 long ago in Xerxes(before he became a living Philosopher's stone), Van Hohenheim had a daughter. not biologically but borrowed from among the child slaves in his former master's house. he Named her Heva. not only did Hohenheim name her, but he protected and cared for her from nearly the day they met. But one week before the destruction of Xerxes, Heva died of dehydration just outside the gates of the royal city. after her death, her soul and mind were absorbed back into the Gate whence they came(while a distraught Van Hohenheim was left to bury his beloved daughter's lifeless body). for nearly a century after Heva's death, Van Hohenheim struggled to find meaning in his life. over the centuries, he became cold and aloof to protect himself from ever being hurt again. 

now(4 centuries later), Van Hohenheim and Heva's Reincarnation, 25-year-old State Alchemist Sarah Browning meet again in the year leading up to The Promised Day.  Heva(who remembers everything)needs her father now more than ever before.
