Harry and Mack | ANIMATIC SERIES

Harry and Mack | ANIMATIC SERIES

Project Overview

A series of animatics focusing on the young irascible, egotistical Harry Murphy and his best friend, a sardonic, pragmatic, cowardly lion named Mack.

(WIP description)

If you’re auditioning for a voice actor:

·      Stay reachable and active. Please make sure I have a reliable way to contact you. You could provide something like your Discord, Twitter DMs, or basically any other messaging platform. Being responsible helps a lot during casting, direction, and recording session. If you ever have questions about the role, the script, the project, etc., feel free to ask!

·      Use a good microphone when recording. Audio quality matters when evaluating auditions.

o   Try to record with the best microphone you have available.

o   Avoid background noise like fans, traffic, and music.

o   Clear audio helps your performance shine and makes it easier to judge the acting itself.

·      Stay in-character during your performance. Fully commit to the character while delivering your lines.

o   A little improvisation is okay, but make sure the character still feels authentic.

·      Read the bios carefully. Before auditioning, take a moment to decide whether the role truly fits your voice and acting style.

o   Pay attention to the character’s personality traits as described.

o   Choose roles thoughtfully rather than rushing into them.

·      Age requirement: Auditioners should be 13 years or older.

o   If you’re younger but otherwise experienced enough to perform convincingly, you’re still welcome to try!

·      Start your audition with a brief introduction. Before performing your lines, please introduce yourself among the lines of:

“Hi! I’m (your first and last name), and I’m auditioning for the role of (character).”

o   Then record three takes of each line so I can hear different variations of your performance.

·      Be prepared to give the name you want to be credited under. By auditioning, you’re agreeing to provide your full name (i.e. Jane Doe) for crediting purposes, and that name should be the one you recite in your audition intro. You will not automatically be credited by your handle.

o   If you’re uncomfortable with that, please let me know and we can discuss alternatives.

·      Give it your best effort. Try to picture yourself in the world of the character. The more you immerse yourself in the role, the stronger your audition will feel.

o   Think about how they move, react, and speak.

o   Let that mindset guide your delivery.

·      Relax and enjoy it! I want people to enjoy the process of auditioning. This should be exciting, not stressful. Do your best, have fun with the character, and let your personality and acting shine through.

Harry Murphy

Harry Murphy is the irascible, egotistical little dude with an attitude who needs no introduction! Fashioning himself as “the original recipe himself”, he’s a born schemer who despises school and girls in equal measure, and he’s either the coolest motherfucker alive or an arrogant loser. There is no middle ground.

Not that it slows him down. Harry charges into every situation with all the confidence in the world. Even when the (inevitable) fallout is catastrophic, he never doubts himself for more than half a second. He can’t quit chaos—no, chaos can’t quit him!

Every disaster can be traced directly back to his own mouth, hands, or idea that should never have left his head. In his mind, Harry’s the unstoppable hero of every story—even when the story clearly doesn’t want him there.

Harry’s voice should capture the raw, boyish sharpness of a clever street kid without drifting into caricature. He’s an 8-year-old who thinks he’s grown — someone who talks like he’s seen the world when he’s barely seen past his block. African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) influence is welcome to reflect his background.

  • [lax] "People say ‘Just do your best!’ But what if my best is garbage? Shouldn’t I just NOT TRY? Y’know, to save time?"

  • [casual] "Mack, if you were human, you’d totally get it. Everyone expects you to work hard, but for what? I say, if someone’s dumb enough to do it for you, let ’em!"

  • [prideful] “Some kids wanna be astronauts. Some wanna be actors. Some wanna be President. I wanna be me. And lucky for me, heh heh, I already nailed it!”

Mack the Lion

A sardonic, pragmatic lion, Mack is Harry’s best friend, handler, and emergency response unit. He has his survival instincts dialed to eleven, and believes in planning ahead, minimizing damage, and not getting detained. When things go south—and they always do!—he’s either attempting to defuse the situation or already halfway up a tree.

Though an established predator, Mack avoids fights whenever possible. He runs or hides without shame, because living to see tomorrow beats winning today. He’s smart in a quiet, practical way that never quite works against Harry’s shenanigans.

Though Mack is quick to snipe at Harry, he still sticks around because… well, someone has to keep Harry from becoming a global threat unsupervised. And unfortunately, Mack is just the guy for the job.

His voice should sound youthful, articulate, and slightly nerdy, with a faint rasp or nasal edge that gives him a dry, ironic bite. He’s a lion with a mind like a tired Honors student—smart and witty, yet fed up with everyone’s bullshit, but never really lifeless.

  • [explaining] “My life philosophy is simple: if it can explode, assume it will, and stand very far back.”

  • [deadpan] “I could stop this. I absolutely could. But then I’d be involved, so I think I'll just not do that.”

  • [anxious] “O-Okay, I just want it on record that I said ‘no’ at least six times before the fire started!”

The scriptwriting should absolutely EXCEL in comedic timing, personality, and character interactions. It should be natural, tightly paced, and overall funny as fuck, from subtle, sophisticated humor to the more surreal, in-your-face comedy. Satire is key, albeit not to the point where it’s straightforward. Think Calvin and Hobbes, Community, Gumball (season 2 onwards, obviously), Smiling Friends, the Lego movies, Mickey Mouse (2013), Boondocks, The Emperor’s New Groove, etc.

Harry and Mack invokes the visual flair of 80s-2000s Saturday morning cartoons, comic books, and anime. More detail can be found in the Doc below, as well as glimpses of my own artstyle so you can grasp it better.

For how Harry and Mack looks in motion, it moves at 24~30 FPS. It’s hand-drawn. It should have smoother animation reminiscent of anime, the Disney classics, and 80s cartoons like Alvin and the Chipmunks. But when things get really crazy, the animation is absolutely zany and high-energy. Take reference from the opening cinematics from Sonic CD and Sonic Riders, and basically anything from Flying Bark Productions or Studio Trigger, I suppose.

Also utilizes impact frames, smear frames, and motion blur. Don’t be afraid to go too off-model. Who wants to be absolutely perfect? What is this, cheap Flash animation?

Speaking of which, Flash animation is also permitted. Think Mercury Filmworks (Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Mickey Mouse (2013), The Ghost of Molly McGee, Hilda). Make sure to watch clips from those respective shows for reference.

You’ll be working alongside me in a producer role that’s equal parts project quarterback, tone guardian, and chaos accountant. Your job is to make sure the show stays funny, fast, and finishable—without sanding off what makes it dangerous.

Your job is to:

  • take my creative goals and convert them into clear, bite-sized production tasks.
  • break every episode from outline to finished animatic
  • keep the pipeline moving
  • maintain quality control
  • managing the overall scope
  • and ensuring it’s funny as fuck while being, sharp, dangerous, character-forward, andfinishable without neutering it.

As you can gather from the role, you will create and manage background music that actively supports the story and on-screen action. Draw inspiration from 4Kids (barring Sonic X, that shit was ASS), Dragon Ball Z (preferably the original Japanese), Tom and Jerry, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Amazing World of Gumball, Guy Moon, Pokémon (specifically from 1998-2006), and similar styles. Use clear leitmotifs and character themes—building on premade themes I’ll provide—and apply strong Mickey Mousing to closely follow movement, comedy, and timing. Shape each cue to fit the exact scene, emotion, and narrative beat.

Preferred music style: 80s~late 2000s. Rock (pop punk / power pop), New Jack Swing, jazz / jazz fusion, hip-hop, Jersey club.
