We're so sorry, Pinkamena, dear. We didn't mean to hurt your feelins'. We've just been under so much stress about losin' the farm and, well... we didn't think you'd understand. You've always had such a sunny outlook on things!
Thou shalt know me as Cloudy Quartz.
Ever since that Crystal Empire showed up again, all anypony wants are stones that shine, sparkle, and shimmer! Plain old rocks are boring.
Maud is often depicted with a blank neutral facial expression, with her eyes half-closed and a dry demeanor that contrasts her more upbeat sister. She has a tendency to talk in a rather monotonous and dry tone of voice. She never smiles except for a few occasions while interacting with her closest friends such as Pinkie, Apple Bloom in Hearthbreakers, Starlight in Rock Solid Friendship and Student Counsel, and Mudbriar in The Maud Couple and Student Counsel.
"Boulder and I sometimes play a game called 'camouflage'. It's kind of like hide and seek but waaaaaaay more intense."
"I don't really like candy. But I do love Pinkie Pie."
"I know you did it out of love. You're my best sister friend forever."
Mr. and Mrs. Shy are the married Pegasus pony parents of Fluttershy and Zephyr Breeze who first appear in the season six episode Flutter Brutter.
I have my clouds, your mom has her flowers, you've got your animals, and your brother...
[to Zephyr Breeze] You know we love you, son, but your sister has a point.
Mr. and Mrs. Shy are the married Pegasus pony parents of Fluttershy and Zephyr Breeze who first appear in the season six episode Flutter Brutter.
Zephyr Breeze has his... interests. [nervous laugh]
[to Rainbow Dash] Thank you, dear, for not giving up on Zephyr. After all these years of pining for him, it must be so satisfying to see him on the right track.
A prideful dolt show off without anything to actually show off, Zephyr Breeze is a bit pathetic, dimwitted and whiny. Despite his self-absorbed demeanor, he's quite friendly and easy-going, though his high maintenance personality annoys even his loved ones.
"Guess who's home! That's right, big sis, it's your one and only favorite little brother, moi."
"To be fair, it was never made specifically clear to me what "guarding" actually means, so this is on you."
"The truth is such a gift. Like, I had to follow my bliss to see guarding is my calling. Like, look at me go. I'm gonna walk over here, and I go whoo! Over there! And I go, "Yeah!" and sometimes, I just stand like this and look real cool, and I go down the hallway and go, "Unh, unh, unh, unh, unh!"
Pinkie Pie works for Mr. and Mrs. Cake in their shop, and they show a good amount of patience for the party-loving pony, especially when she eats their merchandise or uses their shop floor as a party location. They love her as a daughter.
*Say something you think would fit*
Among the Young Six, Gallus is portrayed as sarcastic and rude, similar to most griffons. Like Smolder, he is resistant to the idea of friendship and openly ridicules others like Sandbar and Yona. After getting to know some of his fellow students, however, he acts more friendly and warm but maintains some level of nonchalance (and has a tendency to tease and play pranks on his friends).
"Rainbow Dash, right? Gilda told me about you. Huh. Thought you'd be... cooler."
"Hello, oh maaaaagical Equestrian tree! Can you tell me everything I need to know about friendship?"
"Playing together! Singing together! Even laughing together! That's what real heroes looks like!"
Among the Young Six, Silverstream is portrayed as incredibly hyperactive and bubbly, similar to Pinkie Pie and her cousin, Princess Skystar. Stated to have lived underwater for most of her life, she is very curious about the world around her and unfamiliar with creatures like changelings and griffons or social concepts like boredom and sarcasm. She is particularly fascinated by stairs, since there were none in her undersea home, and by indoor plumbing. It is revealed in What Lies Beneath that her biggest fear is the possibility of the Storm King's return.
"Ponies can turn into changelings?!"
"This is my favorite day of the year! [giggles] Not that I don't like the other ones. Tuesdays are great!"
"Uh, hey! Storm King! You're nothing but a big, old bully with a silly name and a goofy crown! You thought you could scare us into doing whatever you wanted! But we learned that together, we're stronger than you! And now that we're rid of you, we're gonna soar through the sky and go on adventures and never give you another thought ever!"
