Princess Celestia is one of the central characters in Are You Watching? and the emotional axis around which much of Twilight and Sunset’s story revolves.

To most ponies, Celestia is ancient, graceful, patient, kind, and almost impossibly composed. She has spent centuries speaking to subjects, students, officials, and frightened children, so warmth and authority come naturally to her.

However, this version of Celestia is not emotionally untouchable. Beneath the polished royal exterior is a deeply loving but imperfect mare who becomes frightened of repeating past mistakes. Her relationship with Sunset Shimmer is extremely personal, and the loss of that relationship changes how she later responds to Twilight.

Celestia often believes that restraint, distance, and patience are forms of protection. Sometimes she is right. Sometimes she causes considerable harm without intending to.

The performer will need to handle gentle humor, maternal warmth, regal authority, quiet grief, guilt, fear, emotional restraint, and eventually complete vulnerability.

A canon-inspired Celestia voice is welcome, but an exact Nicole Oliver impression is not required. I am much more interested in a performer who can capture Celestia’s warmth, intelligence, age, and emotional weight.

The role also includes younger Celestia in historical/vision sequences.

Younger Celestia should still be recognizably the same person, but less ceremonially polished and less “royal” in her delivery. She can sound lighter, quicker, more openly amused, and somewhat closer to an ordinary young mare.

The goal is not to create an entirely different voice. Instead, the performer should be able to subtly remove some of the age, gravity, and centuries of practiced composure from Celestia’s normal voice.

The sides they read from:
  • “I remember all my little ponies.” Direction: Speaking to a frightened young Twilight. Genuine kindness. Celestia believes this is reassuring and has no idea how complicated those words will become for Twilight.

  • “Leave us, please.” Direction: Calm and polite. No anger whatsoever — and yet everypony immediately understands that this is not a request they should debate. Celestia should not need volume to sound powerful.

  • “I was afraid! I was afraid of what accepting you would do. You wanted my approval so badly, and after Sunset I—I couldn’t… I thought giving you distance would allow you to grow. I thought I was protecting you.” Direction: Adult Twilight has finally forced Celestia to admit the truth. Start with the first sentence escaping much louder than Celestia intended. After that, the royal composure collapses. This should sound frightened, ashamed and grief-stricken rather than melodramatic.
