Class Session 4
Variah for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
Great read Variah! strong execution for the scene you set up. Great relaxed tone of voice perfect for just hanging out with the gang. Good use of some minor improv to sell the scene as well as giving the improv enough space to be able to get cut out if requested.
What I'd love to lean into a little more is this idea you bring up that as the night has gone on, the friends have been drinking, and that inebriation is part of the reason the story is so wacky. Currently, your read comes off as very casual, very familiar, but the hints of exaggeration or hyperbole are missing, I'm not really hearing someone who's purposefully telling a silly story but someone who's telling a regular story. Especially if this is something their making up on the spot, we'd want some sense of the character themselves discovering the story as they tell it.
In other words, your character sounds too confident and put together for telling a make believe story a few drinks into a silly night with a bunch of friends. Let's fall apart a little bit! Give into a giggle here and there as you make up some of the wacky nonsense, give a pause as you try to come up with something on the spot! Purposeful uncertainty can make a character feel much more spontaneous and in the moment and help steer away from the sound of someone reading from a script.
Awesome work Variah, a fun read and solid context for the script! Liked it a lot!
