LIFE SUCKS - Audio Comic

LIFE SUCKS - Audio Comic

Project Overview

"Life Sucks" is a 2008 one-off graphic novel written by Jessica Abel, Gabe Soria, and illustrated by Warren Pleece. It's a fantastic story with comedy, romance and action that takes jabs at the stereotypes and romanticizing of vampire life. I hardly even want to give away the plot in this description, because within the first few pages alone is a great twist.

This will be my directing debut. I have been voice acting for multiple projects and am now wanting to step up with something that I think has a lot of potential and really needs more recognition. I already have a lot of members casted in this comic, friends and co-workers from other productions, but I am primarily needing someone to play our female lead Rosa. If other roles do come up, I will be sure to update this post as we go along.

My main rule I have for the moment is preferably NO USB MICROPHONES. Please understand that I have graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Music and Entertainment, and while I am understanding how USB mics can be affordable and mild to moderate in quality, in the professional business there is never a USB mic to be seen. I'm willing to listen to whatever you have, but I want this to be as professional sounding as possible for my first time directing. Just for reference, I use a CAD D89 microphone, not an expensive microphone by any means, but it is a traditional XLR cable mic with decent quality for the price.

Latest Updates

  • Creator Approval

A quick update message I'm sending to everyone involved with the project. We are not stopping, but waiting for just a little while to start it. I've been back and forthing with the original author, Jessica Abel, about getting permission to do the project. For the most part she has said yes, I had even sent her a rough recording demo that she enjoyed, but she has said to wait on starting fully until we get approval from her agent because of how this could affect her copyright. This shouldn't be much of a problem since the book came out in 2008 but has been out of print since 2010. So I suppose we'll be on standby for now, but rest assured I want this to happen. I have almost all my notes complete and am going to get everyone together once we are given the go-ahead. In regards to our Rosa, I think my decision has been made, but I will also choose a second actress to play Rosa's mother. I appreciate each of you for auditioning, and I do not want you to be discouraged by me not choosing you. This is my first time controlling a project like this, so please don't let this hold you from pursuing other voice acting options.

Rosa is the female lead of the story, and romantic interest of protagonist Dave Miller. She is a Latina Goth, who works in a Gothic apparel store, and creates her own fashion pieces. An accent is not entirely necessary, as she primarily speaks English, but she is bilingual in English and Spanish, so I would prefer that the voice actress is also bilingual, this helps not just with authenticity of character, but with ethnic variety, and is more inclusive for audience. I have posted motivation and pages of the comic for reference with your lines. Use the link above to read the comic, as well as gauge facial expressions and emotion.

  • (MOTIVATION: Casual and friendly, p.71)
"Oh, Dave, by the way, I meant to ask, are you working tomorrow night? Because there's a fashion show at Dirge. I've got a piece in the show and I'd love it if you come. And bring Jerome and Carl, of course."

  • (MOTIVATION: Hurt, after having her heart broken, p.136)
"You know what would be awesome? If I could be a vampire... I'm serious. That would fix everything. No, I mean it. Don't you think it's possible they're out there, really? There wouldn't be so much lore if they didn't exist."

  • (MOTIVATION: Annoyed, her prying mother asking questions. This line is in Spanish, p. 118)
ENGLISH: None of your business, but it's my friend Dave. You can't keep me from seeing whoever I want!
SPANISH: No es asunto tuyo, pero es mi amigo Dave. No puedes impedirme que vea a quien quiero.
