Macbeth could be seen as a tragic villain, at least in a few ways. While he is a brave soldier, a powerful noble, and (at the beginning of the play) seemingly loyal to king and country, Macbeth's ambition and self-doubt will be his downfall. The prophecies of the witches nudge him toward a path of unchecked ambition, betrayal, murder, tyranny, cruelty; and a growing madness and paranoia from the time of the murder through the rest of his life. Macbeth will see all of the witches' prophecies come true - both the good news and the deceptive warnings - and realize he has lost everything before he loses his life.
