Paid: Hourly 40 USD
cast offsite

As the Creative Director, you are the creative heart of our productions. You will be the guiding force ensuring the artistic integrity and emotional resonance of each dramatized audiobook, from script to final sound. You will be responsible for interpreting the story, guiding our actors to deliver breathtaking performances, and shaping the overall sonic landscape. This senior role requires a strong artistic vision, hands-on technical skill, and the ability to lead a creative team.

Pay Clarification: Our current pay structure is based off of word count. Therefore, the hourly rate is an estimation of work load per hour and not an official figure. As word counts can change depending on title, we are unable to apply a flat rate either. Thank you for your understanding.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review adapted scripts from our Producer/Adapter, providing final creative analysis and establishing a clear directorial vision for the tone, pacing, and character arcs.

  • Lead the entire casting process, from developing detailed character briefs to identifying and selecting the perfect voice talent to bring our stories to life.

  • Direct voice actors during live remote recording sessions to elicit powerful, nuanced performances. You will also review, select, and guide takes from self-directed actor submissions.

  • Meticulously edit all selected dialogue takes into a seamless and emotionally impactful timeline within a DAW, creating the foundational voice track to be provided to the Sound Designer.

  • Oversee the final creative stage by selecting and applying the musical soundtrack, choosing pieces that enhance scenic atmospheres, underscore emotion, and complete the immersive experience.

  • Serve as the ultimate guardian of the project's creative quality, collaborating closely with the script adapter, sound designer, and actors to ensure a cohesive and compelling final product.

Requirements & Skills

  • Extensive, proven experience as a Director in audio drama, theatre, animation, or a related narrative field, supported by a strong portfolio of work.

  • Demonstrated expertise in directing actors (especially voice actors), with an exceptional ability to communicate creative concepts and inspire powerful performances.

  • Hands-on proficiency in dialogue editing using a professional Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), such as Audacity, Pro Tools, Reaper, Adobe Audition, etc.

  • A sharp ear for casting, a deep understanding of character development, and an instinct for storytelling and pacing in an audio-only format.

  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and collaborative skills.

  • Not a requirement, but as we are an audiobook company, an interest in fiction books would be well looked upon.

  • Comfort with potentially working on "Romantasy" or spicy romance titles is an optional requirement as we are looking to potentially pick up such titles.

Important Note on Scheduling

This is a fully remote role. However, please note that Kokoro Audio is based in Sydney, Australia (AEST). The successful candidate must have the flexibility to attend virtual meetings and conduct recording sessions, which may require working during early mornings or late evenings, depending on your and the actors' time zones.

When applying, please attach examples or portfolios of projects you have worked on previously.
