Harold Kozlowski (Kawz-laow-skee) is a 33 year old Chicago physician of Polish descent, he is a practical man who has found himself in an unpractical situation. All his years of formal education and general practice has not prepared him for the horrors that await in Alexandria, IL.

The time period and history is written to the best of my abilities (1890). In a perfect world, I think it would be fitting to have the narrator's accent accurate to Chicago 19th century. However, I have not found much information on what the general accent sounded like during that time. Best I can ask for is a vintage Inland Northern accent if you catch my drift (Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland). As far as the voices for the other characters, I would assume they would have a slight southern drawl. Of course, do the best you can in what would sound best - I am new to the world of audiobooks.

  • “That’s right Mr. Kasky, you haven’t been here very long, have you?” said Mrs. Jameson as smoke spilled out her mouth. “It’s Doctor Kozlowski, but yes I’ve only been here ‘bout four months I believe.” She rolled her eyes. “Well, doctor, like many small towns, we all have our secrets.” She continued, “Ours just happens to be a devil woman in the woods.”

  • “The news broke after church, I’m sure other men are on their way.” My words hung thick in the air. There were only the three of us in a town where two children had gone missing on a Sunday. The reason was its own quiet, ugly arithmetic.

  • I am a physician. Fear is not foreign to me, but it has always, in my experience, had a sensible address. My instinct with unfamiliar things is to name them, and by naming them is to contain them. But this had no name.
