Hex's Hue: Another Tone - I: My Best Friend
Project Overview
Hex's Hue: Another Tone
A mage who can't control their magic accidentally casts a spell that makes them "discolor" everything in their path. They try to find a friend they made in wizard school to help them—only to find out she dropped out too.
Hex’s Hue is a series of animated shorts that follow two mages: the brains of the pair, Hayi, and the brawn of the pair, Ainslie. When Hayi attempts to cast a spell that helps them water their plants, they instead accidentally drain the color from their body—to the point that wherever they walk turns gray, like them.
What is Hex’s Hue and what is it for?
This series is an animated comic in the form of a WEBTOON. It will eventually be released as a WEBTOON as well as an animation in the future. The first episode is a part of my school project, which will help me gain credits to graduate. The animation style will be like an animated comic book; it is similar to Vox Akuma’s short film, The Demon Hungers.
What is Hex’s Hue: Another Tone, and how does it differ from Hex’s Hue?
This casting call is for one of the episodes of Hex’s Hue: Another Tone. As we were producing Hex’s Hue, we realized that we needed more help with a project of this scale. While writing is relatively easier to accomplish on a faster timeline, doing all the art has proven to be more and more challenging. Because of this, we need more time to release episodes. However, the world of Hex’s Hue is still rather vast and I still have to continue working on other projects for school.
Hex’s Hue: Another Tone is a side series to Hex’s Hue that will be released in between the main series’ episodes so that our audience can have some content while waiting for new episodes. In addition, I (Miko) am now in audio mixing classes for school (which I didn’t really anticipate), thus, I need material to work on that isn’t necessarily the main series. I’m still a beginner at mixing, and I want Hex’s Hue’s mixing to have a quality higher than what I am currently capable of doing.
So, while I am learning how to mix, I will be using Hex’s Hue: Another Tone as my deliverable for my audio mixing class. Unlike Hex’s Hue, Hex’s Hue: Another Tone will be an audio drama. This is so that our artists can focus on the main series of Hex’s Hue. Some of the characters in Hex’s Hue: Another Tone might go onto the main series eventually, too.
Is this paid or unpaid?
Unfortunately, because I’m a student, all of this will be unpaid volunteer work for now. However, I understand how unsustainable that is for producing a whole series in the long run, so we are looking into hosting a Kickstarter to fund and pay everyone on the team (both cast and crew) for future/later episodes–which includes everyone working on Hex’s Hue: Another Tone, as well! :)
What is this specific HHAT episode about?
This episode of Hex’s Hue: Another Tone follows a dog named Piano who is trying to find his owner, Aviv, when he suddenly disappears. During his search, he makes an unlikely friend with a cat named Creek of the Woods who in their own way wants to help Piano look for Aviv. On this journey, they meet a wizard named Hayi who is more than willing to assist Piano. The duo’s search turns into something even greater, when they find out that in one of Hayi’s books, there is a prophecy that perfectly describes the both of them…
…and the catastrophic event that the two will cause.

PIANO
Male • Dog
Don’t be fooled by his cute looks, or soft "wuffs"—for he is highly intelligent and scheming. He's a diva who has only ever shown affection for his human companion, Aviv, an alchemist who found and raised him. Piano learned the ways of potion-crafting by retrieving ingredients for Aviv and observing his work up close.
With his little paws and big brain, Piano would do anything and everything to keep his best friend safe - even if it means becoming the catalyst for chaos.
Piano's barks are similar to how a dog-type of Pokemon would speak their own names, but in this case it's "WUFF!". His "wuffs" are slightly more pronounced, but the pitch and volume is like Rockruff (Pokemon Journeys). His tone varies based on the party he's speaking to. With Aviv, he's enthusiastic and caring, with Creek of the Woods, he's all-knowing, sassy and even complaining in a teasing manner. Additional note: Piano has the physical incapacity to raise his voice due to his small build, but he will try.
Hayi: YOU TWO! A brown dog and a black cat! I’ve been waiting for YEARS!
Piano: (Piano is confused.)
Creek: He called you old.
Piano: (“That’s clearly not what I said!”)
