SMALL, spread across the book. Maya's dad, a SEPTA bus mechanic and a big laugher who fills a kitchen. He likes Nathan. That matters, because the Bennett house is the safe warm place Nathan wants to belong to. SOUND: loud, easy, affectionate, relaxed. DIRECTION: not a gruff dad. He is the sound of a happy family, which is what makes the book hurt later. ACCENT: Northeast Philadelphia, stronger than the teenagers.

The sides they read from:

  • You call us. Anything. Middle of the night. You call.

  • There he is. Right on time. Does this kid ever sleep?
