Resident menace here, queer, and ready to wreak havoc. As a wiser woman than me once said, "Anything is possible if you sound White over the phone." Even so, I'm always happy to put away my generic Midwest office voice and slip into something a little more comfortable.

The Black backyards of Northern VA and Southeast DC roll off the tongue like an old friend. I've also got my family's Culpeper roots in the naps of my kitchen, and they taste homegrown too. It's a beautiful blend I code switch between like an operator directing the flow of traffic through my hospital's phone lines.

When I go to work, I wield my tongue like a scalpel, medical terminology used with surgical precision. I conduct the orchestra of a dozen specialties in perfect time, guiding patients to their appointments, with physicians kept in line. Of course, Spring will have its Rites, no matter what I do, but that just means I'll have to keep on trying. When the dance is done though, and I'm free?
