Majora's Mask- A novelisation by FakeJake93- Audiobook [1st Casting Call]
Project Overview
To celebrate Zelda's 35th anniversary I would like to complete this audiobook of a novelisation based on the game. The book itself is a novelisation of Majora's Mask by FakeJake93. Fans of the story will know that it in terms of size, it is quite an epic, so be aware this is no small project.
Payment for voice work will depend on how much I'm getting from Patreon. It won't be a lot, just a thank you. In previous projects, I've aimed for $10 per hour of the final recording (not including editing).
How it will work...
Each chapter will be uploaded to my YouTube Account- DragonRand100 audiobooks and my podcast.
If your audition is selected, you will be sent an invite to the project's Discord channel.
Note: Given the size of this story, cast members auditioning for the role of Link will have the option of choosing how many chapters they want to do. Once you complete the number of chapters you'd like to do, I will put up a second casting call, or if you really want, you can continue. This will mean keeping your pronunciation of any bizarre Hylian and Terminian names consistent with any other voice actors that have participated in this series.
Characters to be featured in later Casting Calls:
To avoid making anyone wait while I get to their part, these characters will be included in a future Casting Call.
- Tael
- Happy Mask Salesman
- Anju
- Skull Kid
- Tatl
- King of Hyrule (flashback)
- Malon (flashback)
- Navi (flashback)
- Deku Butler
Cast members will be required to narrate their character's scenes, so when you audition, make sure you read the entire excerpt, not just the dialogue. For the best effect, you should try to make each character sound a little distinct from the other, and your reading voice should also be different. I will also be looking to see how well you convey emotion and tension in your recording.
If you want to see what I'm looking for in auditions you can check out my YouTube channel DragonRand100 Audiobooks, you'll find a link to it below.
Rules
1. Use a clear voice, varying your pitch and tone according to what is happening in the story.
2. Ensure that pets and other distractions are not going to interfere with the recording.
3. Avoid mouth noises i.e. clicks or anything that sounds like your chewing gum. I've seen it in professionally made audiobooks- thanks, Audible- and it's the worst.
5. Use a decent mic. I hate to be strict on this one, but I also hate having to reject people because there are loud popping and crackling noises in their recording or the speaker is inaudible, so please avoid this.
6. Edit out any mistakes and edit any major issues with your audio. It's a tedious process, I know. The odd mistake is okay, but the more you can edit these out the better. I find the easiest way to deal with these is to stop the recording when you make a mistake, cut the last bit of audio to remove the error, and then redo that bit of the recording. It's tedious, I know, but it makes for a better recording. I won't accept recordings with lots of repeats. I have in the past, but it's much harder for me to edit your work, and that just ends up with some very irate reviewers.
7. Please meet your deadlines: Generally, I try to give VAs 4 weeks to submit their scenes. If I do not receive your narration after a month, and you have not responded to my attempts to contact you, I will re-open the role for auditions. e.
I have been really lenient with deadlines in the past, but this has led to the project stalling. Please get your recordings in by the deadline. If you are unable to, send me what you've done so far. If it's a reasonable length, I will at least be able to see you're trying to get it done, and I will happily extend the deadline. Screenshots of your audio editor will not be accepted.
8. Not so much a rule, but just a recommendation. If your profile is complete, I will be more likely to cast you, as I will be checking them out when selecting people.
9. The most important rule of all- Have fun! This is meant to be a bit of fun and at the very least a bit of practise for any budding VAs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the final project?
- The story is 81 chapters long. I don't expect anyone to sign up for all the chapters, as much as that would be awesome, so please let me know how many you want to sign on for, so I can either set up the next casting call or select another audition to do the next few chapters after yours.
- Other minor characters will require 15-30 minutes of recording time. Additional casting calls will be added for these due to the size of the project.
Is it multiple episodes/chapters?
Multiple chapters.
How fast do you require actors turnaround time to be?
At least one chapter every 2-4 weeks, or sooner if possible.
When will I know if my audition is accepted?
You will know by the deadline, or within a few days of the deadline (see the project details). I will also send you a link to the project's Discord server.
How the heck do I pronounce that character's name?
If you're having trouble, tell me what names you're stuck on, and I will send you an audio recording of the names via Discord. I will also pin them to the thread, so they're easy to find.
