Kaladesh - Torch of Defiance

Project Overview

As Wizards of the Coast continues to release their weekly Magic Story updates, it is our goal on the Voice of All podcast to bring these stories to life through audio.

We are now arriving on the all new plane of Kaladesh, a South Asia inspired steam-punk paradise! With a new world, we have all sorts of new roles to fill, including an old villain! You can check out this week's story here:

Tezzeret

Role assigned to: tarfari

A villainous planeswalker who has not been seen in many years. Apparently he is now the Head Judge of the Inventors Fair on Kaladesh. Here is his biography from Wizards:

Tezzeret seeks perfection of body and mind. He specializes in blue artifice magic: spells that forge and manipulate artifacts, sometimes even bringing them to life.
A talented artificer from the Alara shard of Esper, his body is enhanced with the magical alloy etherium, a practice common among Esperites.
Tezzeret became an initiate of a mage sect called the Seekers of Carmot, hoping to gain access to the sacred Codex Etherium tome. When he intruded into the sanctum of the Seekers, however, he uncovered truths others didn't want him to find … and a conspiracy much larger than himself.
Mortally wounded by the guards, Tezzeret's spark ignited, hurling his battered body between the planes to Grixis, where he laid dying. Revived by the scheming elder dragon Nicol Bolas, Tezzeret was forced into servitude in exchange for his life.
Tezzeret then went on to seize control of the cabal known as the Infinite Consortium (or at least Bolas allowed him to think he had). On the plane of Ravnica, from which Tezzeret led the Consortium, he recruited fellow Planeswalker Jace Beleren, hoping to use him as a powerful pawn. But Jace had other ideas and defeated Tezzeret in combat, erasing his mind almost completely. Bolas retrieved Tezzeret’s body, rebuilding it for a sinister new task.
Later, the elder dragon sent him to the plane of Mirrodin to observe the growth of New Phyrexia and report on its progress. Tezzeret, using his inherent guile and wit, established himself within the Phyrexian hierarchy. As always, he watches for an opportunity to gain power and turn the situation to his advantage.

This is a recurring character. Should you be chosen for this role you will be asked to reprise it later.

  • "I've found you at last, Renegade Prime. Do you think your little spectacle is going to matter to my Fair?"

  • "I'm looking for an associate. Hoping you might know where her little demonstration is planned for tomorrow."

  • "She said not to use names. I'm just supposed to meet her. You haven't heard about this?"

Role assigned to: tomhickey

The conductor of a train Chandra and Liliana are taking a ride on, making an announcement through the intercom. This is their only line.

  • "This train is making an unscheduled stop. Please remain in your seats until instructed by an Aradara conductor or Consulate official. Thank you."

Dwarf Rebel

Role assigned to: mollykay

A dwarven rebel and artificer whom Tezzeret meets in his search for Pia. She is cagey about sharing information, as one might expect.

  • "I'm afraid we're drained tonight, friend."

  • "Lot of demonstrations going on. You got a name?"

  • "Don't know who or what you're talking about."

Role assigned to: corybantic

A vedalken soldier of the Consulate at a night club where Chandra and Liliana are hanging out. Liliana goads him into attempting to arrest them.

  • And even if I did know about threats to the Fair, what business would it be of yours, madam? If you've witnessed something, it's your duty to report it."

  • "You two. You're going to come with me."

  • "That's them!"

Role assigned to: ajbailey

Chandra’s mother. An inventor, ingenious artisan, and now the leader of the rebel movement. When Chandra was young, they were aether smugglers. The Consulate sought to kill Chandra for her growing skill in pyromancy. In the end her father was killed, Pia presumed dead, and Chandra only alive through the ignition of planeswalker spark. Not that anyone on Kaladesh would know that last part.

Today's first line is her only line in this story and should be read as hard-edged and determined. The second and third lines are from Chandra's origin story and should be much gentler.

This is a recurring character. Should you be chosen for this role you will be asked to reprise it later.

  • "We'll stop you, Head Judge. If not today, one day soon."

  • “Her inaugural solo delivery! Oh, just look at her, Kiran! She’s going to burst. Here, daughter, come and help me seal this before the shipment explodes—or you do.”

  • “Your fire. It’s a form of magic. A special kind. But it’s something that intimidates them. If it’s something you can do without machines, without the need for Æther…you do it your own way, you see? And they hate that.”
