Audio Production - The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare
Shae for Three Witches, the Weïrd Sisters
Voice: Female, Male, Androgynous
Ages: Young adult, adult, middle-aged, older
There are three witches that will be cast. By auditioning, you will be considered for all three.
The Weird Sisters are a group of mysterious figures that deliver prophecies and portents to Macbeth twice in the play. The first time they predict his rise to become king of Scotland, and the next time they offer him false hope of his success to keep the throne.
While their motives aren't clear, it is obvious that they delight in using their powers to bring misfortune on others. In Macbeth's case, they make statements that he assumes are assurances of his security; when in fact they are giving him cleverly worded warnings about his downfall.
The witches can be any gender, even though they are referred to as women and seen by the other characters in feminine forms.
The witches are mysterious, clever, mystical and dangerous. It is possible that they are evil spirits or creatures masquerading as humans, or they could be powerful humans who are exactly as they appear to others. Whatever they are, they are the ones who set Macbeth on his path to murder, betrayal, and madness.