Submission (for cast members)
1. Upload will be via drop-box or file sharing to dragonrand100(at)gmail(dot)com or SoundCloud (if you use it). Let me know when you send it, as this isn't my primary e-mail account, so I don't always check it. You can also send it using CCC, but I'm not sure if there's a limit on the recording length.

About me
I am 27 years old, from NSW, Australia. I'm new to voice acting in drama, but I enjoy doing it, and am looking to develop my voice acting skills.
I enjoy Biology, most things related to animal husbandry (I stress most), travelling abroad, photography, reading (mainly sci-fi and fantasy), learning about other cultures and video games. I also enjoy writing, when my muse allows it and I'm not busy with the dreaded writer's block or life does not redirect my attention elsewhere which it has an uncanny ability to do.
I liked the earlier books of Game of Thrones- not so keen on book four or five.
Favourite shows: Game of Thrones (until season 4), Star Trek (DS9, TNG, VOY), Stargate (SG1, Atlantis) & the 10th Kingdom.
Favourite video games: Deus Ex, Elder Scrolls, Eternal Darkness, Fable, Mass Effect & Legend of Zelda.
Can't participate in a project, but would love to contribute?

Thank you everyone for your wonderful auditions. It's been a pleasure to listen to them, and I'm left with a very difficult decision on the final cast. I will be getting the co-director and the author of this work to lend a hand in deciding on the casting. If your audition was shortlisted I will PM you to see if you would like to tag along as an understudy, and I'll add you to the Discord server. That would mean that if the main VA for Link (or another character) is unavailable, due to the many reasons life can throw at us, you will be asked to step in (sometimes just for a few chapters). Further casting calls will also be announced for the other point of view characters once I reach their parts, so keep an eye out for those. Lastly, my apologies for the delay in selecting the final cast, we've had flooding here recently and I've been dealing with that for the past week. Take care, ~ DragonRand100

Deadline moved to Friday
The deadline has been pushed back to Friday. Unfortunately I can’t extend it past this, as I’ll have less time to set everything up before I go back to work.
This is the point of view character for most of the chapters of the story. You will be narrating everything in Link’s scenes, including other characters’ dialogue.
Excerpts have been taken from the first 6 chapters.
Please specify in your audition how many chapters you're willing to do. If you're willing to tag along as an understudy, if you're audition is shortlisted, then I'll add you to the Discord server. You don't have to do both scenes unless you're really keen.
I know they're long, but that's to give you an idea of what's expected.
"You are already leaving this land of Hyrule, aren't you?"
The boy found it hard to meet her eyes. I'm not answering that, he thought. I don't know what she expects me to say.
The two of them stood outside of the great, stone wall that surrounded the castle's bustling marketplace, on the drawbridge that connected it to the seemingly endless, rolling hills of Hyrule Field. The sun hid behind the gloom of the cloudy midday, and the soft wind gently danced through the air. Zelda's summer dress hardly stirred.
He looked to his horse. The small, young steed, her brown coat and short white mane blowing in the gentle breeze, stood beside him patiently. He fiddled with the green fabric of his tunic. What is she hoping for? That I'll change my mind?
"Even though it was only a short time, I feel like I've known you forever," Zelda continued. He restrained himself from reminding her that they had known each other for much longer, in a future she would never know existed. He was renowned as the Hero of Time; he'd traveled forward seven years to vanquish a great evil, sealing it away across all ages.
That peaceful period following his return to the present had just ended. Now he was on a personal quest, to find a lost friend. His sword and shield were once again clad on his back, ready to protect himself from danger.
"I'll never forget the days we spent together in Hyrule, Link," Zelda added. "And I believe in my heart that a day will come when we'll meet again. Until that day comes, please, take this." Link watched Zelda outstretch her hand, palm up, to show a deep-sea blue ocarina resting there.
"I... I can't...," started Link.
"I am praying... I am praying that your journey be a safe one," she interrupted.
"I can't take that from you," persisted Link, pushing her hand back against her chest. "It's the Royal Family's. It's yours. It can't help me anymore."
"But it will. I believe that it's been kept in our family this long so that one day, it would find its way to you. Please, take it. If something should happen to you, it might come to your aid again."
