The superhero protector of Gotham City, Bruce Wayne, billionaire industrialist and notorious playboy, is the son of Thomas Wayne, a candidate for Gotham’s mayor, and Martha Kane. On the night of a campaign event, Thomas insists on walking home with his family rather than taking a car. They cut through an alley where a mugger shoots and kills Thomas and Martha in front of young Bruce. Traumatized but comforted that night by Dr. Leslie Thompkins, Bruce grows up at Wayne Manor under the care of Alfred Pennyworth.

Vowing to rid Gotham of the evil that destroyed his family, Bruce devotes his life to mastering every skill needed to fight crime. From the age of 14, he travels the world, studying at elite universities and training under renowned experts: learning criminology, chemistry, forensics, martial arts, stealth, tracking, boxing, escape artistry, archery, and detective work.

By 20, Bruce realizes the FBI’s limitations and chooses a path outside the law. After a final harsh lesson when his last mentor is killed, he survives alone and returns home at 25, forged by years of global training into the ultimate detective and protector of Gotham—the Batman.

Bruce was among the founding members of the Justice League and helped defeat Darkseid's first invasion of Earth. The heroes, inspired by their victory, formed a team, christening it the Justice League, although Bruce only joined them officially some short time after their proper establishment.
