The psychiatrist isn't actually meant to make the patients feel less like monsters; on the contrary. The psychiatrist was hired by the government, to give the deformities a hard punch of reality; the world would never accept them the way they are. To try to convince them to just give up what they have. But they don't get it. The heros don't know how to give it up.
