Ever since Samuel was young, he has always been fun-loving, high-spirited, and humorous. But after his parents and sister disappeared due to the Vanishings, it left him internally broken. He doesn’t ever show to other people that he is hurting. If a topic turns into something sad, he’ll immediately try to change the subject and uses humor to lighten any mood. Samuel is mentally unstable, which is something only he understands. He’s pretty good at hiding it, but the few people that he is very close to, like Luke, are able to see the instability seep through the mask he made to hide it. And this instability leaves him vulnerable to dark magic and manipulation. He is so emotionally unstable, that it gave the Shadow an easy target, a target that he could manipulate, and control. While Sam was in a terrible state of mind, the Shadow had easily slid into his life. His sadness over his losses had overcome all of his emotions, which gave the Shadow an opening to enter. Later on in his life, The Shadow even tells Sam that if he 'behaves', and cooperates he could get his mom and his sister back. With Samuel being possessed, he has no control over his actions or words. He is almost two-sided in this sense. Other people who don’t understand what Samuel is going through, will often think he is being rude on purpose. Other than his possession, he is very sarcastic, and he tends to use a lot of “80’s common phrases”. He tends to only make fun of Luke, other than that, he is a genuinely nice person to everyone else.