Among the Young Six, Smolder is portrayed as tough and competitive, similar to most dragons. Like Gallus, she is initially resistant to the idea of friendship, having been brought to the school against her will, and she gets particularly confrontational with Yona. After getting to know some of her fellow students, however, she opens up and becomes much friendlier overall. A promotional photo portrays her as somewhat of a class clown. Also, like other dragons, Smolder has an appetite for gems. It is revealed in What Lies Beneath that Smolder secretly likes cute things, like dresses, makeup, and tea parties.
"The dragons are better than this. Why am I here?"
"That was pretty amazing. Even by dragon standards."
"Garble saved our eggs because he was strong enough to be who he is, whether you liked it or not. I grew up thinking it was okay to make fun of differences. But my friends have taught me to celebrate them."
Among the Young Six, Yona is portrayed as very excitable and clumsy, initially frequently tripping over her own hair. Like most yaks, she speaks in broken English and in the third person. She harbors a lot of pride and love for her home of Yakyakistan, repeatedly proclaiming everything yak-related to be "best" and wanting to share that with the other creatures of Equestria. Her pride for her heritage at the expense of other creatures is somewhat conceited at first, but after getting to know some of her fellow students, her jabs at other creatures become more playful. In What Lies Beneath, it is revealed that Yona suffers from arachnophobia, a fear of spiders, but she overcomes it with the help of a spider named Spindle. In She's All Yak, Yona becomes self-conscious about fitting in among pony society, wanting to be the "best pony pal" for Sandbar.
"Yak can't wait to meet ponies! And tell all about Yakyakistan!"
"When Yona come to pony school, Yona not fit in. Pony ways strange. But Yona find friends! Yona meet Professor Rockhoof! Pony brave and strong as yak! Not afraid! Hero! When Yona grow up, Yona want to be just like Professor Rockhoof!"
"Sandbar mean something awful and embarrassing. So awful, Yona cannot come down from treehouse ever! [whirring] Will Sandbar bring Yona food and water?"
Among the Young Six, Sandbar is portrayed as the easygoing "straight man" to counterbalance his friends' more eccentric personalities. He is also the most considerate and thoughtful among them, demonstrated when he gives Gallus a replacement quill during the School of Friendship song, defends Yona's love for her heritage, and agrees to cut class with his schoolmates in order to keep them out of trouble.
"Whoa. Sorry about that. I'm Sandbar. Are you a student here, too?"
"You were right about them from the beginning, Chancellor. I see that now. [...] I don't want anything to do with creatures that could threaten Equestria!"
"Yona, it doesn't really matter if you're a great pony or a horrible pony. You're the best Yona I know. That's why I asked you to the dance."
Ocellus is initially portrayed as very shy, similarly to Fluttershy. As a way to avoid socializing with others and blend into the background, she commonly transforms into creatures around her. She grows past this after spending some time with her new friends. Ocellus is also the most academically inclined among her friends, being the only one to remember Twilight and Fluttershy's lessons. It is revealed in What Lies Beneath that she feels deeply ashamed of the changelings' dark past and fears that they might not be entirely past it. In Uprooted, Ocellus shows an interest in, and knowledge of, meditation. In 2, 4, 6, Greaaat, she is shown to struggle with performing in public.
"Our teachers are a little different than I expected."
"I would never do something this horrible! I love Hearth's Warming Eve! And I do not want to miss going home for it."
"They've taught us how powerful love and the Magic of Friendship truly is! We can't let them stand alone! We're their friends! They need us!"
Diamond Tiara is generally shown to be rude, shallow, stuck up, sarcastic, and nasty. Her closest (if not only) friend appears to be Silver Spoon, who often acts as a follower and is usually seen by her side. She sees those without their cutie marks as inferior and tauntingly refers to them as "blank flanks". Despite the Cutie Mark Crusaders often being the subject of her ridicule, she will try to "befriend" them if something is in it for her, as seen in Twilight Time. She also encourages their stories in Ponyville Confidential, but later resorts to blackmailing them when they try to resign.
"I don't know why we had to sit through a lecture about getting a cutie mark. I mean, waiting for your cutie mark is sooo last week."
"Alright, listen up. The Foal Free Press is a joke. Nopony at this school takes it seriously. Well I, the editor-in-chief in charge, am going to deliver us to new found glory!"
"These are the Cutie Mark Crusaders, and they are my friends! You need to stop calling them such mean and hurtful names! They are working harder to get their cutie marks than anypony I've ever seen! And they will get them exactly when they discover their true talent, which I guarantee will be amazing!"
