This character is the (brief) comic relief of the play. He guards the door of Macbeth's castle and is quite drunk from the revelry the night before. After his monologue where he jokes about being a porter at the gate of hell, he and Macduff share a comedic dialogue about the effects of alcohol shortly before Duncan's murder is discovered.
OLD MAN

The old man speaks with Ross about the strange and unnatural things that have been happening since Duncan's murder.
