We’re an indie game studio looking for a voice actor to record a library of non-lexical vocalizations (grunts, sighs, short exclamations, breaths, chuckles - no full words) for NPC characters.

In addition to these non-verbal sounds, we also need specific combat lines that must be shouted clearly, as they represent combat reactions and may be heard from a distance in-game.

Game setting: Wild West

Role: Adult Male, age range 30-45

Emotions

For each category (e.g., Greetings, Approval, Excitement), please provide a total of 10-15 variations. These should include a mix of different intonations and intensities (softer, louder, more subtle, more expressive).

  • Greetings - brief acknowledging sounds when the NPC meets the player (e.g., polite hum, soft nod-grunt, light chuckle)

  • Farewells - closing/exit sounds (e.g., polite exhale, short “mm”)

  • Giving - handing an item, but nothing heavy. We don’t need hard sighs

  • Informing - non-verbal sounds indicating explanation or description (e.g., thoughtful “hmm”, confirming “mm-hm” style hum). For example, explaining something, describing an object, pointing at stuff, or counting to three.

  • Questioning - uncertainty/doubt (e.g., rising “huh?”, inquisitive hum)

  • Approval - positive acknowledgement (e.g., satisfied “mm”, small pleased exhale)

  • Disapproval - negative reaction (e.g., “tch”, disappointed exhale)

  • Excitement - big reaction to shocking news (e.g., sharp inhale, surprised “oh!”-like non-lexical)

  • Funny - reacting to something amusing (e.g., snort, short chuckle)

Tip for Applicants: When recording your samples, try to make some of your grunts and reactions 3-4 seconds long rather than just very short bursts. Think of the Sims talking and describing something - longer takes give more room for expression and character. Experiment with different intonations and dynamics, so the vocalizations feel like a natural, expressive sentence rather than a quick “hmmm.”

Combat Lines (shouted)
These lines represent intense combat situations and must be clearly shouted, as they can be heard from a distance:

  • “You bleed real pretty. Might hang your shirt as a trophy!”

  • “I’m already halfway in the grave... don’t mind draggin’ you down with me!”

  • “I’ll shoot your legs off just to watch you crawl!”

The final delivery should include 104 combat lines in total! (After casting)

All non-verbal sounds must remain non-verbal (except the combat lines) and clearly audible without distortion. Please ensure recordings are clean, with no background noise or room reverberation.

Requirements:

  • Clean audio from a home studio or better

  • Sample rate: 44.100 kHz, bit rate 16, mono

  • Ability to deliver variation across multiple takes and intensities

  • Format: WAV, no processing (no EQ, compression, or limiting)

Language:
  • english