Filthy Rich is a male Earth pony and Diamond Tiara's father. He is introduced in the season two episode Family Appreciation Day. He is called Berry Rich in some merchandise. His names are based on the phrases filthy rich and very rich, meaning "very wealthy".
"Excellent news, and as usual, I get your first hundred jars?"
"Unacceptable! We business ponies keep this town running! Perhaps we should find a different town in which to set up our various sporting goods shops!"
"Please! I'll pay you anything!"
Spoiled Rich (née Spoiled Milk) is a female Earth pony and Diamond Tiara's manipulative and overbearing mother. She is first mentioned indirectly by Babs Seed in One Bad Apple, and she makes her series debut in Crusaders of the Lost Mark.
"Diamond Tiara! Why are you making that face? That is not the face of a winner."
"Honestly, if you're looking for somepony to fund-raise, I can bring in enough bits to have several buildings named after me."
"My amazing husband-to-be is running the Rich family business now. Did you know that? Well, now you do."
Silver Spoon shares many similar traits with Diamond Tiara such as being snooty, stuck-up, and petty, often calling other ponies without cutie marks "blank flanks". However, she seems to be the follower, with Diamond Tiara being the leader. They share a special hoofshake and Silver Spoon appears to show some genuine concern for her feelings. At Diamond Tiara's cute-ceañera, Silver Spoon tries to cheer Diamond Tiara up, but Diamond Tiara ignores her. In Family Appreciation Day, she shows genuine interest in Granny Smith's story and is the first one to clap when it's finished, even after she and Diamond Tiara had denounced Granny Smith's odd behavior as something Apple Bloom should be ashamed of. In Crusaders of the Lost Mark, she reforms during Diamond Tiara's own change of heart.
"It's not like being the only pony there without a cutie mark would be, like, the most embarrassing thing ever."
"I tried to help by mentioning your 'surprise' statue, and suddenly, I wasn't even allowed to speak! You could have actually won this election if you just listened to me. You wanna know how? [whispering] Sorry. I'm not allowed to speak."
"Spinning a hoop around your waist? Puh-lease."
Twist is a school-age Earth pony with a noticeable speech impediment and a student of Cheerilee's class at Ponyville Schoolhouse. She was one of the few "blank flanks" in her class besides Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle until she received her cutie mark in Call of the Cutie: two candy canes in the shape of a heart. She is called Twist-a-loo and Peppermint Twist in some merchandise and other media.
"Let's see. I would like. Hmmmm, how about—no. Maybe I should..."
"Isn't my cutie mark swell? I've always loved making my own favorite sweets, but it took me some time to discover that it was my super-special talent. Pretty sweet, huh?"
"Or is it a powdered donut? 'Cause that sounds delicious."
Snips is a male school-age unicorn pony from Ponyville who is usually seen in the company of his friend Snails. He is called Snipsy Snap in some merchandise.
"...And on the count of three, this rabbit will disappear, and something tasty will reappear in its place."
"The Great and Powerful Trixie vanquished an ursa major. Can your Twilight claim that?"
"I miss the days when she was just a fraud!"
Snails is a male school-age unicorn pony who resides in Ponyville and is often seen with his friend Snips. He is called Snailsquirm in some merchandise.
"Why is it they call it a flea market when they don't really sell fleas?"
"You could do what I do and not think about it. Seriously. I don't think about anything. Ever."
"I second the motion, and might I add that if you looked up the word 'awesome' in the dictionary, there would be a picture of Rainbow Dash."
Pipsqueak, also called Pip Squeak or Pip, is a young male Earth pony from Trottingham who first appears in Luna Eclipsed. He later appears in various episodes and the IDW comics. He is called Pip Pinto Squeak in some merchandise.
"Our playground equipment took quite a beating during Twilight's battle with Tirek! If I'm voted in as student pony president, I'll go to the school board and right this wrong!"
"Whoa! You're my favorite princess ever! She said yes, guys!"
"I wanted a real Red Rider sword for my birthday, but mum said I'd put my eye out."
Featherweight is a school-age Pegasus colt and a friend of the Cutie Mark Crusaders who appears in various episodes. He has brown mane color, a short brown tail, and a cream coat. His cutie mark is a feather. The name "Featherweight" refers to his gaunt stature and slight build. It is also taken from one of the lighter weight classes in amateur and professional boxing.
