Class Session 4
Jo Everest for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
A nice read here Jo! Good work slowing down for the script and taking your time through the tongue twisting lines. This is definitely a more challenging script with all the w and r sounds to parse through again and again.
I like your choice of audience as well. The silly little story works great as a children's book and you can use that setting to emphasize and exaggerate the delivery. That said, in considering your target audience, the read was a touch monotonous. With reading to children you can really punch up the drama and excitement to keep and hold their attention, particularly adding drama to the events of the story to make them seem larger and more impactful. Were we to take this again, I'd have us focus in more on making the read sound like a read aloud. Let's determine the age of these kids as well, as we wouldn't read the same to a group of 5th graders as we would a group of pre-school kids! The age group would determine things that we would emphasize to the kids.
The older kids we wouldn't necessarily have to slow down very much and we would read about the same pace as you did, but put more stress on the events as they unfold. Try to teach the kids things like cause and effect, e.g. why did Robin get hurt trying to run the race? Did Robin complete the Race Correctly? We want to imagine the purpose of reading the kids this story and let that drive our read.
For younger children, we would want to slow the read down to be very slow. Let the the kids keep up with the wacky alliterations and read only one or two sentences at a time before pausing and "showing" the kids the page. You would typically stop every page and let the kids look at the illustrations and the words, do thing like "can you see where Robin is? That's right! There she is!" Not that you have to add in that kind of adlib to the read or stop every time but it would be a great detail to throw in to show how your reading to a young audience of kids.
Overall this was a great start to the script, wonderful work Jo! Keep it up cause you know I'm excited for more!
Thank you, oh my goodness this was very helpful! Admittedly, I've never read to kids before, so I was kind of winging it there! But you've equipped me with great tips that I can use in the future, and considering the age group was something that completely went over my head, I'll be sure to be more specific next time as well!! Thank you!
