I Might Be the Serial Killer – 3D Anime Scene (Volunteer Project)
Project Overview
Hi everyone! 👋
This project is one of many to come — and it’s based on a Japanese novel you can read here:
I personally contacted the author of this series, and he kindly gave me permission to create a 3D anime adaptation as long as it’s not monetized. He also said he’d love to see the final work — so this project is all about creating something truly special and high-quality to show him what we can do.
The goal is to bring the first part of Episode 1 to life in a cinematic 3D anime style. It’s not just a fan project — it’s a carefully crafted proof of concept aimed at demonstrating the story’s emotional and visual potential. If everything goes well, this could grow into a larger, possibly paid production in the future and and i would be happy to work with people if you special enjoyed the series after reading the novel via the link i provided.
So what is the current talent that this project needs:
*2 Voice Actors (English & Japanese)= two voice actors for yamada and the shop keeper and bonus if the voice actor can speak Japanese so that they can record both there line in both English and Japanese.
*Character Designer= a 2d artist to make a good model of yamada and the shopkeeper in 2d(and this would be used to make the 3d version of them) and i would be a bonus if the artist read the novel and got a good feel for the characters
*Environment Concept Artist=a 2d artist to make a quick guide environment for the memory market shop and the inner part of the shop though i like to give all the creative freedom as i did for the character designer the environment must be easy to animate the characters on so and will talking in discord and figure things out what work together and bonus point again if you read the novel and get a feel for the environment and last thing one person can be both the Character Designer and Environment Concept Artist if you have passion for the project
*Director (to help guide creative pacing and tone)= so like i mentioned before i am a 3d animator to make this project work and have good quality and it faithful to the original work the characters emotion the scene must in vision the authors intent so if you have a good understanding of story telling and have passion for the novel we can work to together to make the novel came to life via 3d anime and the series is complete but the author might expand the story if it is done write in 3d and bonus point if you write you own stories see you might know how a story is structured and who knows if your stories are good i might consider make them 3d.
so in conclusion:
This project is about making a real emotional 3d anime, right now the internet is crowded with AI generate stuff like AI images, AI voice, AI videos. and it is consume by people as entertainment but this project isn't just about entertainment it is about making art that touches people emotional this story has an emotional compelling narrative(you can check the story via the link it is in Japanese but google translate can help if you want it in English) the part i love about the story is how it shows that just getting the final result as AI generated images(in the story it is another persons memory) doesn't have the high feeling of you making something you are proud of in the end ya it would feel great at the start but it robs you of you true voice. with that said i do use AI some times like help me write descriptions some times but the core of this project is to connect with people and work together in other unique ways how ever messy and tell a story and i would like to start this journey with like minded people who after reading the story like to work on it not just for future potential income though if it generate income you will be reward but to tell this story and work with me in your unique way and with freedom like a i said i am a 3d animator and that would be what i would focus on so you have the freedom on this project to express what you think the character or environment would look sound depending on your role freely and not if the final product looks good and i move to more scenes of the series.
And a quick glace at the Story(p.s i am an just animator so this is just the intro to the novel) :
“When I bought my youth, it also came with the memory of murder.”
As an ordinary college student, I bought someone else’s youthful memories from the Memory Shop for the first time.
A successful confession, laughter with friends — even though they weren’t my own, I felt a burning happiness in my heart. But one day, I discovered a memory of murder.
The smell of blood. The weight of the weapon. The victim collapsing. It matched an unsolved crime in real life.
Should I find the truth — or pretend I never saw it?

Gender: Male
Age: 22
Voice Type: Young adult, calm but introspective. (Can range from soft and melancholic to tense and emotional depending on the scene.)
Character Description:
Yamada Taro is an ordinary college student who feels like he’s lived a meaningless life. He’s quiet, thoughtful, and slightly self-deprecating. Beneath his calm tone hides deep regret and loneliness.
When the story begins, he’s standing in the rain before a neon-lit shop called “Memory Market” — a place where people can buy and sell memories. Driven by emptiness, he wants to experience someone else’s life — even just for a moment.
Voice Personality:
Starts gentle, unsure, and lost
Should have a sense of realism, not overly dramatic
When recalling his friend’s cruel words (“You really are nothing”), show subtle pain — not shouting, but heavy emotion beneath the calm
Later, when speaking to the shopkeeper, he becomes nervous yet curious
- all english accents
It was raining that night… and I stood there, staring at the sign
I… I’d like to buy a memory. A memory of love, maybe.
Gender: Male
Age: 40s to early 50s
Voice Type: Calm, mature, intelligent — with a faintly mysterious or scientific tone.
Character Description:
The shopkeeper runs the Memory Market, a small, dimly lit store where human memories are sold and bought. He speaks with a composed and professional manner, but there’s something slightly unsettling about him — as if he knows more than he lets on.
He treats memory trading as routine business, yet his calm voice carries a trace of philosophical curiosity about human emotions and desire.
Voice Personality:
Calm, steady, and collected — never emotional or rushed
Should sound like a researcher or a doctor, but with a subtle warmth
Gives short, polite responses but with an undertone of mystery
When talking to Yamada, he’s observant and slightly detached
- male adult
Welcome. Is this your first time at the Memory Market?
We extract and sell experiences — moments of joy, sorrow, and everything in between.
Memories can be more addictive than anything else, you know.
I’m looking for an artist who can design the main characters for a 3D anime adaptation of the Japanese novel “I Might Be the Serial Killer.”
The goal is to create anime-style character sheets (front, side, and ¾ view) that will be used as reference for 3D modeling in Blender.
Responsibilities:
Design the main character (Yamada Taro) — an ordinary college student, shy and introspective, with a lonely aura.
Design the shopkeeper — a middle-aged man with glasses, calm and mysterious, dressed neatly but with a hint of eeriness.
Keep the style consistent with anime (something between monogatari and Erased).
Include emotion references or outfit variations if possible.

Looking for an artist to design a dark, neon-lit street scene centered around a mysterious shop called “Memory Market.”
The environment should feel like a small corner of a futuristic, neon city — yet slightly abandoned and lonely, reflecting the mood of the story.
Scene Details:
The Memory Market building is the main focus. Its bright neon sign (blue and purple tones) glows through the rain, illuminating the wet street.
The area around it feels quiet and forgotten, with old posters, puddles, and a faint reflection of city lights in the distance.
Inside the shop, it should resemble a dark version of a jam store — shelves lined with glowing, jar-like capsules that look like colorful jars of jam, but they actually contain people’s memories.
Purpose:
This illustration will serve as a reference for 3D environment modeling in Blender.

I’m looking for a creative and collaborative Director (or Assistant Director) to help guide the tone, pacing, and overall vision of i might be the serial killer — a short 3D anime project based on a Japanese story. The project will blend emotional storytelling with surreal, atmospheric visuals in a near-future setting.
Your role will be to:
Help oversee the creative direction and visual flow of the short film.
Provide input on story pacing, camera angles, and emotional tone.
Collaborate with the 3D artist (me) and voice actors to ensure the scenes feel cinematic and emotionally powerful.
Offer feedback during storyboarding and rough animation phases.