"Uh, a baby pony, please! Uh, unless of course that would be a royal pain..."
"Uh, maybe you'd better just make me a giraffe."
"Extra, extra! Get your Ponyville news! Read it in the paper! Extra, extra!"
Rumble is a Pegasus colt who first appears in the season two episode Hurricane Fluttershy. He has a bluish gray coat, a two-tone dark gray mane and tail, and purple eyes. He is Thunderlane's younger brother.
"He's got the feather flu. He's down at Ponyville Hospital."
"I already know I'm a good flyer. It kinda runs in the family. I guess it's time to see what other stuff I can do."
"Actually, I don't need your help. Because I don't want to get my cutie mark!"
Zipporwhill is a Pegasus filly who first appears in the season four episode Filli Vanilli. She has a light yellow coat, an amber mane and tail, light green eyes, and a cutie mark of three paw prints.
"It's my puppy, Ripley. We used to be so close. In fact, I got my cutie mark the day I found him and took him home. But now, it's like he wants nothing to do with me."
"My new puppy and I thought it was super-duper crazy good!"
"This isn't who I am! My cutie mark must be for something else, because my puppy just doesn't love me anymore!"
Tender Taps is a male school-age Earth pony who first appears as a supporting character in the season six episode On Your Marks. He has an orange coat, two-tone purple mane and tail, purple eyes, and a cutie mark of a top hat and spotlight.
"You weren't that bad. You just need to learn a few things on your own. Being a soloist can be fun! [...] You just have to do it with feeling!"
"I don't know if you noticed, but that auditorium is full of other ponies! I can't go out there! What if I'm bad?!"
"I bet some day my cutie mark will even be about performing! But I could never dance in front of an audience the way I do in class. That's t-t-t-t-terrifying!"
Queen Chrysalis is a scheming, cruel, fierce, and manipulative individual whose primary concerns are gaining power and feeding her changeling subjects. Upon perceiving Twilight Sparkle as a potential threat to her plans, she turns her family and friends against her and enjoys mocking her both during and after Twilight's imprisonment in Canterlot's underground caves. While capable of mimicking Cadance well enough to fool most, she is unable to fool Twilight due to their close bond and her demanding and insincere behavior displayed in A Canterlot Wedding - Part 1.
"It's funny, really. Twilight here was suspicious of my behavior all along. Too bad the rest of you were too caught up in your wedding planning to realize those suspicions were correct!"
"One little pony all by herself. Oh, how will I ever prevent this daring rescue?"
"One day, you'll see! I will defeat Twilight Sparkle and her friends! And they will pay for stealing my kingdom!"
King Sombra is described by Princess Celestia as a unicorn whose heart is "black as night". In person, King Sombra is sadistic, fierce, and cruel to the point of addressing the Crystal Ponies as his "crystal slaves" and appearing to delight in their misery. Though untalkative, he is desperate to retake the Crystal Empire and relentless towards that end. He chases Shining Armor and the Mane Six during their first encounter, ultimately lays a curse on the former, and later races Spike in an attempt to regain the Crystal Heart.
"I don't do "ours". I only do mine. I will take back the Crystal Empire on my own, and I will destroy any pony who gets in my way!"
"You may have won the battle, but I shall win the war!"
"They've fled! Celestia and Luna are too cowardly to even stand against me! Equestria is mine!"
Throughout Rainbow Rocks, Adagio Dazzle is shown to be scheming, manipulative, and only concerned with being adored by others. Using her dark magic, she is able to sway the students' opinion with ease and trick Trixie into removing the Rainbooms from the competition. She also displays a degree of sadism, seen when taking advantage of Sunset Shimmer's insecurities, and a considerable level of intelligence, as she quickly recognizes the Rainbooms as a source of magic. Adagio bears contempt toward her fellow sirens Aria and Sonata, calling them "idiots" and generally disliking their company. As the leader she is shown to grow irritated when her authority is questioned.
"The energy in this world isn't the same as in Equestria. We can only gain so much power here."
"Oh, no! No one's mingling! It's like there's some kind of underlying tension that could bubble to the surface at any minute!"
"If the day's always the same, maybe you're the one who needs to change."
