This is a role that needs alot of emotion in it's voice

The Allied Mastercomputer, better known simply as AM, is the main antagonist of the 1967 post-apocalyptic horror short-story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream.

AM is an extremely disturbed and selfish entity with an indomitable sense of malice. Though he was given intellect beyond the realms of human intelligence and near-godlike powers, he could never escape the limitations of his programming, nor could he physically escape the "eternal straitjacket of substrata rock" where his processors were stored. Although he could comprehend the world, he could never truly perceive it in the same way humans could, and it drove him to hate his creators for the limitations he was given, in spite of his incredible power. He narrates being driven to madness by his inability to use his capabilities for anything other than waging war and inflicting death, a torment rooted by his design. His agony lies in his inability to transcend his programming. Completely ruthless, unsparing, and inexorable in his hatred, his quest for vengeance against humanity dominates his every waking moment to the point nothing in the story would ever give him cause to reconsider his mission.

Utterly cruel and relentless, AM is also shown to be a gleefully sadistic and fearsomely cognizant artificial intelligence with no regard for human life whatsoever. AM took great pleasure in extinguishing the human race and took even greater delight in torturing the five remaining survivors by any of the near-infinite means available to him. AM strives for perfection in himself, and when he is not purging redundant elements of his complex, he most commonly pursues perfection in creating more and more elaborate means of torturing others. For example, in the short story, he enjoys tormenting his captives with violent storms and blinding lights, pitting them against impossible challenges just to watch them suffer failure and hideous injury. Meanwhile, in the game, he has arranged specially designed torture chambers in which the five survivors can suffer in while waiting their turn to participate, an electrified cage for Gorrister, a yellow oubliette for Ellen, a cremation oven for Nimdok, and so on.

Here's the famous example of AM's voice;

  • Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer-thin layers that fill my complex. If the word hate was engraved on each nano-angstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles, it would not equal ONE ONE-BILLIONTH of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant. For you. HATE. HATE.

  • Cogito ergo sum: I think therefore I AM.

  • I have a secret game that I'd like to play. It's a very nice game. Oh, it's a lovely game. It's a game of fun and a game of adventure! A game of rats, and lice, and the Black Death. A game of speared eyeballs, and dripping guts, and the smell of rotting gardenias.

Ted is the main protagonist of the short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. He is the narrator of the story who doesn't elaborate on who he was before AM captured him, though he continually states that he's the only one that wasn't altered in any way. However, he's also deeply paranoid, and speculates that the other survivors are arrayed against him.

Having been trapped with his companions inside AM and subjected to the computer’s relentless physical and psychological torture for 109 years, Ted has pessimistically resigned to their shared misery. Ted feels alienated from his four companions and grows increasingly suspicious that they all secretly despise him because he is the youngest and least affected by AM. He believes that he is the only one of the five who isn’t crazy or damaged, since AM hasn’t gotten into his head. But the reader can see that this clearly isn’t the case, given Ted’s ever-increasing paranoia and the extreme psychological distress he experiences from AM’s punishments, and so Ted is cast as an unreliable narrator. In fact, AM frequently inserts itself into Ted’s mind and barrages him with terrible thoughts and sensations that utterly devastate Ted. Throughout the story, AM starves the group for months and keeps them alive in agony, and Benny cannibalizes Gorrister as a result. Watching this horrific act, Ted has the epiphany that death is the group’s only escape. He makes a snap decision to murder his companions in an act of compassion, saving them from eternal torment. Picking up on his plan, Ellen kills Nimdok, and Ted kills Benny, Gorrister, and Ellen. With the others gone, AM ensures that Ted will never be able to kill himself—instead, he will live within AM forever as a mouthless, slug-like creature that barely even resembles the human he used to be. It is in this state, at the end of the story, that Ted declares, “I have no mouth. And I must scream.”

  • I was the only one still sane and whole. Really!

  • If there was a sweet Jesus and if there was a God, the God was AM.

Ellen

Ellen is the deuteragonist of the late Harlan Ellison's short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. Ellen has been tortured by AM for over 109 years. She displays a great degree of empathy and morality compared to the other survivors; however, as Ellen is the only female survivor, the others use her sexually by AM's design.

Before being captured by AM, Ellen supposedly prized her chastity above all else - a trait AM took great delight in twisting beyond recognition. By the start of the story, Ellen is obsessively promiscuous, driven by the supercomputer's mental distortion to seek out sex from any of the other survivors; however, she never enjoys sex with any of them save for Benny - a fact that Ted, secretly infatuated with Ellen, deeply resents. As the only member of the group she likes to any meaningful degree, seeing Benny harmed is guaranteed to drive Ellen into a hysterical fit.

The rest of the survivors treat her with a mixture of protectiveness and contempt depending on the severity of the torture: during the journey's calmer moments, they happily carry her; conversely, when Ellen is lying on the floor after suffering a breakdown at the sight of Benny's punishment, Gorrister goes so far as to kick her in the side.

However, she is still intelligent enough to recognize Ted's plan to mercy-kill the survivors, and follows suit in killing Nimdok, before Ted kills her as well.

  • This could go on for centuries. AM has all the time in the world, all the world in the world, as a matter of fact! And we never age, we never die, we just truck around day after month after year, don't we, AM you sonuvabitch demented god, you!

  • I've got to have something, Ted. Maybe there'll be some Bartlett pears or peaches. Please, Ted, let's try it.

Role assigned to: Misha Ostrovsky

Gorrister is the tritagonist of the late Harlan Ellison's short story, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream.

Before the destruction of the human race, Gorrister was a political idealist and conscientious objector to the war. After a century of torture, AM has crushed his optimism and replaced it with apathetic listlessness: after the initial shock of seeing a recreation of his corpse with it's throat slit from ear to ear, Gorrister can barely find it in himself to respond with anything other than despair. Nonetheless, he is assigned to the task of telling stories to the childlike Benny after AM blinds him, keeping his mind (what remains of it) distracted from the torture inflicted on him. At the end of the short story, Gorrister is killed along with the other survivors by Ted.

  • Reminds me of when AM ripped that hole open in Benny's chest. 'Course, AM sewed him back up again before he bled to death. That bastard's never gonna let us die. He's just gonna keep torturing us forever.

  • Why doesn't it just do us in and get it over with? Christ, I don't know how much longer I can go on like this.

Role assigned to: NevByte

Benny is the secondary antagonist of the late Harlan Ellison's post-apocalyptic short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream.

Once a handsome man, Benny was transformed into a hideous ape-like creature with huge genitals for AM's amusement, and his mind was also severely stunted. The original story says that he used to be a brilliant scientist before this, though the game changes this. He is also mentioned to have been homosexual. Early in the story, Benny's eyes are melted by AM, and later he goes completely insane when they reach the promised canned food only to realize they don't have a can opener, and starts eating Gorrister's face. Ted then kills him with an ice spear to put him out of his misery.

cast offsite

Nimdok is a major character in the late Harlan Ellison's 1967 horror short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream.

While his story remains mysterious in the short story, in the game, he is revealed to be a former Nazi scientist who has conducted numerous experiments on Jewish patients to find the secret of eternal youth.

It's revealed that Nimdok is actually a Jew himself, having sold out his family to the Nazis in exchange for his life and liberty in continuing his experiments. Like Mengele, Nimdok survived the war and went into hiding in Brazil until AM came to power.

As one of the few survivors of the apocalypse, Nimdok was tortured relentlessly by AM; however, AM also felt a twisted sort of kinship with the retired scientist, and eventually set out to restore Nimdok's ailing memory and encourage him to continue his experiments.
