Fairytale Characters for Radio Fairfax - East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon

Fairytale Characters for Radio Fairfax - East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon

Project Overview

I am producing a recurring show for Radio Fairfax. It is on public access TV, so consider yourself a volunteer. However, if you want to be a paid, professional voice actor some day, any part you perform will prolly look impressive on your resume. You can also incorporate your work into a demo reel. There will also be a Podcast and possibly a Webcast of the finished project available on our website.

Anyway, the story is called, "East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon. I expect you to have read it before you bother auditioning. You can find it for free, here:

http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/books/norway/thornethomsen/eastsun.html

The characters are as follows: Man, Polar Bear, Lassie, East Wind/West Wind, South Wind/North Wind, Prince, Horrid Witch/Witch with Big Nose/Old Hag

I expect that you:

- Take this opportunity seriously

- Will use a professional mic w/pop filter or windscreen

- There will be NO background noise (do not forget to shut off the A/C)

- No mouth noises, like lip smacking or swallowing

- No heavy breathing

- Not read between the brackets; those are your instructions

Instructions:

- I know it is an audiobook, but try not to sound like your character is reading

- Each [pause] should be one half a second of silence

- Leave one half of a second of silence at the beginning and end of the recording

- No special effects - you can edit out your mistakes, but that's all

- No compression, noise reduction, or other kinds of post-production effects

- Record format: WAV

- Sample rate: 44,100

- Bit depth: 16 bits

- Channels: Mono

Last but not least, be sure that the audio peaks at or BELOW -3db, therefore, it will not sound distorted after uploading.

Horrid Witch should sound evil. Witch w/Big Nose should sound nasal. Old Hag should sound, well, old.

  • [Horrid Witch] Ha, ha, ha! [laughingly] And where do you come from that you do not know that it is to-night that the Prince chooses his bride. When the moon stands high over the tree tops yonder we meet in the clearing by the old oak. There the caldrons are ready with boiling lye, for don't you know? He's going to choose for his bride the one who can wash three spots of tallow from his shirt, Ha, ha, ha! [pause]

  • [Witch w/Big Nose] Now, let's begin. [pause]

  • [Old Hag] Ah! You can't wash, let me try. [pause]

  • [un-afraid] No, not at all. [pause] [Imploringly] Tell me the way then, and I'll search you out; that, surely, I may get leave to do. [pause]

  • Can you tell me the way to the castle that lies East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon? [pause] [graciously] Yes ! And thank you. [pause]

  • [politely] Pray tell me what goes on here to-night that you are all so busy, and could I perhaps get something to do for a night's lodging and a bit of food? [pause] [modestly and hopeful] I don't know, but I think I can. [pause]

  • What have you done ?!? You have made us both unlucky, for had you held out only this one year, I had been freed. For I am the White Bear by day and a man by night. It is a wicked witch who has bewitched me; and now I must set off from you to her. She lives in a castle which stands East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon, and there are many trolls and witches there and one of those is the wife I must now have." [pause]

  • [hopelessly] Yes, you may do that, but there is no way to that place. It lies East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon and thither you can never find your way. [pause]

  • [trying to sound insulting and not so relieved] Ah! You're none of you worth a straw, you can't wash. Why there sits a beggar lassie, I'll be bound she knows how to wash better than the whole lot of you. [encouragingly] Come here, lassie. Can you wash the shirt clean, lassie? [pause] [confidently] Yes; you are the lassie for me. [pause]

Gruff; rough and low in pitch.

  • Good evening to you ! [pause] Will you give me your youngest daughter ? If you will, I will make you as rich as you are now poor. [pause] I'll give you time to think; next Thursday I'll come for your answer. [pause]

  • Are you afraid ? Well, mind and hold tight by my shaggy coat, and then there's nothing to fear. [pause]

  • Lassie, why are you so sorrowful ? This castle and all that is in it are yours, the silver bell will give you whatever you wish. I only beg one thing of you [hesitate] ask no questions, trust me, and nothing shall harm you. So now be happy again. [pause]

The East and West Winds should sound related, because they are brothers, but also distinct from one another at the same time.

  • [East Wind] But, if you will, I'll go with you to my brother the West Wind. Maybe he knows, for he's much stronger. So, if you will just get on my back, I'll carry you thither. [pause]

  • [West Wind] Nay, so far I've never blown; but if you will, I'll go with you to our brother the South Wind, for he is much stronger than either of us, and he has flapped his wings far and wide. Maybe he'll tell you. You can get on my back and I'll carry you to him. [pause]

The South and North Winds should sound related, because they are brothers, but also distinct from one another at the same time. One should sound colder.

  • [South Wind] You don't say so. That's she, is it? [pause] Well, I have blustered about in most places in my time, but that far I have never blown; however, if you will, I'll take you to my brother the North Wind; he is the oldest and strongest of all of us, and if he doesn't know where it is, you'll never find anyone in the world to tell you. You can get on my back and I'll carry you thither. [pause]

  • [South Wind] Well, you needn't be so put out, for here I am your brother, the South Wind, and here is the lassie who ought to marry the Prince who dwells in the castle that lies East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon. She wants to ask you, if you ever were there, and can tell her the way, for she would be so glad to find him again. [pause]

  • [North Wind] Heigh, there, what do you want? [pause] Yes, I know well enough where it is. Once in my life I blew an aspen leaf thither, but I was so tired I couldn't blow a puff for ever so many days after it. But if you really wish to go thither, and aren't afraid to come along with me, I'll take you on my back and see if I can blow you there. [pause] Very well then, but you must sleep here to-night, for we must have the whole day before us if we're to get thither at all. [pause] Are you afraid ?[pause]