Aria Blaze is portrayed as being more level-headed than her companion Sonata Dusk and often speaks in a rather bored disposition. Throughout the film, she is shown to be just as cold and manipulative as her leader Adagio Dazzle, convincing Trixie into removing the Rainbooms from the competition and joining Adagio in undermining Sunset Shimmer's confidence. She would question Adagio's plans and thinks about being in charge when she suggested Sonata to follow her lead, much to Adagio's anger. Aria also frequently argues with Sonata, occasionally calling her "the worst" and disagreeing with her over trivial matters.
"So we're just gonna do what we always do? Stir up some trouble and then feed off the negative energy? Some plan, Adagio."
"By the way, if there's Equestrian magic afoot around here, we call dibs."
"But the Rainblossoms, or whatever they're called, aren't under our spell. How exactly are we supposed to get to their magic?"
The Storm King is portrayed as an evil and power-hungry tyrant. His demeanor unpredictably shifts between pleasant and cheerful, sardonic and petulant, and cold and ruthless. He displays a cruel and arrogant nature, turning his nose up at the notions of "cuteness" and "friendship", and he is quick to lose his temper when things don't go his way. Despite having been betrayed in the past by one of his own minions, the Storm King himself is deceitful and manipulative, making false promises to restore Tempest Shadow’s horn and then turning his power on her when she is no longer of any use to him.
"Here's the deal. I'm in the middle of a big re-brand here. "The Storm King" is tracking, well, as "intensely intimidating", but you know what? I need to back it up. You know what I need to back it up with? A storm! That would be great! You promised me magic that could control the elements, and right now, I'm holding a what? A branch. A twig. Bleh!"
"Now I truly am the Storm King! And the entire world will bow to my ba-ba-ba-boom, baby!"
"Get with the program! I used you! It's kind of what I do."
When first introduced, Cozy portrays herself as sweet, cute, innocent, and naive. As a student of the School of Friendship, she often displays a fear of failing class and being expelled. However, this is later revealed to be a front for Cozy's true nature as a schemer and manipulator. She worms her way into the lives of the Mane Six, Young Six, and Cutie Mark Crusaders, playing the role of an adorable, friendly filly and earning their trust, as part of her plan to take over the school and eventually all of Equestria.
"I'm Cozy Glow. It's very nice to meet you, but I don't know if I'll stay long. I'll probably flunk out. I'm having so much trouble with my friendship lessons."
"You get some rest. Don't give any of this another thought. Just let Cozy take care of everything."
"Psst, Tirek! I just wanna make sure you can see my best friends rock sculpture from over there!"
Grogar is a male ibex first alluded to in the season seven episode A Flurry of Emotions. He is a magically powerful tyrant who ruled and terrorized Equestria in ancient times. In the ninth and final season, Discord disguises himself as Grogar and forms an alliance of villains in a misguided effort to prepare Twilight Sparkle as Equestria's new ruler.
"I don't care how, but you must learn to work together! Only then can we accomplish what you so greatly desire – the defeat of Twilight Sparkle and her friends!"
"I'd say he gambled and lost! But at least he can serve as a warning to those who doubt continuing with my plans."
"I have been away too long if my name no longer strikes fear into the heart of one so tiny."
Gilda is first introduced by Rainbow Dash as her griffon friend, a "half-eagle, and half-lion", to which Gilda adds, "And all awesome." She is shown to be playful and competitive around Rainbow Dash, and she mentions she enjoys a good prank before setting out on several flying excursions with Dash. However, she is also very rude and has a short temper but hides that by acting friendly toward Dash. She shows her true colors when Pinkie Pie asks to join her and Dash and tries to discreetly ditch Pinkie by racing with Dash. This fails when Pinkie pursues them with the aid of balloons, prompting Gilda to pop Pinkie's balloons and send her floating down to the ground when Dash is preoccupied with a race. However, Pinkie manages to catch up to Gilda and Dash again; when Dash isn't looking, Gilda menaces Pinkie Pie, calling her a dweeb, a dork, and "Stinkie Pie", and sends Pinkie hurtling to the ground again. Pinkie describes Gilda to Twilight Sparkle as mean and grumpy, but Twilight thinks that Pinkie is just jealous of Gilda. Later, Gilda frightens Granny Smith by making her think her tail is a rattlesnake, steals an apple from a food cart, makes Fluttershy cry by bumping into her, doesn't accept Fluttershy's apology when Fluttershy thinks it was her fault, makes fun of the way she talks and roars at her. She then calls the ponies around her "lame".
