DANGANRONPA UPSIDE-DOWN MADNESS
Project Overview
DANGANRONPA: UPSIDE-DOWN MADNESS is a non-profit, 6-chapter fan project created by non-professionals as a passion project, led by Starry dev (itss_starry#3065 on discord), and Scandium dev. This project has no affiliation with Kodaka or the original Danganronpa series.
The story follows 16 different participants who were selected to enter a game. Trapped inside a facility, they must kill another participant and get away with it if they want to escape.
The series is planned to be an audio-visual novel posted as edited Youtube videos.

This project will not show anything explicit, nor will it require the voice actors to record anything as such. Anything either explicit or sensitive involving characters will only be explored in non-voiced sections.

GENERAL TRIGGER WARNINGS : All warnings for the original Danganronpa games will apply. Certain characters deal with potential triggering topics from their backstory or events happening during the story. We will show the voice talent who are cast the topics beforehand. If not comfortable, voice actors are free to decline voicing the character.
There’s no limit to the number of characters you audition to.
We will not be doing callbacks nor dismissals: just contacting the chosen voice actors.

- AOI Thrives on attention. Self obsessed, quick thinking person who always has something to say or criticize. Ironically she can’t handle criticism of her own. Likes to brag but is very aware when someone is uncomfortable and tries tuning it down. She truly believes in her own intuition and treats with theatrics every situation she’s in.
- AOI’s voice is grand elegant female pitch. She sounds like she’s always performing for an audience. The texture of her voice comes out as smooth, and feathery. Her tone is sly and over the top loud. She has a tendency to want to be heard. On occasions she will lose her theatrics and her voice turns quiet and muted.

- MARIA is cold, very defensive and just prefers to be left alone rather than entertain nonsense. Regardless of her intimidating personality she won’t pick a fight with anyone unless they give her a reason to. Despite claiming to dislike everyone, she pays close attention to some certain exceptions. She may struggle to open up emotionally, but she’s very well grounded in reality.
- MARIA’s Voice is a female sly steely pitch. She sounds like she decided she doesn’t trust you. The texture of her voice is smoky, hoarse, and heavy. Her voice is steady and confident. She may say stuff under her breath when annoyed.

- TAEMIN is easy going, cool, moderately mischievous. Has a big heart and will always put himself in danger if it means he’s protecting someone. He’s quite mysterious but still enjoys the company of people. He’s laid back but when the moment calls for it he can be a very effective leader and voice of reason.
- TAEMIN’s voice is a raspy, laid back male pitch. He sounds relaxed but reliable. His voice is low, inviting and soothing. He’s able to speak up to call anyone’s attention. On occasions his tone will be completely serious when necessary.

- SAGE is observant and tries to not speak her mind too often. Avoiding conflict, she’s nice to people even if she doesn’t like them. There are times where she tries to be mean but can’t really do it, unless it’s serious. She is confident and is ready to be there when people need it. Knows how to make people open up and give a good word of advice while keeping a gentle playful vibe.
- SAGE’s voice is feminine. Cool and steady. Slightly husky while keeping that sarcastic tone. She is mostly unbothered but keeps emotion in it. Her voice is confident, it makes you feel secure and shows she’s reliable.

“I prefer tequila over vodka and rum over coñac but if I had to choose, I would pick tequila. It’s easier to work with. Bourbon and whiskey also have a tasty flavor, but what I believe is most interesting are the touches of fruit liquor that can show in a drink.”

- ZETSU is friendly by nature and has a very “big brother” personality. Since he is quite strong he is very helpful around others. He is mature but when relaxed he lets go and shows a more playful side to him. He’s very impulsive and emotionally driven. He’s not too good at thinking things through and becomes reckless.
- ZETSU’s voice is masculine and rugged. He sounds like someone you could trust until he does something stupid that makes you backtrack. It has a hint of nasal resonance and mid‑to‑low‑pitched, with a playful tone, but capable of sounding mature when protecting others. His voice is strong and loud in emotional

- MIRI is quiet, sweet, nerdy but also strong and assertive. She can be shy and overthink stuff too much but will try to stay positive for her own sake. She is always helpful whenever her skills are needed. She’s still a cautious person and puts herself first before other people. She prefers to be alone, or by people who won’t bother her.
- MIRI’s voice is girly but mid lower, slightly raspy and slightly nasal. She sounds youthful, focused and intelligent. Her tone usually remains calm but she can squeak when she gets surprised. Semi-monotoned except for highly emotional moments.

- REIKA is outgoing, overly friendly, not the brightest at all. Freaks out constantly and is emotionally volatile. Swings quickly between panic and excitement. She’s constantly searching for company from others or any sort of validation. She overthinks and prefers ignoring her issues. She’s very loud.
- REIKA’s voice is an energetic female pitch. Her voice texture is squeaky with a slight husky feel, similar to when you use your voice too much and it comes out raspy. She speaks quickly, breathlessly and loudly. When scared her voice is wobbly and high.

