Adventures in Dreamland Animated Pilot
Project Overview
This is the pilot episode for a brand new children's animated series, Adventures in Dreamland, featuring the Dream Dragon and a support cast of lovable and memorable characters. This project has been in development for over 20 years!
When I was 17 years old I wrote a funny, 16-line poem about a magical dragon who finds his way into the dream of a child. I called the fun loving character the “Dream Dragon”. He is the friend of all children of the world and the protector of “Dreamland”, the place where a child can escape the nightmares of reality. Writing under the pen name Nyle Steck, I’ve developed an entire series of children’s stories and a comprehensive project centered around the Dream Dragon character. My stories use the Dream Dragon character to entertain, educate and empower. I call these important lessons the “3-E’s”. My own kids have been my most significant inspiration to write children’s stories with a focus on empowerment. While it is very important to “teach” our children, it is equally important to “empower” them. To teach you instill knowledge, to empower you instill confidence and self-worth. In our fast paced world, we need to slow-down enough to ensure that our children have a forum to learn the lessons which both teach and empower. The goal for the project is to use the Dream Dragon and an entire cast of support characters to promote the “3-E’s” through a variety of different topics and medias. We plan to be diversified in our approach and will produce printed picture books and other printed books / materials; electronic picture books; plush stuffed toys; animated series; animated motion picture; licensed products; etc.
The pilot is called "The Sour Case of the Candy Crops".
We are currently looking for several voices for the pilot and look forward to hearing all of your many auditions!

7 years old, polite, fun loving, kind of a goofball, loves candy, but because Mom is a dentist, he rarely gets it, which is why he dreams about it when he goes to Dreamland.
(Loudly) Yes mom, I know.
(Whisper) I don’t normally like to brush my teeth, but on broccoli night, I make an exception!
Hi your royalness – I’m Jackson and we really need your help! Something terrible has happened; all the candy crops taste like broccoli!
(with his mouth full) That’s what I’m talking about! It’s strasselberry, my favorite!! Yum!!!
The King of Nightmares is a living shadow who gets his power from fear. He's also the big bad of the series! We imagine a voice akin to Steve Blum's take on the Green Goblin. Deep slightly gravely, but imposing and regal.
(sinister laugh) My plan is working perfectly! How can a child have sweet dreams, if nothing is sweet? They can’t! THIS will turn them against the King of Dreamland and the Dream Dragon and I will finally have my revenge!
Well, it’s rough on my lower back! But it’s fine, we can go back to the castle, my plan is coming together deliciously!
Wait…What? (Looking left and right, the KON is suddenly pulled out of the scene) Agggghhhhhhhhhhhhh…(a loud crunch is heard) my back!
He is a former Dream Maker and now his title is the adviser to the King, but he is basically a personal assistant. As a former Dream Maker his physical appearance is consistent with the Dream Maker look; older and thin. Because he deals with the royal family his attire is a bit more regal, but nothing too outrageous. The “royalty” of Dreamland is pretty relaxed and easy going…not a lot of royal pomp and circumstance
Okay, okay, who is next? (Looking up from his clipboard) Oh, Farmer Ted, what brings you out from the dusty fields?
The candy crops taste like broccoli? Well that won’t do, that won’t do at all! But you can’t have an audience with the king today, he and the queen are at the Dream Seminar teaching new dream makers and dream fairies how to make dreams. But Princess Penelope is available. Would you like to see her?
(As if he was clearing his throat to make the princess aware of their presence) Ahheeemmm! Your majesty, there are some subjects to see you, they need your help.
The Dream Dragon is the first Dragon to have ever been born in Dreamland and has since become it's protector. He has a strong commanding voice, but is a jolly and jovial character who loves being silly, but can get serious when he needs to. We imagine a powerful bellowing voice that sounds like it's from some far off distant land of unknown origin. He also speaks in rhyme!
The princess called and said there was trouble. So we dropped everything and got here on the double.
The problem is real, that much I can see. This candy’s not sweet, it’s vegtabaly! But I’ve got an idea that I think might just work. Let’s turn all the soil and dig up fresh dirt!
But Jackson my boy, I think we should talk. Cause there’s much more to life, than big poppy rocks! I know that veggies, aren’t what you like to eat. That if you had your way, you’d eat nothing but sweets. But we have to keep balance, to stay healthy and fit. So I’ll give some advice, and hope you’ll take it. If you don’t like your veggies, try making them fun. And just chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp, and those veggies are done! I pretend I’m a giant, eating broccoli trees. Or a plate full of boulders, which are actually peas. So don’t let some veggies, bring your meal to a halt. Just add a pinch of whimsy and some pepper and salt!
She appears prim and proper, but is kind of a rebel. Under her royal dress she wears high-top converse style shoes. Because the King is over protective, she seldom gets out of the castle, so she has a lot of pent up energy and excitement when she gets to be around others. She thinks about sneaking out every now and then, but never does, she has that rebellious side to her, but doesn’t act on it and when around the royal family she conforms to her role. When her parents are not available, she is “in charge” and is always eager to help.
(taking off the VR headset) Wow, this new Virtual Dreamality headset is almost like a real dream! What will they think of next? (As she sets down the headset) So who needs my help?
I agree…it does sound like another scheme of the King of Nightmares. (Sparks nods in agreement) Well, just stop using the fertilizer and remember that you do get what you pay for and that sometimes things for free, are worth even less than they cost!
This is official Dreamland business, so it’s an exception. Besides, I’ll be with the Dream Dragon and Sparks, I’ll be fine.