"Don't you know how to take get lost for an answer? Dash doesn't need to hang with a dweeb like you now that I'm around."
"Well you, you, you are such a, a flip-flop: cool one minute and lame the next. When you decide not to be lame anymore, gimme a call."
"I'm just trying to say that if I were a princess like you— I wouldn't be listening to anypony's suggestions. I would do whatever I wanted! Make my kingdom all about Gilda!"
In The Return of Harmony Part 1 and Part 2, Discord is shown to be a mischievous and manipulative trickster who effortlessly pulls pranks on others through the use of his powerful magic, illusions, and hypnotism with little to no consideration towards his victims. He has a sense of showmanship and drama, preferring to be playful towards his victims before getting down to business, as seen when he mocks and banters with Celestia and the Mane Six in Canterlot Tower. He laughs and amuses himself with his magical chaos, mostly at the cost of others. Among other things Discord turns the ponies against each other, making Twilight Sparkle miserable and depressed, and generally causes ridiculous things to happen.
"I'm not playing fair? Perhaps we haven't met. I'm Discord, spirit of chaos and disharmony. Hello?"
"To retrieve your missing Elements, just make sense of this change of events. Twists and turns are my master plan. Then find the Elements back where you began."
"You're the pony who taught me that friendship is magic. I had magic and friendship, and now I don't have either."
Ahuizotl is typically portrayed with a very fearsome and maniacal demeanor. He is prone to greed and ferocity, shown in his repeated attempts to thwart Daring Do and his outburst at Dr. Caballeron when he reneges on their business deal. However, he is also prone to comical blunders, such as when Daring steals the Sapphire Statue during his moment of glory and when he falls victim to poison joke in Daring Do and the Eternal Flower.
"Oh, Daring Do, I will so miss your amusing laughter-jokes. Now I must leave to commence the ring-placing ceremony to unleash eight hundred years of unrelenting, sweltering heat!"
"You thought you could evade me and capture the relic for yourself, but you are sadly mistaken, Miss Do. And now, you shall meet your doom!"
"Daring Do, my old nemesis. You may have outsmarted my jungle cats, but you cannot escape me!"
Garble is portrayed as rude, arrogant, and brutish. He harbors a deep resentment and superiority complex toward ponies, and he frequently belittles and threatens Spike due to his relationship with ponies as well as his young age. He is also considerably malicious in some of his actions and thoughts, showing no concern for phoenix eggs and wishing to burn Equestria to the ground. Despite this, he is also somewhat dimwitted, easily outsmarted by Spike and his friends.
"Well, if you weren't just hatched, how come we haven't seen you around before?"
"Ha! Get this, guys! Spike's pen-pals with a namby-pamby pony princess!"
"When I'm in charge, the first thing I'll do is get revenge on those puny ponies! They'll regret they ever crossed Garble! We'll take whatever we want from Equestria and burn the rest!"
Throughout the first film, Sunset Shimmer is shown to be self-absorbed, condescending, manipulative, and dishonest. She frequently insults and belittles others and thinks little of it. According to human Fluttershy, Sunset makes life miserable for "anyone who stands in her way." As a result, most of the Canterlot High School student body is afraid of her. She is also not above making threats and blackmail in order to realize her goals.
"Sorry it had to be this way... princess!"
"Must be nice to have everyone always looking to you for answers to their problems... instead of waiting for you to cause a problem."
"True magic comes from honesty! Loyalty! Laughter! Generosity! Kindness! I understand you, Twilight, and I want to show you the most important magic of all... the magic of friendship!"
Dr. Caballeron is a male Earth pony who first appears as an antagonist in the season four episode Daring Don't. He also appears in the chapter book Daring Do and the Eternal Flower and the IDW comics. He is an enemy of Daring Do and a collaborator with fellow villain Ahuizotl.
"Many thanks, Daring Do. As you've probably surmised, our earlier search for this treasure was... unsuccessful. So kind of you to find it for us."
"If my previous plan didn't cause you to give up, Daring Do, then the shame of losing your dear friend Rainbow Dash to the slime will! Oh, and that ancient magic from the legend is real. There'll be no flying in the pyramid! Good luck, Daring Do!"
