Class Session 3
Samantha Binkley for Role
Full details of homework is on Closing Credits
Ah Samantha, great read but still you're so quiet! Is it a matter of living circumstance that you record at such a low volume? For most of the read your at what I would call a whisper shout. Like your trying to tell a dramatic story to a friend in the library and are afraid of getting told off by the librarian. You did a great job with the script and I like the performance. I would love to hear you explore more and hear more of your acting and voice! If you can, take some time before recording next weeks homework and pretend your in dragon ball z. Just Stand and super sayan power up scream for a minute! Let some air fill your lungs and get blasted out with enough force to crack Namek!
Great job on the pronunciation of names here, great clarity as well on your read through all these alliterations, though there was the single stumble on "celebrates victory" That I would have stopped and gone back up the script to take the sentence again.
You really get into the swing of your character's attitude on the back end of the script. The discovery and fun of Faucher looking at a girl and getting hit in the face is super fun and well done. Comparatively we had sort of a flatter beginning of the script where we had a pattern of delivery for the first chunk of the script.
For these energized reads, even though we perform the lines quickly, we don't have to take our breaths too quickly. Some breaths in the read here felt rushed and you can almost hear you gasping for air. Stylistically it worked for some of the script, but just be careful you don't take big gasping breaths all the time when reading quickly. There's nothing wrong with stopping, taking a nice long breath, then continuing with a rapid read! That kind of break can very easily be cut out in post whereas big gasping breaths are quite hard to cut out when they run directly into the script.
Great work here Samantha! Go ahead and show us some power coming into week 4! Don't be afraid of letting your housemates know you're gonna be loud for a recording session! If you continue along your VO journey, there's going to be times where you'll be screaming and crying in your recording space. So let's start practicing that volume in the class!
Thank you for the feedback! I didn't think it sounded that quiet but it may be because my volume is up higher. Honestly, I was too excited to audition for things and didn't really finish learning Reaper so I think that's probably a lot of my issues. I'm probably setting things way too low when I normalize my recordings. I'll definitely have to keep that in mind and finish up learning how to use it.
