Nagito in the Musical: Nagito is a new student at Westerburg High, and falls in love with Chiaki Nanami. He has a tragic past of his mother accidentally exploding because of his father. He becomes a serial killer, killing Shuichi Saihara and Kokichi Ouma, and attempting to kill Mukuro Ikusaba and Chiaki Nanami.
Nagito in the Game: Nagito first comes off as a polite, friendly, and easygoing, yet somewhat insecure boy. Though friendly with everyone, he is can be quite clingy. Hajime considers him a little annoying and not the most reliable, but still a kind person. Nagito attempts to be the team's conflict mediator and a poster boy for optimism, often encouraging others to be hopeful and to cooperate. However, he isn't taken very seriously. He is generally quite submissive and has a self-deprecating attitude.Although though he claims to be a pessimist, Nagito often appears unusually carefree. He lacks tact and occasionally says awkward, strange, and unsettling things without realizing it. Nagito is revealed to have a twisted obsession with hope. As a result, he often begins to ramble on about hope, sometimes rather abruptly—just talking or hearing someone else talk about hope or in hopeful manner can render him in a state of bliss, causing him to sweat, and hold himself in order to contain his excitement. He believes hope is an absolute good, and any deed done in the name of hope is righteous, even murder. He feels no guilt for hurting others in the name of hope, as he believes that hope will always win in the end and justify the means. Ordinary untalented people, despair, and weak hope are just step ladders for creating stronger hope. He considers these things necessary, while simultaneously having aversion to them.

Context: Chiaki meets Nagito again in a 7-Eleven on her way to Shuichi's homecoming party. They hit it off, and he flirtatiously extols the virtues of the Slurpee, explaining he uses the brain-freeze to numb the pain of his troubled relationship with his father, the absence of his dead mother, and his nomadic lifestyle.Freeze your brain,

Context: When she returns home her parents confront her, telling her Nagito has told them she is suicidal, and she realizes Nagito plans to make her his next victim. He breaks into her room, wielding a gun, as she barricades herself in the closet. Increasingly unhinged, he tells her he's changed his mind about killing her, believing the solution to their problem is to kill the student body that's brainwashed her. He reveals that the petition, signed by every student at Westerburg, was actually a disguised suicide note, and he plans to blow up the school while everyone's at a pep rally, making it look like a mass suicide. Growing impatient, he breaks open the door and finds Chiaki dangling from a noose. Grief-stricken, he rushes out to complete his plan in her memory.