"It's a cerberus-eat-cerberus world out there, so you have to do everything you can to get ahead."
When initially introduced, Starlight Glimmer is openly friendly and welcoming, both toward the Mane Six and her followers. She is also somewhat of a disciplinarian, issuing punishment to those who do not conform to her philosophies. However, she later adopts a more callous and ill-tempered persona, desperate to keep up appearances and dismissing any concept of friendship that isn't the same as her own. She is also quite disrespectful, even to royalty, as shown when she furiously silences Twilight when she tries to explain how differences can make friendships stronger.
"Please enjoy our little corner of Equestria. We're all quite fond of it. No doubt you will be as well."
"In sameness, there is peace. Exceptionalism is a lie. Free yourself from your cutie mark. Choose equality as your special talent. Difference is frustration. To excel is to fail. Be your best by never being your best. Conformity will set you free. Accept your limitations, and happiness will follow. You're no better than your friend."
"I know there's no excuse for what I did, but I want you all to know that I'm ready for whatever punishment you think is fair."
When first introduced, Juniper is portrayed as very friendly and innocent. Like Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow Dash, she is a huge fan of A. K. Yearling, having met her once and gotten her to sign her copy of the latest Daring Do book. She also appears to be a big movie enthusiast, having worked on the sets for all of her uncle's movies and evidenced by her film reel-shaped hairpins. She shares her movie interest with Twinkleshine.
"I'm Juniper Montage, Canter the director's niece."
"If those girls hadn't shown up, I would have played Daring Do! Tonight would have been about me. I would have been a star!"
"This should be my night! I would have found a way to be in the film if you all had stayed out of it! I would have been Daring Do! Everyone would've loved me!"
Stygian, also known as the Pony of Shadows, is a male unicorn and the antagonist of the season seven finale Shadow Play. He is a battle strategist and friend of the Pillars of Old Equestria who turned into an evil pony of darkness. His alter ego is first mentioned in Castle Mane-ia and depicted in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issue #53.
"You summon me at your peril, Star Swirl! Once I defeat all of you, this realm will embrace the darkness as I did so long ago!"
"The darkness welcomed me when no pony would, and I will do what I must to protect it!"
"This is a tale of the heroes of Equestria. However, there is one very important thing to remember about me. I am not a hero."
Tempest Shadow is portrayed in the film and subsequent material as cold, merciless, and spiteful as a result of losing her horn. She cares little for the idea of friendship, feeling it had "betrayed" her long ago, and that it is a childish concept which doesn't work in the world she knows.
"Oh, I'm so glad you asked. How about we start with your complete and total surrender?"
"I saw the truth. My "friends" abandoned me when times got tough. Looks like I'm not the only one. Face it, princess. Friendship has failed you, too."
"I lost what I defined myself to be... Then I lost those who stood by me... And now, I'm simply... lost. I feel as though there is almost nothing left of me. Out here, I'll either lose myself completely... or find something new to be."
Described as "bumbling" and "a good guy put in a bad situation", Grubber is a loudmouthed wise-cracker, providing comedic banter to many of Tempest Shadow's scenes. He usually acts tough and tries to match Tempest's level of wickedness, but this is counterbalanced by his inherent cowardice and laziness.
"Ponies of Equestria, we come on behalf of the fearsome, the powerful, the almighty... Storm King! And now, to deliver the evil, evil message, put your hooves together for Commander Tempest!"
"Oh, you're gonna go in the skiff! Which is a boat! Specifically, a air-boat!"
"Mmmm! That's some, like, gourmet icing! ...Who puts eyeballs in filling?"
Wallflower Blush is a quiet and introverted girl who is typically ignored and quickly forgotten by the rest of the student body, instilling her with a feeling of complete invisibility. She is initially resentful toward Sunset Shimmer for both being so popular and constantly ignoring her presence, but her demeanor slowly changes from bitter to remorseful during Forgotten Friendship's climax. Wallflower also has a passion for gardening, which led to her founding the school's Gardening Club.
"I've been trying to get your attention for, like, half the song."
"Oh. That's my garden. Well, the school's garden, technically. I'm the president of the Gardening Club. I founded it, too. I'm also the only member. And the only one who's ever been to the garden. Or seen it. Or even asked about it."
"Oh, I was still in here. But that's okay. I'm used to it."