Hayi: Excuse me?!
Piano: (calmly warning Creek to stop doing that)
Creek: And squeaky. Like rats. Kekekekekekek.
Piano: (angrily rants about Creek’s misinformation)
Line 3: Because of their encounter with Hayi, Creek feels a little dejected about themself. Piano tries to comfort them.
(Please look at the description for the line.)
“Enough of that stupid prophecy! I’ll–fine. I’ll at least give you the benefit of the doubt. But don’t think you’re off the hook just yet.”
“Creek’s plenty smart! You led me to the ingredients so quickly. So… Don't underestimate yourself, alright?”
CREEK OF THE WOODS
Gender nonconforming (but all genders are welcome to audition!) • Cat
Born in a traveling tribe of cats, Creek of the Woods was gifted with innate magical prowess. They were also the strongest in their litter and lived happily with their tribe. That is, however, until one fateful day: their tribe suffered an attack meant for another tribe, wiping out every single member.Creek managed to survive due to their power, but the incident also destroyed their brain–and traumatized them so much–leaving them to be an empty shell of their former self. Now, in order to seek some semblance of what once was, they have become an arsonist… for the cinders of life are the chaos that keeps them from going insane.
Creek of the Woods has a specific speaking style wherein they speak in odd grammar and in third person. They’re very silly, usually very upbeat, loud, confident and have a medium-high pitched voice. Something gremlin, something cryptid, similar to Mangey Tails (Sonic Prime), Zim (Invader Zim), and Bubble (The Amazing Digital Circus) but we’re open to other interpretations. Consider pronouncing words in weird and unique ways, not unlike Dexter (Dexter’s Laboratory). Unique accents are very welcome, especially if they’re natural.
Please note that Creek’s “kekekek” is a laugh, it’s a little raspy, and will be very important for their character because they do it very often. It should sound similar to these two clips, but more like a “ghiikikiki”.
Line 1: Creek and Piano are speaking to Hayi, and they’re translating Piano’s dog barks. They’re intentionally mistranslating what Piano is saying to mess with him and Hayi.
Line 2: Hayi, in an effort to gain Creek’s and Piano’s trust, starts talking about Creek’s history. Creek denies everything they say in an uncharacteristically deadpan manner.
Line 3: After their encounter with Hayi, Creek seems dejected for some reason. And quieter, much quieter than they usually are.
“Creek translation is best. Creek is no mistranslator. Creek good at translator. Yes… Kekekekek.”
“Wizard telling lie. Nature of wizard to tell lie. Creek know Creek story. No one else.”
“Maybe wizard right. Creek know not what think. Creek no think. Creek only fire.”
AVIV LEVITAN
Male • Human
Aviv is a potion-crafter who tends to the ponds surrounding his little cottage isolated within the woods. He enjoys furthering his studies and making potions for clients who don’t actually know what he looks like. He prefers to remain anonymous.
His more intense days involve cleaning up botched experiment messes, or fending off invasive frogs that make a mess in his pond. He is a gentle soul with kindness for everyone and his best friend, Piano, but he carries a silent burden—that Aviv is protecting an unknowing Piano from greater forces.
Aviv speaks gently, with a tone and pitch much like Shikanoin Heizou (Genshin Impact). Though personality-wise, he's a bit of a klutz and rather frail, which can carry over into his voice. In heated moments, he becomes sheepish. He’s a little jumpy, sweet, soft and sincere.
Line 1: One of Aviv’s potion formulas explodes and suddenly, he’s out of ingredients. He’s a little upset at himself and dejected but remains kind toward Piano.
Line 2: Aviv expresses his affection for his best friend.
Line 3: Another potion is about to explode!
“Hey, Piano? Could you do me a favor? Could you go to the forest and fetch some new ingredients for me? The list should be on the table… er, whatever is left of it, anyway. I’d come with you, but I just want to rest a little bit. Be safe, okay?”
“Piano, one more thing? I love you.”
“Whoa, whoa whoa! Oh no! Piano, take cover! It’s about to–! AHHH! Aaah… Oh no… I think I messed up…”
