Ashley is Lewis's mother, deceased before the series begins. We only ever see her in flashbacks. She was terminally ill from when Lewis was a child, and she raised him to be Champion—pushing him with a discipline that bordered on cruelty, all of it bound up with love she struggled to express any other way. She is the ghost in the machine of the entire show: every time Lewis is cold to a Pokémon, it is her voice he is echoing.
She is not a villain. She is a frightened, dying woman who tried to give her son something that would outlast her, and the thing she gave him broke him. The performance needs to hold both truths at once.
The Two RegistersCritical to this role: Ashley operates in two completely different vocal modes, often within the same scene, sometimes within the same line. Both must be available to the performer.
Register A — The TrainerSharp, exacting, impatient. The voice of someone who has zero tolerance for failure.
Can be cruel without raising volume—sometimes the quietest cuts are the deepest.
Used in training flashbacks. This is the voice that lives in Lewis's head and that we will hear in Trevor by extension.
Soft, warm, tired. The voice of someone who is dying and trying to hide it from her child.
Tender, sometimes adoring—“my precious boy” should land as genuine, not performative.
Used in hospital scenes and quieter memories. This is the voice Lewis is grieving.
The horror of Ashley is that both registers are real. She is not faking the love. She is not faking the cruelty. She believed she was preparing him. Find the through-line—a mother who weaponized her affection because she was running out of time. Avoid cartoon-villain coldness in Register A; avoid syrupy sweetness in Register B. The performance lives in the truth of both.

Side 1 — Hospital, Past (Register B) Setting: A hospital room. Young Lewis (10) bursts in, excited. Ashley turns slowly from the window. She is hooked up to medical equipment. She is dying, and she is hiding it. (somber, with a tinge of sadness) “Hello, my precious boy.” (brightening, but the brightness costs her) “You did? I'm so proud of you. You winning is the best medicine.” (quieter, almost to herself) “Keep going for me. Promise me you'll keep going.”
Side 2 — Training Flashback (Register A) Setting: A training field. Young Lewis is exhausted, his Pokémon struggling. Ashley watches from her wheelchair. She does not get up. She does not need to. (flat, dismissive) “Again.” (beat) “You hesitated. I saw you hesitate. You think a Champion hesitates?” (rising, sharpening — never quite a shout) “Pathetic! You'll never be champion battling like this! AGAIN!” (beat, then softening just slightly — the trap of her affection) “...I only push you because I know what you're capable of, Lewis. No one else will.”
Side 3 — The Last Conversation (Register A → B → A) Setting: Hospital, late stage. Lewis (16) sits at her bedside. She is going to die soon, and they both know it. This is the conversation that will haunt him. (weak, but the steel is still there) “Come closer. I don't have the breath to repeat myself.” (beat — she looks at him, really looks) “You are going to be Champion. Do you understand me? Not someday. Soon.” (softening — Register B bleeding through) “I won't be there to see it. But I need to know it before I go. I need to know you'll do it.” (taking his hand, almost tender) “Promise me, Lewis. Promise your mother.” (and then, the steel snapping back — quiet, exact) “Don't cry. Champions don't cry.”