- KANDA has a charming personality, smooth talker who avoids interrogations turning it to mean spirited jokes. Very witty and usually lives in a moral gray area of self interest. He’s quite a mystery for the rest of the participants. He’s a strange combination of being indifferent and wanting to be needed.
- KANDA’s voice is a cocky male pitch. He sounds like he’s 10 steps ahead of everyone. He’s harsh and at times cruel with others. His voice is mocking, and oozes with superiority. His tone is apathetic and detached. He can be loud at times when upset. He has the capacity to be gentle while remaining firm.

- NAOKI is Introverted. Likes to talk about his favorite topics. Starts loud then slowly backing out and ends up lowering his voice. Gets excited when he sees something he likes. He’s easy to impress. He’s full of wonder and curiosity. He wants to socialize more but he feels he can’t really or ends up trying too hard.
- NAOKI’s voice is masculine but quite high pitched. He gains confidence mid sentence just to lose it pretty quickly. His tone is soft and small. When he gets excited there's a hint of a higher pitch squeak. He speaks quickly when nervous, pronouncing the words back to back together with almost no breathing space.

They like to climb stuff— (thinks his words) more like slithering into stuff. And they are pretty funny. Weirdly the ones I’ve seen like jazz music… I don’t know why.”
“I don’t think it’s… wrong to not tell them. It’s better that way, r-right? (sighs) Please no, I’m scared of her tactics. And in case you missed it, those were her… fists.”

- RENA is very nice and introverted. She doesn’t like to talk much about herself, for her it seems unnecessary. She can be lazy but can keep herself calm under pressure. She might not be the best at expressing emotions but when it comes to comforting someone she is a natural. She can integrate herself to social groups if she needs to but likes her personal space. She likes to skip words since it’s too much effort. She loves to keep herself warm.
- RENA’s voice is feminine soft, calm, and relaxed. She sounds like she might doze off to sleep mid-sentence. Her voice doesn’t get agitated easily, it remains mostly breathy and ethereal.

- DAIMEI tries to be sassy and flirty, thinking of himself as a superior. His loyalty moves to whoever he finds convenient. He can adapt quickly and is intelligent enough for many intellectual tasks. Despite this, he’s careless with his words, and struggles to interact emotionally with others without causing unwanted drama. He’s quite stupid when it comes to social aspects. He thinks life is a party and will always remain that way.
- DAIMEI’s voice is masculine, but taunting. He has a hint of rasp in his voice and playful. Mid-pitched. Sarcastic, expressive, and grounded. Has a small tone in his voice that lets you know he doesn’t take you seriously. When he is panicked he insults his way out of it. Tries to act tough even when he isn’t.

- RIKU comes off as awkward. He’s polite and calm with everyone but also likes keeping to himself. He’s good at connecting dots but misses social cues. He’s an observer. He listens more than he speaks, and when he does speak, it’s usually something insightful, or a sudden sassy comment that catches everyone off-guard. He gets nervous when he’s confused and has a stammer when upset or scared.
- RIKU’s voice is a soft spoken male pitch. His voice sounds like his thoughts are way ahead of his speech. His tone is sincere and calm. Awkward raspy voice that on occasion comes off as muffled when put on the spot.

- NAEO is soft spoken and very well put together. She communicates eloquently and regards everyone with respect. She remembers everything and is always on the lookout for others. She doesn’t crave attention and helps without expecting anything back. She’s frustrated easily when things don’t work out, and blames herself constantly.
- NAEO’s voice is androgynous with a male lean. He sounds like the understanding parent of the group. A well balanced soothing gentle tone, who can quickly switch into a more stern, serious one. His voice is down to earth and comforting.

- AIKO is strong and defiant. She always speaks her mind no matter what she thinks. She tries to be more gentle with girls. She is very reserved although doesn’t have social anxiety. If there isn't a reason to speak, she doesn’t. Firm, cold but will defend herself if she needs to. She shows more emotions when she’s with people she trusts and is confident with.
- AIKO’s voice sits at a mid-pitched elegant level. Her voice is feminine clear and forward. Her voice naturally carries confidence and strength, She’s capable of calling anyone out on their crap. Although most of the time her tone is cooler and reserved.

- EIJI is a free soul and nonchalant for most things. He acts as he pleases to but respects boundaries. He tries to be sweet and friendly but is also strong when he needs to. He is edgy and cryptic, as if he’s playing mental games without bothering to explain what he knows about others.
- EIJI’s voice is masculine but high pitched. He sounds calculating and confident in his assumptions. His tone can be very flirty brotherline seductive when he wants. There is always a breathy, playful feel to his words. When serious, his tone shouldn’t change too much, instead it should become more shallow.

- IKKI is stubborn, confident, silent and mysterious with a huge fighting spirit. She struggles to trust people or be open to them. Often ends up alienated from the group for hiding secrets or making promises that don't actually come true. Despite being introverted she has no problem communicating effectively. Has a huge sense of rightfulness and believes she should bear with responsibilities that are not under her control.
- IKKI’s voice is a feminine pitch. She sounds composed. Her speech is controlled and eloquent. She’s a smooth talker who is indifferent to how her tone or word choice may affect others. Speaks bluntly and confidently.