He took the Ocarina of Time back into his hands; he'd sealed the wicked sorcerer away through its power. "Do you remember the Song of Time?" she asked. "The Goddess of Time helped you last time you were in trouble."
"Yes," answered Link grimly, slipping the ocarina into its usual pocket on his belt. There was a long moment of silence, and both of them merely stood together in it. Then, Link gave Zelda a small, weak smile, and turned to his horse. "Come on, Epona."
He led the young horse by the reins away from the princess... Hyrule... the ranch... home for the two of them. The horse looked back and forth between the two youths, confused at the moment of silence that prevailed. Link and Epona had only gone a few steps when Zelda broke it.
"Link," she called out once more.
Link stopped short, wondering if he should even turn around; it would be less painful if he kept walking.
He found the urge irresistible.
Zelda, at a loss for words, quickly found them. "Please don't forget me. Don't forget Hyrule. You'll come back, won't you?"
Link didn't answer at first. "I promise." And then he threw himself over Epona's back, and the two rode off toward the mountains, leaving Zelda behind on the drawbridge.
What's with that stupid horse of yours?" asked the Skull Kid, losing his playful tone of voice. The words were now icy and sharp. "It doesn't listen to a word that's said to it. There's no point in riding a thing like that, so I did you a favor and got rid of it." He chuckled, acting like he was stifling uncontrollable laughter.
Link couldn't believe his ears. Epona? Dead? "You...," began Link, but he couldn't find the words. Suddenly, all of his fear turned to anger, and his hand firmly gripped the handle of his sword.
His face must have expressed this, because the imp laughed again. "Aww, boo-hoo. Why the sad face? I just thought I'd have a little fun with you."
"A little fun?" exclaimed Link angrily, holding his sword up and pointing its tip at the imp. He stood firmly on the flower in the middle of the puddle, but was ready to fight. "You killed Epona!"
"Killed-?" inquired the Skull Kid, arms still folded, floating comfortably on some invisible bed. "I never said that."
"You got rid of her!" said Link. "She was the last person I had from home, and you took her from me!"
The Skull Kid laughed, though the two fairies merely floated beside him silently. "It's just a stupid horse!" he exclaimed.
"Shut up!" Link yelled, cutting his sword across the empty air threateningly.
Instantly, the imp froze. All traces of humor were gone. "Oh, come now. Do you really think you can beat me as I am now? Fool!"
Link's first instinct was to move forward, but the Skull Kid reacted first. His head began trembling rapidly, his mask sizzling with a vibrant spectrum of colors. The blues, yellows, purples, and greens worked their way towards him, as the magic of the Skull Kid filled the air.
The air surrounding Link grew heavy as the spell's grip tightened, and he quickly realized that he was suffocating. He thrust his head upward to gasp for air, but then everything was black.
He stood there, in some vast empty space, until he heard a shaking of many coarse leaves bristling against each other, swaying. He recognized the sound instantly: Deku scrubs. Link ran from the noise, but suddenly it was everywhere, everything. The little wooden creatures were covered in large, red leaves that cascaded from the top of their heads to their mid-sections. They were child-sized and stick-like atop two twiggy legs, and had long wooden snouts below their glowing orange eyes. They were a head shorter than Link, but there was now an army of Deku scrubs. He stood no chance against them.
Link sprinted away, until they closed him off, surrounding him with the rustling of their leaves. He covered his ears and closed his eyes, but he was unable to end the madness. He let out a loud scream... and then it stopped.
The Skull Kid was there again, still levitating luxuriously with his arms across his chest and the two fairies floating by his side. Link was unable to read their expressions. He went to take a step forward, but when he did, he felt... his hands. His sword and shield were no longer there, but that wasn't the problem. His hands were made of wood.
He held them up in front of his eyes, completely shocked, noticing that his whole arm was made out of this material. His fingers and elbow weren't stiff, though; it was a moist, organic wood more similar to the trunk of a sapling than a full grown tree. Link looked past his hands to see that his torso also bore the same texture, bare of any shirt; his tunic was gone. All that remained was a green pair of shorts made out of the same material his tunic had been. His legs and feet were just as wooden as the rest of his body. Link hesitantly peered over the petals of the flower into the pond's reflection.
He screamed a high-pitched wail. It sounded like it belonged to a young, defenseless animal, which was true. The Skull Kid's spell had turned him into a Deku scrub.
