Sans (/sænz/, SANZ) is the older brother of Papyrus, and a major character in Undertale. He first appears in the forest outside Snowdin Town. He is either a supporting character or a heroic antagonist (depending on the player's actions).
Sans is shown to be very laidback, sleeping on the job as often as he takes breaks. He enjoys making bad, skeletons-related puns; although the fact that he performs at MTT Resort's restaurant hints that he may in fact be a talented comedian. He likes science fiction and loves to drink ketchup. This has led people to believe that he's 'bleeding' ketchup from his wounds at the end of his fight. In addition, he hates making promises.
He is kind and reassuring, but becomes eerily serious at particular moments. He is also very observant; his lines and actions change in relation to the player's choices more than any other character's.
Sans's laziness is shown to be in fact apathy and fatalism. He wonders if his indolence stems from his knowledge of the fact that any progress he makes will be erased abruptly as soon as the timeline resets, though he dismisses it as an excuse for being lazy.
Judging by the quantum physics book, workshop, and broken machine found in his house; among other evidence, Sans is heavily implied to come from a scientific background.
Of course he's cool. You would be too if you wore that outfit every day. He'd only take that thing off if he absolutely had to. Oh well, at least he washes it. And by that I mean he wear it in the shower.
Anyway, cool or not, Papyrus tries real hard. Like he keeps trying to be part of the royal guard. One day, he went to the house of the royal guard and begged her to let him in it. Of course, she shut the door on him becuase it was midnight. But the next day, she woke up and saw him still waiting there. Seeing his dedication, she decided to give him warrior training. It's, uh, still a working progress.
Oh yeah, I wanted to ask you something.
[lowers his tone and sounds more serious than usual]
Have you every heard of a talking flower? Yes? So you know all about it. The echo flower. They're all over the marsh. Say something to them and they'll repeat it over and over. What about it? Well, Papyrus told me something interesting the other day. Sometimes, when no one else it around, a flower appears and whispers things to him. Flattery..., Advice..., Encouragement..., ...Predictions. Weird, huh? Someone must be using an echo flower to play a trick on him. Keep an eye out, okay?
[very slowly and unnervingly]
Human. Don't you know how to greet a new pal? Turn around and shake my hand.
[Main character takes his extended hand and woopie cushion in the hand goes off. His voice shifts into a much more laid back and relatively friendly]
Heheh... The old woopie cushion in the hand trick. It's always funny. Anyways, you're a human, right? That's hilarious. I'm Sans. Sans the skeleton. I'm actually supposed to be on watch for humans right now. But... Y'know... I don't really care for capturing anybody.
