Dear Diary | BFA Thesis Film - CALL FOR VOICE TALENT & COMPOSER

Dear Diary | BFA Thesis Film - CALL FOR VOICE TALENT & COMPOSER

Project Overview

Hello! Thank you for taking interest in auditioning for my thesis film!

My name is Jack Bostaph, and I'm a Traditional Animation student at Laguna College of Art and Design! I'm headed into my fourth and final year, which means I am in the midst of working on my capstone thesis film, entitled "Dear Diary."

"Dear Diary" is a short film loosely based on a real experience I had during fifth grade. The film follows Julia, a teenage girl who is about to graduate high school. While getting ready to leave for her graduation ceremony, she discovers a box with her old fifth-grade diary inside. She reads through it, revisiting her experience with her toxic friend-turned-bully, Elise. Having had years to process it, she makes her final entry in the diary, thus closing that chapter in her life.

This is a paid position on a student budget for around 1.5 minutes of dialogue between two characters, lines ranging from 10-30 seconds each. The whole film is predicted to be a little over 2 minutes in total, the majority of which needing music to accompany the visuals and dialogue. You must be 16 years of age or older to audition/apply, for ease of payment and compliance with labor laws. I am looking for one or two actors to provide the voices of the main character and her younger self, and a composer to score the film. Voice actors must be willing to provide any extra gasps, grunts, or sighs upon request.

Auditions can be of lower quality, but you must have access to good quality equipment or live near Laguna Beach, CA to record in-person. Recordings must not be pitch-adjusted or have any tampering with the audio besides cropping the beginning and end. I'd like to have a good idea of how your voice sounds so I can choose a fitting actor. During the final recording process, sessions are preferably held over discord or in person, but can be done independently and sent over via email and Google Drive.

Payment for this project is in USD, and can be sent via PayPal, Venmo or Zelle. The rate for each character is listed in the role details of this casting call. If both voices are done by the same actor, you will receive the rates of both characters. Use of AI to generate or modify your voice for this project is strictly prohibited. You may use your audition and, if chosen, your official lines in your reel after the premiere of the film in May 2027.

Latest Updates

  • Application Deadline - Closing Early

Hello everyone! Thank you for all the traction my little thesis film has gotten over this past week, it means so much that people are enjoying my story ^-^

I just wanted to send out an update that, due to the many many auditions I have received already, I will be closing this project tomorrow afternoon/night (PST) and reviewing everyone's applications to choose final voice actors and my composer! So if you were considering auditioning, but haven't yet, now's the time!

If you receive a message from me, it does not automatically mean I have chosen you, but that I am highly considering you for the role! I will be making sure you are aware of and comfortable with the pay and timeline of this project so that if I do select you, everything will be as transparent as possible to reduce confusion about details.

Roles should be finalized some time this weekend. Unfortunately, due to how many applicants there are, I am unable to send a personalized message to each of you regarding your application status, but know that I have carefully reviewed each and every applicant to make the best decision for my film, and appreciate every single one.

If you have any questions or need to contact me for anything, please reach out over dms on here, or my other social media.

Looking forward to working with you!

    Jack (@aurel_arcanum)

I'm looking for a composer who is comfortable working in a more minimal orchestral style. Primary instrumentation may include (but is by no means limited to) piano, acoustic guitar, marimba, violin, and/or kalimba.  Minimal to no use of unpitched percussion, as this film leans more towards a simple, nostalgic, and comforting feeling. Main style inspirations include Sleeping at Last, Amber Run, and Arnor Chu. I have also created a playlist that, for the most part, represents the style I'm looking for:

Please upload examples of your work directly to the application, or dm me a link to your portfolio. Not providing a portfolio will lower your chances of being selected for this role.

Use of AI to generate your music for this project is strictly prohibited. You retain full ownership and distribution rights to the music, with the agreement that I retain the license to use it for all purposes relating to the film, including, but not limited to, film trailers, public release, and film festival entries.
