FRYD
Project Overview
Introduction:
We are Iris, Malin and Adelen. We are graduate students for our bachelor degree in Animation and we are currently busy with our final film "Fryd". Fryd is by idea from Norwegian directer Katinka Adelen Holt and is inspired by her connection to Italian Island Sardinia. She has figured out a fantastic way to animate this film and we are currently busy with production. I, Iris, am a Dutch producer and take on various roles and can't wait to collaborate with people all over the world, as I think this project will be beautiful with the right people.
Our goal for this project is to hopefully reach to animation festivals. This is quite a big stretch but hopefully a right step in our professional life, as we hope this will be too for our collaborators.
Synopsis:
A young woman, with the name of August carries heavy thoughts that manifests through the mighty
sea. Her story takes place on a beach, where she wanders alongside the shore while she follows two
sets of footprints. While walking in these prints, she reflects back on the past. Thereafter, we jump in
time to earlier that day, where August stood on the beach together with her friend Fryd. Wave after
wave crashes into the shore in her attempt to tell Fryd something.
Fryd interrupts her and asks her what she wants for her birthday, as she is looking for the perfect
gift. August seizes for an opportunity to challenge Fryd’s limits and suggests that she has a darker
desire. When Fryd doesn’t catch on August’s vague hint and asks curiously instead of giving August
the assurance she is searching for, August becomes evasive. August slips and falls on a slippery
stone when she gets distracted of the waves crashing into the shore again. Fryd becomes worried,
but August pretends to act as nothing had happened. When Fryd finally reaches through to August,
still in search of a birthday gift, August gives a dark and suicidal answer. An awkward situation occurs
as Fryd does not understand whether or not it’s supposed to be a joke, and August takes back her
statement, claiming she is happy as long as the two of them are together.
Later in the evening, August invites Fryd to take a swim with her. Under water where words cannot be
heard, August kisses Fryd. The moment looks harmonious and resembles a renaissance painting when
August is finally feels she is able to share what laid under the surface. However, the idyllic scene takes
a sharp turn when Fryd feels the need to breathe and tries to break away, but August does not let go.
After a struggle for freedom, Fryd pushes August away when August opens her eyes for the first time
during their kiss and sees Fryd’s reaction. When Fryd, back at the shore tries to get further away, her
hand slips on the stone when August yells out her name. In the end Fryd leaves, and August stands
alone on the beach equally to the beginning of the story, and ultimately decides to walk out into the
sea alone.

Leading Role.
August is a metaphor for a siren that drags others down into sea with
her. Her character is meant to represent and project the real fear young
people especially have about oversharing and becoming a burden,
for others linked to the term ”Trauma Dumping”. It is her own fear and
troubles of communicating that leads her to almost drowning her friend
in an attempt to confide in her. Throughout the story, August’s point
of view is divided between the past and the current; In the past we
see her struggling to express her feelings to Fryd, and in the present
we can see her regret of her choices and statements. There is a clear
difference between her present and former personality, where her current
personality wishes to stop her earlier actions, and consequently creates
a strong inner conflict that creates a mystery of what is gonna happen
that is so wrong, and the question of August’s drowning of Fryd was
accidental or not.

well honestly, what i want is just to die...
you're just not my audience
what i actually want is just to be here with you
Secondairy role - Fryd
Fryd is the Norwegian word for happiness, and her character at first
glance appears to be happy and carefree. Fryd is a metaphor for the
Saviour and with her empathic and listening personality, she can
help August. However, the challenge arises due to August’s inability
in communication and fear of ”Trauma Dumping” that leads to her
struggle to express herself and ends up exceeding Fryd’s limits by
nearly drowning her in her attempt to express her feelings through an
underwater kiss rather than speech. The underwater kiss leads to Fryd
pushing away from August in need for air, and thus Fryd is not the
saviour that August had hoped for.

so anyway, hear me out - i was thinking for your birthday
come on you are like the most difficult person in the world to get a gift for, there must be something you want.
nothing in the entire world?
We need stylised 2D water SFX animation. We have a scene above water where we need waves crashing on the beach animation. This can just be white flat coloured nothing else. We also have scenes underwater where need bubbles and ripples in the water, this can also just be a flat colour. it is important that this shapes atleast feel like a vector, I use the lasso tool to get these shapes down so it feels a little squared off.

*Say something you think would fit*
For our film FRYD we need a strong ambient music that builds up tension. The goal is that it feels cinematic. it draws inspiration from the legends of siren so we are considering putting a female singing voice through it with a reverberator. Also a strong theme of our film is water, the have the music transform in one scene to an underwater feeling would be a strong storytelling element. The film is around 6 minutes long.
Currently i am still exploring and gathering a collection of inspiration but i can really appreciate some further input.
